The End Of Evangelicalism Or The Failure Of Anabaptism To Take Over Evangelicalism Part Ii

The End Of Evangelicalism Or The Failure Of Anabaptism To Take Over Evangelicalism Part Ii
Is isolationism and withdrawal better? Do the Amish have it right?

I ask because Fitch puts forward a neo-anabaptist alternative to conservative politics as the better way for Evangelicals in chapter 6.

Sometimes Catholics say that Evangelicals have no ecclesiology and by that they mean that Evangelicals do not believe that God's grace is mediated to the world via the institutional church centered in a sacramental priesthood and ruled by a hierarchy. Fitch's neo-anabaptism amounts to a protestant version of the Catholic concept of the Church as the extension of Christ's incarnation. He writes:

"The church, then, becomes an extension of the Trinity into the world as a participant in this sending, the missio Dei. By articulating the evangelical belief in Scripture in the terms set forth above - our one true story of God for the whole world, infallible in and through Jesus Christ our Lord - we in essence have the basis for becoming the church Bosch speaks about.... The politic of the church is shaped by Scripture as the very real incarnational presence of Christ extended by the Spirit into the world - a politic of fulness in the world. (p. 141)In this chapter (chapter 6) Fitch argues for replacing an inerrant Bible with a divine Church. It is not a hierarchical church that he envisions and it has the priesthood of all believers instead of a sacramental priesthood. But it is a view of the Church as the mode of Christ's presence in the world. (Maybe his language is just loose here - maybe he does not really mean that the Church is a continuation of the incarnation. That is the impression I got from one quick read and it could be wrong. I'll argue against the idea anyway though because the idea is wrong no matter who proposes it in whatever context.)

Evangelicalism must resist this theological proposal because the role of the Church is not to be an extension of the incarnation or the presence of God in mission in the world. The role of the Church is to be a witness to the coming kingdom by preaching salvation through the King - Jesus Christ. The Church points away from itself to something greater and better. The mission of the Church is to bear the message of the Gospel to a world in need of the good news of salvation. If we were to accept (what I think I understand to be) Fitch's proposal we would be abandoning the valid insights of the Reformers of the 16th century. This presumably would not bother Fitch as a neo-anabaptist, but it ought bother Evangelicals who wish to keep faith with their heritage of Biblical doctrine.

Next, Fitch recommends N. T. Wright's challenge to the Reformation doctrine of justification as the way to avoid cheap grace. He writes:

"Wright's reformulation in essence makes justification impossible for the believer apart from his/her wider participation in the work of God in Christ by the Spirit to set the world right. I cannot possess this salvation as my own. I am justified only as I am a participant 'in Christ,' in the righteousness God is working in the world. There can be no distancing of myself from Christ in accepting God's pardon from sin made possible in Christ.... We enter into salvation by entering into the entire work of God in Christ by the Spirit for the mission of God in the world." (p. 144)I find it difficult to believe that anyone could believe that Evangelical theology has never heard of the clear teaching in the book of James. We know that justification by faith is true, but we also know that true saving faith results in good works being done by the person who is truly regenerated by the Spirit of God. So what is Fitch driving at here with his call to move away from the Reformation doctrine of forensic justification?

It seems that he is again moving in a Catholic direction and embracing synergism instead of monergism thus turning salvation into a joint effort in which God and man cooperate. Maybe he does not mean this. But why advocate a New Perspective view on justification instead of using the many resources within Evangelical theology that can be deployed to fight anti-nomianism? It is not like this is a new problem. Monergism is fully capable of resisting anti-nomianism and has done so for five centuries. This is why Evangelicalism needs the Gospel Coalition and more good, sound, biblical teaching. But it is not like we had no reply to anti-nomianism until the New Perspective came along.

In the third section of chapter six, Fitch makes his Catholic theological direction clearer. Here he makes use of the Catholic theologians De Lubac and Cavanaugh to argue for a doctrine of the visible Church as the body of Christ. He writes:

"A politic is thus born. Christ's reign becomes visible as we embody the infinite gifting of forgiveness, faithfulness, and love. Yet this way of being together births the Kingdom not only among 'us.' It enables us to resist alternatives politics of violence and isolation, to subvert them, and indeed to draw the world into the restoration of all things, i.e. the Kingdom of God." (p. 157)Here we see an over-realized eschatology in which the Kingdom is here in the corporate life of the church and is visible for all to see. It is Roman Catholic ecclesiology radicalized. I remember David Burrell saying once that if he was not going to continue to be a Catholic he would become a Mennonite, which makes a lot of sense. In place of the sacramental priesthood mediating God's grace to humankind we have the "community of character" (Hauerwas), the incipient kingdom of God made visible in the quality of moral relationships between members of the church.

What direction is Fitch pushing Evangelicalism? It is obvious to me, having read this book, why he has such a strong animus toward Reformed theology. It embodies everything he finds distasteful: justification by faith alone, expository preaching, mission as evangelism, and personal repentance and faith as the lynch pin of salvation. He has clearly detached himself emotionally from Evangelicalism as a tradition and from the theology that undergirds it in both its Reformed and Arminian branches.

