Well, now, the discussion over Nick Farrell's blog article about the Golden Dawn oath of secrecy has gotten some interesting traction as of late. As an outsider, it mostly doesn't concern me, since I have not taken any of the Golden Dawn oaths. I am not a party to that discussion, just an outsider who is puzzling over it because it seems so simple to me.
I have already responded to this argument that pagans and witches take their oaths pretty seriously in a previous article, even if it is to protect confidences and materials (like the Book of Shadows) that everyone pretty much knows anyway.
Some like Fr. Peregrin have opined that secrecy and oaths are archaic and could even be considered idolatrous, since they mistake the symbols and tools for the real mysteries. You can find his blog here. I am sorry, but I find that argument kind of confusing and a bit off topic. The real issue here is whether or not oaths and secrecy have any relevance. Of course, I can talk about this from a theoretical perspective, but I can't freely violate the oaths that I took when I was initiated as a witch - it just isn't done. Why is that so? Well, for one thing it would undo my initiatory process, invalidating what I received and what I appear to continue to receive. Who wants to screw around with progress? Peregrin makes a really good point that the mysteries are inexplicable and can't be written down or shared with others, and I wholly agree.
This is one of the reasons why witches and many pagan are not "people of the book." We have no sacred scriptures because the mysteries themselves provide those experiential mysteries in great abundance. What is secret is what I do in my personal magick (at least the more subjective and personal stuff, in case I feel the need to share or teach others), the personal names of the various Gods and Goddesses that I have experienced or received, the ritual lore that I use, and most importantly, the name of my Holy Guardian Angel. Does this mean that I am some kind of idolater? Well no, it really doesn't. I am an idolater because I'm a pagan and use statues of the gods in my magickal work, and I give them offerings and worship them, but that's another issue altogether.
Then there is the sticky issue of the secret chiefs, also known as those "remarkable men and women" who have achieved the highest level of being possible for a human. Do I believe that they are mythic and they don't really exist? Of course not. I don't believe in omniscient and immortal humans who live for centuries without aging and who have superhuman powers, but I do believe that a single human being can achieve complete and total enlightenment in a single life time. That's different than believing in "ascended masters," but I won't argue or try to prove that such individuals don't exist to those who believe in them. I just don't share their beliefs, that's all.
Could it be possible that there is a Third Order of higher adepts in the Western Mystery tradition who reside in some location of the world, most likely Europe? Why not? Some have said that there couldn't possibly be such a group or even individuals. They even say that those who claim to have made contact with such a group and have materials for the Third Order are lying and being totally deceitful. How could that be? If someone claims that no such group or organization exists, then they should be required to prove that statement, just as those who claim that it is true.
However, due to oaths of secrecy and confidentially, providing proof that such a group exists might actually be impossible, if one actually obeys those oaths. This is definitely a Catch-22 situation. It's like the argument about the existence of God - some will propose proof that God exists, but that proof can be just as easily turned around and shown to be negative. In the end, the only proof is a person's good works and faith in God. The existence of God is determined by the fact that many believe in God, and they are powerfully and positively transformed by it. It can't be proven, but then again, it can't be disproved, either. The same paradox exists for the secret chiefs. If you have met them and know they exist, then you have been made to take oaths not to reveal their identities, which is part of the issue of keeping confidences (and a real conundrum).
What this means is that if one faction of the GD claims to have contact with the secret chiefs and has constituted the Third Order, then the only way to prove that claim one way or the other must require a person to undergo those initiations and teachings and find out for themselves. Otherwise, the arguments are all pointless. The proof of the pudding is in the eating - if you don't eat the pudding, then you can't know. It's very simple logic, even for an outsider.
Finally, to claim that there are no secret chiefs or any kind of advanced adepts in the world, or at least in the Western Mystery tradition, is to say that the only valid knowledge in the world is what is in books in a library or available on the internet. If it isn't in those various sources, then it doesn't exist.
Think about that for a moment. It sets up a terrible boundary or limitation on spiritual, magickal and esoteric knowledge. It says, in effect, that there is nothing greater out there than what we have already achieved. Everyone, no matter their personal gifts and abilities or how long they have studied, not to mention the breakthroughs that they might have made, are at the same level. Initiations, transformations, secret oaths - it's all just window dressing! Well, I for one would find that quite discouraging. It means that we are totally alone and there are no brothers or sisters out there who know more than we do, at least in any significant way.
Gee, if I were to believe that, then I may as well quit all of this mumble jumble occultism now while I am ahead and do something really constructive with my life, like making lots of money or discovering my happiness in the sandy beaches of Tahiti. Good thing for me that I still have hope that I will someday meet some remarkable men and women who might teach me something that I don't already know. I eagerly look forward to that day.
If someone claims to have contacts with the secret chiefs or remarkable men and women and that they have established a Third Order of higher adepts, who am I to deny them? If I want to prove them wrong, then I would need to be initiated into that organization. Otherwise, I can just nod my head and give them the benefit of the doubt, because who knows, what if that claim is legitimate? Who wants to spoil any future opportunities to achieve total enlightenment? I, for one, don't, so I will play by the rules and see what happens. That's the most that any of us can really do. To do otherwise is to spoil the game for ourselves and for others as well.