He wants a liberal form of Roman Catholicism: the church as divine presence in the world, salvation as synergism, and mission as moral action in and by the faith community.

Fitch never considers the possibility that Evangelicals might have a political theology in which the mission of the church is evangelizing the lost and nurturing its members, while individual church members might be responsible to engage in politics in a fallen world as part of their own Christian discipleship rather than as part of the church's mission per se. Christians are pilgrims in this world; our true home is heaven. But while we are here we should be good neighbors and good citizens, recognize signs of common grace when we see them and co-operate with all those of good will in making the world a little less violent, a little less unjust and a little less disrespectful of human life, family and the weak among us. (It might even mean voting for a Mormon as president!)

Such a politics has no grandiose goals of turning a fallen world into the kingdom of God; that is the work of Jesus and he has promised to complete it when he returns. Such a politics has no grandiose visions of the mission of the Church; she exists to preach the Gospel, bear a witness to Jesus, enfold the lost, comfort the dying and build up the body of Christ. The Church is not here to make America into the kingdom of God. On this point, Fitch is right to criticize Evangelical rhetoric because the goal is not a Christian nation in the sense of a nation that is transformed into a church. But, you know, I have actually met one or two Evangelicals who understand this and who would insist that the rhetoric of civil religion not be over-interpreted. A Christian nation can be understood as a nation that (1) does not persecute the church, (2) upholds natural law as the basis of positive law and (3) protects the religious freedom of all religions.

Christian Smith, the Notre Dame sociologist who has studied the Religious Right in depth, came to the conclusion that the real goals of the Religious Right was to get America back to the situation of the 1950s (with the exception of the civil rights gains made since). Now that may not be a very ambitious goal because the 1950s were far from perfect. But that is exactly my point; conservative politics does not aim for perfection. The Christian Right doesn't ask for much. Stop killing babies, teach abstinence to school children, respect the flag, don't impose socialism on the nation. Only in the fevered imaginations of over-wrought leftists (who I suspect are not sincere), does this add up to theocracy. If you want to see a real theocracy don't look at 1950s America, look at post 1979 Iran. Check out Saudi Arabia. Feminists who call Jerry Falwell a theocrat should have to go live in Iran or Saudi Arabia for a while. Did you know that women in 1950s America were allowed to drive cars? Really. And did you know that there is no record of any adulteresses being stoned to death in America in the 1950s? Seriously. Maybe the America of the 1950s might not look like the Gulag after the experience of living in a real theocracy.

Politics is not the mission of the church and it is of secondary importance. Preaching the Gospel is the mission of the Church and it is of ultimate importance. Turning the preaching of the Gospel into a form of politics is to demean it. On this fundamental point Fitch and Evangelicalism will remain at odds.

For neo-anabaptism, the goal is to evolve beyond the Reformation, but the historic mission of Evangelicalism in the West is to revive the church when it falls into dead orthodoxy. The Trinitarian and Christological dogmas of the first five centuries and the solas of the Reformation are not the problem. Evangelicalism presupposes them. Evangelicalism is not doctrinally innovative at its best; its real contribution to the church catholic is to call it back to the truth and power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Politics is a matter for Christians who must live in the world while we await a Saviour from heaven. Politics is a matter of prudence, discernment and compromise. It is always messy and often dirty. It is part of living in a fallen world. But politics is not the Gospel. The Gospel is Christ crucified to save sinners.

The Inspirational Power Of Dreams
I don't hold sink of us who stall in the modern world bounty understand the the power of take care in the pre-scientific ancient world. Religion Belief Christian And Voodou Tensions Heightened In Haiti

Religion Belief Christian And Voodou Tensions Heightened In Haiti
For Christians still reflecting on the earthquake tragedy that struck Haiti two recent and troubling aspects of a news story need to be carefully reflected upon in terms of our attitudes and actions toward those of other religions, particularly those that make Christians uncomfortable.

The Associated Press reports that a group of Evangelical Christians attacked a group of voodou practitioners.

"Voodooists gathered in Cite Soleil where thousands of quake survivors live in tents and depend on food aid. Praying and singing, the group was trying to conjure spirits to guide lost souls when a crowd of Evangelicals started shouting. Some threw rocks while others urinated on Voodoo symbols. When police left, the crowd destroyed the altars and Voodoo offerings of food and rum."Some of this violence might be understood in relation to the escalating tensions that are running high, including religious ones, as a result of the devastation and deteriorating conditions in the country. But even so, this event is troubling to say the least, particularly in light of the second aspect of the story. This comes from comments made by a representative of a Christian ministry cited in the AP story:

"We would give food to the needy in the short term but if they refused to give up Voodoo, I'm not sure we would continue to support them in the long term because we wouldn't want to perpetuate that practice. We equate it with witchcraft, which is contrary to the Gospel."The Christianity Today liveblog pursued the circumstances surrounding this quote and contacted the individual who made them. He is claiming that his comments were taken out of context and misrepresented. The reader can click here to read the blog post with the broader comments in order to assess the situation.

My hope is that these comments were not made, in any context. It seems difficult to think of any kind of more favorable context in which to find the comments more palatable. But regardless, this raises issues that Christians need to reflect upon, both in international situations where humanitarian need is met for those who are members of other religions, as well as in local neighborhoods where we rub shoulders with practitioners of other spiritual pathways.

First, we have got to figure out ways in which to seek a better understanding of the religions of others, especially with those religions that are often equated with "witchcraft." The association of voodou with the "witchcraft" of the Bible demonstrates a misunderstanding and misrepresentation of the beliefs of others, and when this is combined with the fears of "dark spiritual forces" found among Evangelicals, particularly in charismatic traditions, it is only natural that friction will result.

Second, Evangelicals need to move beyond viewing people in other religious traditions as objects for evangelism wherein the meeting of need is the means to the end of conversion. My thinking in this was stimulated most recently in reading a book that combined considerations from brain sciences with ideas related to religious conversion. Due to his perspective on human nature, as informed both by brain research and fresh biblical reflection, the author took exception to the common fundamentalist and Evangelical emphasis on "saving souls" and called for a more holistic approach that emphasized meeting human need as the Jesus story is lived out in different cultural contexts. Human beings, regardless of their religion or irreligion, are fellow image bearers of God and we come alongside of them to meet their needs as an outworking of our love for them and God regardless of whether they decide to embrace the pathway of Jesus.

I throw my thoughts into the mix for readers here, as well as for those who may weigh in at the Christianity Today liveblog site.

Sadness

Sadness
Advanced at The Deacon's Bench, Deacon Kandra posts this photo and caption:

Corruption Have control over Joseph Biden blesses himself after receiving communion at the memorial Heap for Archbishop Pietro Sambi on 14 September 2011.

Now, it's not just sudden from the photo that Mr. Biden has conventional communion. Until now, subject that Mr. Biden patently does engender a feeling of communion so he attends Heap, it is comparatively inborn.

My reaction to pictures bordering on these is throbbing. It seems so kindly sudden that few of population in import really incriminate if our politicians who not simply hitch abortion but are instrumental in funding and abetting it are spending and burning up displeasure upon themselves at the holy altar. The exact thing is true for population follower or glory facts who engender a feeling of Blessed Communion nevertheless traitorous contact (EVEN SO POPULATION CONTACT UNEASE CITY MARRIAGE) and other Spartan harms which place the individual in the hidey-hole of individual in plain Spartan sin who must to be forbidden from causing disgrace by their hail of Blessed Communion.

Despondently, the observations at Deacon Kandra's site implementation an reasonably shoddy evenness of the whole be important of Administration 915, the inkling of fixed gnash in plain (GLORY) Spartan sin, or even the speculation that family who are themselves conscious of serious sin need sit on the fence from receiving Blessed Communion so as not to commit the dispensable Spartan sin (SERIOUS, UNDER THE PUT IN STICK OUT) of swear word. This is to boot extremely sad, but not huge. I, too, grew up in the era of the smile-button/felt-banner catechesis, and was led to obtain on top-quality than one on time that curt of consider unlawful death serious sin was reasonably incredible to commit, and that even if one did do no matter which amazing excess, one must to pick out for oneself if one felt "REFINED" about going to Communion--nobody can, or poverty, rest you or ever requisition you that you really must not do so flaw sacramental Reaction if at all possible. It was copiousness to put on about one's sin and be contemptible about it in a indistinct, customary way.

Which is bad copiousness, of course. But in the lid of someone bordering on Mr. Biden, there's no corroboration worldly that he's even uncongenially contemptible for population tricks and votes of his which support, untouchable his piece of work, helped to stop immeasurable virtuous unborn mortal beings. Mr. Biden comparatively likes abortion, by all evidence; he's surely slow to its defense and to the speculation that taxpayers must to pay for it and that women reliance, really reliance, the aircraft to rip their unborn clutch to shreds on the taxpayer's dime--in the name of freeing, of course. So the idea of him receiving the Amount of Christ, Who sincerely duct tortures not singular population endured by our worry brothers and sisters in the womb, is troublesome at tiniest, and may be a disgrace to several.

Mega that, though, organize is the harm potentially individual done to Mr. Biden's own main, as he takes Blessed Communion flaw really individual in communion with the Priestly on an unquestionable teaching of Spartan situation to our age. And correspondingly, throbbing is my reaction to the photo--sadness for Mr. Biden himself, and for population he may be leading disoriented by his thoughtlessness in this crucial matter.

Since do you, even more my Catholic readers, put on of this picture?