There is a good deal of energy available to use as fuel, if we accept our whole selves, strip away false doubts and limiting beliefs imposed from outside to reveal truth and use wisdom instead of whim to guide our paths. Thus, Scorpio is the sign of transformation, generation and sex or fertility.
Use journaling, meditation and set your intention for change and growth. Sure, you can do this at any time, but it's even better when you can align with the moon and the rhythms of the universe.
Just a few days after New Moon, Samhain and the Celtic New Year arrive. This is the time when tradition teaches us that the veils are thin and our ancestors and other spirits come close. This bodes well for tremendously deep delvings in divination or meditative work, as well as an opportunity to let go of old patterns and create new ones.

with Lee Mims We are delighted to welcome debut mystery author Lee Mims to Omnimystery News today.Lee introduces geologist and amateur sleuth Cleo Cooper in Hiding Gladys (Midnight Ink, January 2013 trade paperback and ebook formats).We recently had a chance to chat with Lee about her new book. -- -- Omnimystery News: Why did you choose to write a mystery with a recurring character?Photo provided courtesy ofLee Mims Lee Mims: As a writer of a mystery series, it is my intention to develop my main character, Cleo Cooper, over the course of three books. Therefore, the need for flaws. After all, each of us has flaws; there are no perfect people. With that in mind, Cleo's tendency to risk everything -- both financially and sometimes with her very life -- in the hope of a high return is perhaps the flaw I most often use to get her into situations that test her resolve. For instance, who could walk by a well and not gaze down into it? And, provided there's a rope reaching down into the water below, who could resist pulling on it to see if it's attached to a bucket? What if you couldn't reach the rope? Do you have enough dare devil in you to lean out just a little further? I do but then I'm rather like Cleo myself and end up learning life's lessons the hard way. We do something stupid, we learn and grow. I know I did and so will Cleo. Cleo's constant desire to do everything herself, to ask for help from no one is another character trait that could be considered by some as a flaw. While it might be understandable, given the fact that she was married at the tender age of 20 to a somewhat older, very wealthy man with an inclination to overprotect, it's still the catalyst I use to place her in challenging predicaments. It may be that over time, she'll look back on having someone to lean on as being not so bad. Or, maybe she'll evolve further into a loner, a woman who having finally attained the self-respect she craved by standing on her own, cherishes it all the more. Only time and two more books will tell.OMN: Would you characterize this mystery as a cozy?LM: I think of my books as medium-boiled mystery/thrillers. At the beginning of each one a body shows up. How the victim died and who killed them lingers, hopefully as a tantalizing question until the end. I add "thriller" to my categorization because I love action with a dash of the fear factor thrown in for good measure.I'm not a marketing expert, just a writer, really, but I think for my Cleo Cooper series, marketing to fans of mysteries and thrillers is definitely an advantage. These readers are a devoted group and if I am lucky enough to gain their approval, I feel I can count on them to keep me on my toes with all the details that must go into writing a mystery that really works. OMN: Did you incorporate any of your own personality or experience into Cleo Cooper?LM: Of the three books, Hiding Gladys, will probably be the one with the most personal experience backing it up as I actually worked in the field doing much of what Cleo does. I have a Masters in Sedimentary Petrology. That is, I have the underpinnings of a petroleum geologist but since I never worked in that field, I wouldn't call myself one. So, my second book, Trusting Viktor, relies heavily on research. Moreover, the world of oil exploration is entirely closed to anyone not in the industry. This is so not only because of the proprietary nature of the knowledge they acquire at huge expense, but because they are so often maligned by the press. Having said all that, the internet has made knowledge in any area of interest under the sun accessible with the click of a mouse. I spent literally months on the computer researching the technical information I needed for Trusting Viktor and this, coupled this with actual trips to the Gulf to interview people in the industry, gave me enough knowledge to, hopefully, make my readers feel they're actually aboard a drillship. I don't know about you, but the books I enjoy the most are those in which you can experience another place as though you were really there. James Hall's Thorn novels come to mind. When you read them, you are transported through his prose to seedy backwater bars with a gritty floors deep in the Mangroves of central Florida or to lonely stretches of beach with sunsets that take your breath away. Mr. Hall is able to do this not only because he is a master writer, but also because lives in and obviously loves Florida. Similarly, I want my readers to experience eastern North Carolina from country roads cutting through farmland to maritime forests and backwater marshes to the beaches and even to some of my favorite restaurants. Since these are the places of my heart, the places where I lived and played for most of my life, I hope my books will accomplish this. OMN: Tell us about your writing process.LM: Long before I was a writer, I was an artist. I've painted literally hundreds of paintings over many decades and I can tell you this for sure: the creative process for writing and painting is very similar. Both start with a sketch and with an overall mood or atmosphere in mind. And, for me, both writing and painting are done in layers. My writing sketch consists of a very rough synopsis which I never hold myself to, which is a good thing, because as the story progresses, invariably I find a better way to go to make the story stronger. Often -- and this is the most amazing part of writing for me -- as