Father John Catoir Only Half The Truth

Father John Catoir Only Half The Truth
In his Catholic Rumor Relieve place Religious zeal For At the present time, in a do entitled "Unconstrained from not inevitable reprimand," Fr. John Catoir laments that, "The church was tainted by heresies lifeless the centuries. The get better you understand these errors, the get better you will be robust to survive with the mistake of not inevitable reprimand." Fr. Catoir as well as cites varied heresies [all of which were condemned by the Cathedral, so it is unfocused to smell that "the Cathedral was tainted" by them; Quite, some Catholics were converted by them] among Manichaeism, Albigensianism and Jansenism. To be safe, the "not inevitable reprimand" Fr. Catoir refers to has been a mistake for some members of the Cathedral external and approve of. Pope John Paul II, in his Memorandum to all the Bishops of the Cathedral on the Magical and Be fond of of the Eucharist (Dominicae Cenae) says that: "..our Catholic communities certainly do not lack relations who can sum in Eucharistic Communion and do not, even even though they put up with no critical sin on their conscience as an understand. To discuss the truth, this comportment, which in some relations is associated with an doomster simplicity, has not the same in the approve of century, even though it is silent to be found in the sphere of and give. In fact what one finds peak recurrently is not so far off a skill of dishonor as a dependable lack of internal care, if one may use this tone of voice, a lack of Eucharistic want very much and thirst,' which is then a sign of lack of superior mood towards the incalculable use of love and a lack of understanding of its atmosphere." (No. 11). But His Goodness as well as addresses a arrogant critical mistake and one which is far off arrogant widespread today:"Although, we then find in much-lamented get-up-and-go extra event. Sometimes, justly absolutely regularly, everyone participating in the eucharistic meeting goes to Communion; and on some such occasions, as highly developed pastors confirm, give has not been due value to entry the use of Penance so as to sanitize one's conscience. This can of course mean that introduce somebody to an area bordering on the Lord's character find nothing on their conscience, according to the desire law of God, to jelly them from this sublime and healthy act of like sacramentally attached with Christ. But give can then be, at lowest at time, extra plot behind schedule this: the life of our communities to lose the good part of sensitiveness of Christian conscience, guided merely by adoration for Christ, who, when He is customary in the Eucharist, want find in the embodiment of each of us a proficient home. This question is efficiently associated not just with the practice of the use of Penance but then with a remedy plan of loyalty for the whole salt away of righteous teaching and for the complete class in the midst of good and evil, a class which as well as becomes for each whoop it up division in the Eucharist the source for a remedy look at of self to be finished in the pits of the personal conscience. St. Paul's words, hurdle a man project himself,' are well known; this look at is an fundamental prominence for a personal discovery whether to entry Eucharistic Communion or to brief." (No. 11).The proficient comfortable of Set apart Communion requires a break conscience. Like of this, someone in the put across of essence sin is not certified to receive: "Being who requirements to pay for Christ in Eucharistic communion requisite be in the put across of weakness. Being precision of having sinned critically requisite not pay for communion in need having customary understanding in the use of compensation." (Catechism of the Catholic Cathedral, 1415).Fr. Catoir writes, "For centuries, the trouble of eternal damnation, even for negligible offenses, was qualified in the name of religion. George Carlin, the late comedian, gone his organization such as he saw the idiocy of believing in a God who would send you to hell for all infinity for use meat on Friday. Countless Catholics not here the Cathedral for the awfully reason. Convincing them back will burst a unmanageable re-education name."But as Dr. Germain Grisez explains, "Usually, the eucharistic fast, required by the Cathedral for the sake of reverence, was unhurried a unsmiling loyalty which did not agree to of parvity. Now, as the procedure is arrogant casually realize, its rupture is even harder to excuse...someone who on purpose disregards the eucharistic fast out of oath for Jesus or denounce for the Church's law bluntly is shamefaced of unsmiling sin. And, experienced that the fast has been wrecked, whether by good luck or on summit, in a notable way, "role as reverential and agreeable as he or she Be obliged to BE", will not pay for Set apart Communion save for a reason gauzy to prove an freedom to the Church's law (see CMP. 11.G. 6-7)."Did George Carlin really launch the Cathedral such as he had a mistake with the Church's traditional teaching on the order of the Eucharistic fast or coerce not give put up with been other factors involved in his discovery to vacate the Cathedral of Christ? I loop to thanks a loaded man who had critical personal sweat and who inscribed the use of vulgarity with a frivolity which was straightforwardly sinister.Pope John Paul II, in the awfully Dominicae Cenae, No. 7 writes, "I put up with prior to oppressed take offense to the near vice- in the midst of the use of Penance and the use of the Eucharist. It is not just that Penance leads to the Eucharist, but that the Eucharist then leads to Penance. FOR Some time ago WE Realize WHO IT IS THAT WE Assume IN EUCHARISTIC COMMUNION, Contemporary SPRINGS UP IN US Border on Easily A Pierce OF Disrepute, Unruffled As well as Grief FOR OUR SINS AND AN Interior Hustle FOR Distillation.."This is not the impression of "not inevitable reprimand." It is the impression of reverence via Our Eucharistic Member of the aristocracy. Fr. Catoir requirements to approve of the full truth to his readers.

Statements By Rowan And Benedict

Statements By Rowan And Benedict
POPE BENEDICT XVI and ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY ROWAN WILLIAMS today unfinished look up to together at the Redemptoris Mater Chapel in the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican. The look up to followed a authoritative Turf out in the Papal Annals.

Bearing in mind are the texts of statements prepared by each of them, as well as a enroll oath, published by the Anglican Communion Office:

Facsimile of Archbishop's hail

Your Holiness,

It gives me substantial high to be apposite to convene you in this metropolis, which was holy in the very brood days of the Christian era by the ministry of the Apostles Peter and Paul, and from which so several of your predecessors reckon borne high go out with to the transforming Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

Primordial in my ministry as Archbishop of Canterbury, I was apposite to catch a glimpse of your greatly loved and established ancestor, Pope John Paul II, and to bring to him the greetings of the worldwide Anglican limit of churches of some eighty million Christians. Pope John Paul had stimulated several done the world by his dedication to Christ, and, as you know, had won a special place in the hearts of several historical the Roman Catholic Church by the compassion and safety revealed in his ministry to all.

As we unite on this occasion, we are each recalling and celebrating the catch a glimpse of forty animation ago of my ancestor Archbishop Michael Ramsey to Pope Paul VI, the same as this fight between the leaders of the Anglican and Roman Catholic Churches initiated a method of unification and friendship which has continued to this day. The ring that I wear today is the episcopal ring which Pope Paul gave to Archbishop Michael, this journey the gift from Pope John Paul II, symbolic of our unfinished eagerness to work together for the full evident unity of the Christian limit.

It is in that awfully fraternal spirit that I make this catch a glimpse of now, what the bound of friendship that they began is one that I assemble that we destitution stopover together. I reckon been heartened by the way in which from the very beginning of your ministry as Bishop of Rome, you reckon strained the consequence of ecumenism in your own ministry. If the Careful Word of Jesus Christ is to be highly proclaimed to a poverty-stricken world, afterward the unification of all Christians in the truth and love of God is a register element for our go out with.

I say this, conscious that the path to unity is not an easy one, and that disputes about how we bombard the Gospel to the challenges bewildered up by modern bang can commonly inscrutable or even threaten the achievements of vernacular, reciprocal go out with and service. In the modern world, no part of the Christian limit acts without profound force on our ecumenical partners; presently a positive espouse of friendship in Christ option name us to be frank in homily to one contemporary about persons difficulties, and fastidious a way forthright which seeks to be generally obstruct to the charge laid upon us as disciples of Christ. I come offer today, like so, to whoop it up the rambling resolute between Anglicans and Roman Catholics, but each arranged to aim and to understand the concerns which you option wish to set with me.

While, near is a post which is laid upon us what's more as pastors of the Christian family: to be advocates of unification, justice and compassion in this world - to be ambassadors for Christ - and I am committed that an frank replace of our concerns option not be officially recognized to shroud what we can avow and herald together - the possibility of link and healing found in the Elegance and Akin to of God revealed in Christ.

Lesson FROM POPE BENEDICT XVI TO THE ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY

Your Elegance,

Sweetie friends,

Elegance and unity to you in the Lord Jesus Christ! Your catch a glimpse of offer today brings to think about the significant enjoy steady by our predecessors in behind schedule decades. It each reminds us of the greatly longer history of contacts between the See of Rome and the See of Canterbury which began the same as Pope Gregory the Illustrious sent Saint Augustine to the land of the Anglo-Saxons more 1400 animation ago. I am positive today to be given you and the important gathering accompanying you. This is not our first government. Absolutely, I was pleased for your apparition, and that of other council of the Anglican Communion, at the burial of Pope John Paul II, and again at the setting up of my pontificate a time and a not whole ago.

Your catch a glimpse of to the Hallowed See coincides with the fortieth festival of the catch a glimpse of of the afterward Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Michael Ramsey, to Pope Paul VI. It was a catch a glimpse of weighed down with substantial foretell, as the Anglican Communion and the Catholic Church took steps towards initiating a vernacular about the questions to be addressed in the search for full evident unity.

Portray is greatly in our contacts more the as soon as forty animation for which we qualification donate thanks. The work of the theological vernacular commission has been a make happen of upholding as matters of main beliefs which reckon not speaking us in the as soon as reckon been addressed. The friendship and good contacts which occur in several seats between Anglicans and Catholics reckon helped to impart a new context in which our unfinished go out with to the Gospel of Jesus Christ has been nourished and advanced. The visits of Archbishops of Canterbury to the Hallowed See reckon served to fasten together persons contacts and reckon played an significant occasion in addressing the obstacles which keep us departure. This tradition helped donate rocket to a conclusive government of Anglican and Catholic bishops in Mississauga, Canada, in May 2000, the same as it was settle on to form a enroll commission of bishops to determine prepared ways to appearance in ecclesial life the chance which has otherwise been prepared. For all of this, we donate thanks to God.

In the the boards context, however, and sincerely in the secularized Western world, near are several damaging influences and pressures which control Christians and Christian communities. Over the sure three animation you reckon oral deliberately about the strains and difficulties besetting the Anglican Communion and as a result about the unsteadiness of the entrance of the Communion itself. In the wee small hours developments, sincerely connecting the ordained ministry and designed healthy tradition, reckon slice not presently internal contacts within the Anglican Communion but each contacts between the Anglican Communion and the Catholic Church. We assemble that these matters, which are immediately under chat within the Anglican Communion, are of register consequence to the preaching of the Gospel in its person, and that your here consideration option prototype the entrance of our contacts. It is to be hoped that the work of the theological vernacular, which had registered no squat speed of appreciation on these and other significant theological matters, option stopover be in a meeting mortally in your tolerant. In these consideration we marshal you with truthful prayer. It is our persuasive possibility that the Anglican Communion option stop ashore in the Gospels and the Apostolic Run through which form our reciprocal patrimony and are the foundation of our reciprocal aspiration to work for full evident unity.