I write, the story goes off its own and even I am surprised. There is nothing like the feeling you get when you're laboring along at your computer, thinking you know where you're headed and then: boom! A thought flies into your head that changes the whole tale for the better.I liken the layering technique I use with my oil painting layers to layering in my writing in the following way: I start with an primer color and a rough in. At this point you absolutely have to let the paint dry before you add a new layer. In this way, you can leave some areas untouched and add to others to get the feeling of depth and inner glow all artists strive to achieve. Similarly, my novels begin with an initial rough draft. Then, like letting the paint dry, I let my books "cool off" before my first rewrite. This cooling off period needs to be at least a few weeks. Then the hacking begins. Following another few weeks away from the book, I rewrite again, this time tightening and adding more color and detail. I do this as many times as my deadlines permit before I send it to my editor who refers to herself as my hired gun because at that point, each sentence in the story is getting to be an old friend and killing them off is not something I don't do well. When all the revisions are done, the story, like one of my studio paintings is the result of may layers of thought.OMN: If a studio adapting your book was casting for the role of Cleo Coyle, who would be your first choice to play the part?LM: I definitely write my story with a mental image of Cleo that I arrived at by writing from the perspective of my own physical attributes such as height, weight, strength, etc. So, if by some miracle of a semi-religious nature, a major motion-picture studio wanted to turn my series into a movie, I can't think of a better actress to play the part than Cameron Diaz. She, like me is 5'9", has an athletic build and blond hair, and in some of her movies, appears to be quite strong. Important note: I don't look like Cameron Diaz. Oh, the pity! Anyway, she's the almost the right age, too. She's 41 and Cleo is a indefinite age somewhere past mid-forties. I never say for sure because that adds to her mystique. -- -- Lee Mims is and always has been a North Carolina farm girl. She played outdoors from dawn to dusk, built forts, drank water from garden hoses and ran with sticks. "From Irene Block:" The location of this case is being kept secret and the names of the people involved have been changed to protect identity.
Although there is a tragic story to this house, at the moment we can not rule out that is the cause of the problem. Because of this, we are investigating the surrounding area and its history.
The house was built in the 1950s on land that would have been rural. I know that in the years following WW2 there was an upsurge in house building in the area surrounding the city of London in order to house refugees from the East End of London that was devastated from continuous bombing. For many years after the war, families were still living in prefabricated homes waiting to be rehoused in the suburban areas. This may or may not have been the case here.
The family involved moved in September 2009, consisting of a young mother, father and baby son 21 months old. This family has already spent considerable time renovating the house to modern standards of today. This could have been the cause for the activity recently but, at this point, I am going to say NO.

"From Irene Block:" The activity in the house continues. Shadows have been seen moving across the landing at the top of the stairs, noises such as dragging and scraping similar to a chair being pulled across floorboards have been heard.
The couple have heard feedback through the baby monitor of a woman talking even when the monitor has been turned off. A woman has been heard laughing in the house by both father and mother at separate times, usually when one or the other is in the house alone. The disembodied voice of a woman talking somewhere in the house is heard, always it is difficult to work out what is being said.
Movement is often seen from the corner of the eye and smells of perfume or at times a musty smell appears and is quickly gone. There is a constant feeling of being watched.
Audible knocking on the stairs can be heard often accompanied by drastic temperature drops.
The child's toys seem to have a life of their own, switching on for no particular reason...the batteries have all now been removed.
On one occasion the father woke early one morning at 5.30am to see a white light near the bed. Instantly he became pinned down and unable to move, which for anyone can be terrifying. (This could of course be night terrors but at the moment we have not had the chance to talk to him of his experience).
Yesterday during the day while the mother was in the master bedroom she witnessed a dark shadow move along the wall behind the babies cot. Thinking it may have been her that cast the shadow she shifted her body in different directions but her form did not throw out any shadow. (The baby is sleeping in the parents room while his bedroom is being decorated)
The night before, as the father was watching television, he witnessed what he described as a white ball shape move (orb) from one side of the room across and disappear on the other side, This orb must have been bright as he saw it with the naked eye.
When asked if there had been any changes in the mood swings in the family the mother told me she was feeling more tired, low and unhappy. The father was showing signs of being more stressed and at times touchy. Seems to me that this is beginning to take a toll on them.
From what I can gather the majority of the activity is centred on the staircase, landing and master bedroom.
There is a sad and tragic story attached to this house that will be told at a later date.
Obviously the happenings in this house are very worrying for this young family. They feel as if the house is not their own and cannot understand fully why it is happening to them. They just want it gone so they can get on with their lives. Two of the SRI team will visit the house this coming Wednesday to attempt to get pictures, EVPs, etc. as we want to get control of this before the activity escalates.