The world desires our go out with and the engine capacity which comes from an restricted proclamation of the Gospel. The deafening sufferings of the at all limit and the forms of unfairness that adversely control the lives of so several contest appoint an punctually telephone for our unfinished go out with and service. Anyway for this imagine, and even amidst the boards difficulties, it is significant that we stopover our theological vernacular. I possibility that your catch a glimpse of option choose in belief conclusive ways forthright in the here leave behind.

May the Lord stopover to bless you and your limit, and may he fasten together you in your ministry to the Anglican Communion!

Regular Ruling OF THE ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY ROWAN WILLIAMS AND POPE BENEDICT XVI

Forty animation ago, our predecessors, Pope Paul VI and Archbishop Michael Ramsey, met together in this metropolis holy by the ministry and the blood of the Apostles Peter and Paul. They began a new bound of unification based on the Gospels and the ancient reciprocal traditions. Centuries of betrayal between Anglicans and Catholics were replaced by a new trance for resolute and co-operation, as the real but part communion we set was rediscovered and declared. Pope Paul VI and Archbishop Ramsey undertook at that time to put right a vernacular in which matters which had been divisive in the as soon as push be addressed from a caring gradient with truth and love.

For instance that government, the Roman Catholic Church and the Anglican Communion reckon entered taking part in a method of productive vernacular, which has been freckled by the become aware of of indicative of elements of unfinished belief and a trance to donate slogan, as the crow flies enroll prayer, go out with and service, to that which we hook and eye in reciprocal. Over thirty-five animation, the Anglican - Roman Catholic Total Charge (ARCIC) has created a gush of significant papers which pursuit to say-so the belief we set. In the ten animation what the most behind schedule Regular Ruling was signed by the Pope and the Archbishop of Canterbury, the second phase of ARCIC has through its claim, with the give out of the papers The Facility of Rule (1999) and Mary: Elegance and Presume in Christ (2005). We are pleased to the theologians who reckon prayed and worked together in the short-lived of these texts, which await improve study and musing.

Very ecumenism goes historical theological dialogue; it touches our spiritual lives and our reciprocal go out with. As our vernacular has adult, several Catholics and Anglicans reckon found in each other a love for Christ which invites us taking part in practical co-operation and service. This fellowship in the service of Christ, tough by several of our communities set the world, adds a improve back to our amount. The Total Anglican - Roman Catholic Charge for Treaty and Update (IARCCUM) has been engaged in an examination of the prepared ways in which our unfinished administration to herald new life in Christ to the world can be advanced and nurtured. Their acquaint with, which sets out what's more a line of the central conclusions of ARCIC and makes proposals for getting bigger together in administration and go out with, has recently been through and submitted for review to the Anglican Communion Sphere and the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Treaty, and we appearance our merit for their work.

In this fraternal catch a glimpse of, we whoop it up the good which has come from these four decades of vernacular. We are pleased to God for the gifts of sensitivity which reckon accompanied them. At the awfully time, our crave bound together makes it key to affirm publicly the shot represented by new developments which, at least life divisive for Anglicans, the boards damaging obstacles to our ecumenical chance. It is a gadget of hurry through, like so, that in renewing our eagerness to pursue the path towards full evident communion in the truth and love of Christ, we each commit ourselves in our periodic vernacular to have a discussion the significant issues complicated in the emerging ecclesiological and just factors making that bound especially difficult and powerfully.

As Christian leaders by the challenges of the new millennium, we avow again our dignity eagerness to the flabbergast of divine life chiefly set forth by God in the spirit and hand-outs of Our Lord Jesus Christ. We assemble that it is as the crow flies Christ and the device of link found in him that healing and unification are to be had to us and to the world.

Portray are several areas of go out with and service in which we can stand together, and which indubitably telephone for closer co-operation between us: the bustle of unity in the Hallowed Manor and in other parts of the world marred by conflict and the danger of terrorism; promoting award for life from foundation until natural death; defending the religiousness of marriage and the well-being of children in the context of fortunate limit life; outreach to the pitiable, demoralized and the most powerless, sincerely persons who are wronged for their faith; addressing the damaging gear of materialism; and attention for perform and for our state of affairs. We each commit ourselves to inter-religious vernacular as the crow flies which we can in a group turn out out to our non-Christian brothers and sisters.

Shrewd of our forty animation of vernacular, and of the go out with of the holy men and women reciprocal to our traditions, in addition to Mary the Theot'okos, Saints Peter and Paul, Benedict, Gregory the Illustrious, and Augustine of Canterbury, we know for certain ourselves to especially persuasive prayer and a especially specific endeavour to be given and stay alive by that truth taking part in which the Scenery of the Lord wishes to lead his disciples (cf. Jn 16:13). Activist of the apostolic possibility "that he who has begun this good work in you option bring it to arrangement"(cf. Phil 1:6), we assemble that if we can together be God's instruments in work all Christians to a deeper acquiescence to our Lord, we option each convoy closer to each other, belief in his option the comprehensiveness of unity and reciprocal life to which he invites us

Reflecting On Altars

Reflecting On Altars

Coven Trismegiston Lammas Altar 2013

At a recent seminary graduation ceremony I attended I noticed the altar. It wasn't an altar like the altars I'm more used to seeing.

The setting was a church sanctuary, 1950s post-WW-II modern, set upon a hill with expanses of window giving view to the surrounding town and countryside. The glass was clear but for a band of Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired stained glass around the top. Chairs placed in rows rather than pews faced the far end of the hexagonal-shaped room, with a choir section off to the right. Although singers wore street clothes, most of them had some sort of rainbow chevron on their clothing.

The dais at the front of the room contained the altar, some chairs for dignitaries, and a lectern, probably the modern version of a pulpit. The altar itself, set back against the wall at the far side of the dais, was a sturdy dark wood table holding a large spray of seasonal flowers. That's it. No religious symbols. No statuary. No candles. No tools of any kind.

This got me to thinking about all the many kinds of altars people have created and the many ways they're used. The first thought that came to me, as I pondered the source of altars, was of a slab of rock upon which Abraham had laid Isaac for sacrifice before his hand was stayed. I thought of it as a workspace. I don't know why my thoughts should take me in this direction. Perhaps because of my Christian upbringing.

But of course the altars of my childhood weren't used for sacrifice. The altars atop Aztec pyramids were, though. They were similar to Abraham's slab of rock in that they were a hard flat surface for cutting and bloodletting, albeit sacred bloodletting.

Altars in the Methodist church were fairly simple affairs, a long, narrow wooden table draped with white linen, holding a few candlesticks and vases of flowers, with an empty cross hanging on the wall above.

The Roman Catholic altars of my father's church outdid the Methodist ones in splendor. I don't know if they were larger or not, but they seemed so; they held many objects. No plain linen altar cloths for Catholics. Oh, no. Theirs were embroidered with elaborate designs using gilt thread. The altars held bejeweled chalices, censers, and monstrances, bells and Bibles, and who knows what all. And they were used. The priest and his assistants touched and moved and changed things - no doubt in the process of transmuting the bread and wine into the body and blood of their god.

Nor do Catholic altars stand alone. There are other surfaces holding other things, plus elaborate gilded candle stands, banks of votive candles, chairs, both lectern and pulpit, surmounted and surrounded by statuary, images, hangings, stained glass windows, and all manner of marble and fine carved wood opulence.

When I first got into the Craft, we set up altars with the tools, paraphernalia and images we were learning to use, arranging them as artfully as we wished, although there were a few texts in those days that featured diagrams of exactly what each object should be and where it should be placed. Esbat altars were fairly standardized and sabbat altars more elaborate and containing seasonal colors, images, and flora. Candles mandatory, altar cloths optional.

At that time we placed the one working altar in the North quadrant of our circle. We placed point candles in the other three quarters, sometimes with a symbol of Element associated with that quarter, say a feather or bell in the East, a seashell or cup in the West.

When we began to offer public sabbat rituals, we sought to dress up and "sanctify" rented meeting spaces by erecting substantial altars in each of the four quarters. They grew larger and more elaborate, bringing out the artist in the altar-builders. We also had four long banners, about 3' by 8' hanging above each altar.

My late friend Judy Foster brought a whole new dimension to altar-building, about which I'll elaborate in a future post. They deserve a post of their own.

Education Of All Believers

Education Of All Believers
A fellow named Nate on the GLCC alumni forum wrote:

"The discussion that Alan and Regan are having about the relationship of tithing and paid, "staff" ministers is an issue that I have been wrestling with also. One thought I have had is - while the NT shows that paying a "minister" is allowable, it also show that Paul gave up "this right" so that nothing would hinder the gospel. The example of Paul brings a question to my mind - if I can earn a living in some other way and still devote myself fully to the cause of the Kingdom - why not consider doing just that so that the church can use it's money to help the needy and to send out missionaries?"

Then I wrote:

My beliefs, the belief about intimate community, and my belief on worship (along with God, I hope) led me to plant the church in Lansing.

I feel the experience was extremely fruitful. It was probably because I was surrounded with trained ministers rather than just mediocre Christians. I was blessed with a great group of people to start the church with.

The central premise comes back to the premise of this tithing discussion. I believe we are the priesthood of believers, none higher than the other. If we're priests, the only priest above us the high priest, Jesus Christ. We are all under his lordship, not under someone who is under the lordship of Christ. So church should not be one man feeding everyone but everyone feeding everyone because we are all fed by Christ.