The on-site investigation has ended...looks to have been very successful. First off, much of what was perceived in yesterday's RV session was confirmed by the investigators Jamie and Barry. None of the information obtained through the RV was given to the investigators. Jamie, who is a sensitive, immediately reacted with head and back pain when entering the house. This is a response he receives when spiritual energy is present.
Jamie detected 3 spirits within the house...2 benevolent (female and male) and another which was questionable (dominant male). This was also recognized during the remote view. Barry felt something 'blowing' on his neck...no drafts or open window were present. As well, there was considerable temperature variation (especially experienced by the client). There were also discernible 'knocking' sounds heard by all present.
A portal may have been located (the main bedroom corner which was perceived during the RV). Jamie had the client stand near the portal...electrical / static sensations were confirmed the client.
The physical description of the female spirit while alive was made during the RV and confirmed by the client who had seen a photograph previously.
Photographs, video and audio evidence were collected and will be examined later this week. Stay tuned...Lon

"From Irene Block:" The child a 21 month old toddler. I believe I said previously that he was a different child out of the house to being in it, Outside he is a happy giggling little boy but as soon as he comes home his mood changes.
He shows signs of fear of being in the master bedroom and although normally he is a good sleeper he is now waking upset several times a night.
On more then one occasion he has been seen staring at the walls crying out 'NO NO NO' as if something threatening was frightening him. This happens often and always at the end the child says 'Gone Now, Gone Now' and then calms down.
Lately, this little boy seems to go down with one infection after the other, This would be understandable if the child was at school or continuously mixing with other children, but this is not the case.
Beside something being in the house that seems to taunt the child there is also something else that he is comforted by. Again as if seeing something not visible to anyone else the child will chat away in his gibberish way and will repeat the words 'Good Boy, Good Boy' as if mimicking words being said to him.
Just the other day the child was sitting quite happily having a conversation with this invisible friend, when he was asked who he was talking to, he replied with the name Ian.
Our research had already turned up a previous owner of the house by the name 'Ian' and this name was also confirmed to the family by a neighbour.
Ian had died back in the 80s.

OK folks...the evidence is starting to trickle in. The master bedroom seems to be the main area of activity and possibly contains a portal. Jamie and Barry left a recorder in the master bedroom....I was able to listen to the first part of the recording and found the following sounds and one discernible EVP.
Master bedroom 1 - this was a recording of over 20 minutes condensed down to the parts where sounds and the EVP (3:34) were heard. Note the heavy footsteps / banging throughout the room. I have felt that the attic area above this bedroom is active as well....it seems that some of the sounds are emanating from the attic.
Master bedroom - EVP - this is the EVP isolated from the longer clip. Irene and I believe there are 3 spirits / entities in this house. The identities, perceived through the RV, are believed to be a father (died in 1986) and daughter (died in 1993) as well as another entity that is a male who is most likely causing the problems and disturbing activity. We will go further into this scenario and the history of this location after we examine and present the evidence...Lon

Well, we got him! This photograph was the first taken on the evening of the on-site investigation...one day after the remote view of the location. The RV target was the last day of the daughter's life (in 1993). What I can currently say is that I felt what the daughter felt and witnessed before and after she died. This photo captures the exact same entity that I saw and described to Irene during the RV. The apparition was standing in the doorway of the master bedroom observing Jamie while the photograph was taken...the reflection of the entity was captured from the window. Jamie was the only person in the room.
I gathered enough information about this being during the RV to realize that it is most likely an earthbound spirit that latches on to the living and the dead. Frankly, I was stunned when Irene pointed the photo out to me....I recognized it immediately and told her so. Nonetheless, Irene is happy that she's dealing with an earthbound...Lon