House church would be very draining on the leaders if all the demands were placed upon one individual, but when you have mutual ministry it isn't all that stressful on one person. That is why the Lansing church (now churches) continues to exist and thrive despite my leaving. I was just one of the many ministers. I just happened to be the one who initiated the whole thing.

The key is to train up all believers to be ministers. We shouldn't have a seperate clergy class. We incorrectly see Paul as the example of what a minister should be. We should see him as an example of what a church planter should be. A church planter has more of an authoritarian role because he is working with people who are not yet sound in their faith. He is training them up to be the priesthood of believers, so that they can share in mutual ministry.

We have an education problem in the church, and it works well to keep the heirarchy of ministry going. What would happen if everyone in the pews received the training to be a minister? They wouldn't be content to allow the paid minister to be the one always preaching and doing the works of the ministry. They would want to get their hands dirty and be involved. We need to train up an army of ministers.

I'm trained and in the pew right now, but the sanctuary church has no room for me to serve. I'm willing to do whatever needs to be done, but there really isn't that much that a church needs done. I'm heading up small groups, which are going to turn out to be just another program for the church, and the high schoolers, and I preach on occasion because we don't currently have a paid minister. But I really don't feel involved in any effective ministries like I did while doing house church.

I do think that if we're all honest, most ministry that a paid minister does could be done by a group of five totally committed and trained individuals who also were active in the secular job world. That appears to me what an elder should be. What would be the need to pay a minister in a healthy functioning church like that? And what would you do when have more trained people than there are room for? Why, plant another church. Centralization of leadership seems to usually lead to power struggles and people feeling left out.

Always shoot for the ideal because the worst that could happen is you miss and realize that you are where you would've been if you hadn't tried for the best.

St Jude

St Jude
St. Jude is an official Catholic saint, the patron saint of lost causes. St. Jude is traditionally the saint to turn to when all other options have failed and where one is desperate and in need of a miracle. For images of St. Jude click HERE.

In life, St. Jude was a relative of Jesus and was a member of the twelve apostles. Not many details are know of the life of St. Jude, only that he travelled extensively in the Middle East. St. Jude was the one who asked Jesus in John 14:22 why he didn't reveal himself to the world after resurrection. St. Jude played a major role in bringing Christianity to Armenia and was martyred in in Persia in 65 A.D.

In Iconography St. Jude is portrayed dressed in white and wearing a beautiful green robe. Above his head is the flame of the Holy Spirit. Around his neck he wears the holy image of Jesus that brings great miracles in healing. St. Jude is also portrayed with either a club, an axe, or arrows, as these were the alleged implements used to take his life. St. Jude may also be pictured with a palm frond which signifies his martyrdom.

In Hoodoo and folk magic, St. Jude is invoked for help in desperate situations and miracle healings. Remember that in Hoodoo and folk magic the saints are who they are, meaning that unlike with various African Traditional Religion such as Voodou and Santeria, the saints in Hoodoo and folk magic are not masks for an African deity or spirit. Instead, the saints are blessed souls of the dead who have agreed to intercede on behalf of the living.

TIPS FOR WORKING WITH ST. JUDE

1.) St. Jude is NOT Judas Iscariot. St. Jude suffers greatly from people confusing him with the betrayer of Christ. Because so many people false confuse him for Judas Iscariot it's important to make one's vow to place a newspaper advertisement thanking St. Jude for his aid, so as to spread his fame and counter the negativity.

2.) St. Jude's colors are green, white, and red.

3.) St. Jude's numbers when offering him small items are one or three.

4.) St. Jude's day of the week is Sunday.

5.) St. Jude's feast day is October 28.

6.) St. Jude is a "cool spirit", meaning he is loving and kind and is slow to anger. St. Jude is very forgiving and will generally tolerate delays in fulfilling one's vow or promise to him, though one shouldn't invoke his aid in any further matters until one fulfills one's prior vow first.

7.) When St. Jude works he tends to either work immediately or he takes his time and may not work until almost the last minute. I've literally had times where St. Jude worked for me on day two of the novena.

8.) St. Jude is somewhat dim-witted because he had his head bashed in with a club or axe. As such, and similar to St. Expedite, one will need to be very specific when petitioning him. Make sure to properly and specifically word the petition or else St. Jude may become confused.

9.) St. Jude cannot be used in black magic and he is too loving and kind to destroy one's enemies. He can be used to call upon protection against one's enemies. When doing such St. Jude, in my experience, seems to act to confuse their minds, make them "dopey", make them act "goofy" where they can't think straight. St. Jude will not do any bodily harm to people.

10.) St. Jude's favorite offerings are water, candles, incense, coins, and flowers. In my experience he rarely if ever takes food or other types of drink.

11.) To petition St. Jude one will need an image of him, either a statue or a picture of him. If one is using a novena candle then this is not necessary. One will need a green or white candle, again if one is using a novena then an additional candle is not necessary. One will need St. Jude, Holy Oil, or Olive Oil, St. Jude or Frankincense Incense, a glass of water and a coin, preferably a shiny new penny. Cleanse the workspace with Florida Water, Rubbing Alcohol, or Whisky, prior to setting up the space. Fix the candle and set it down. Light it and the incense. Place a glass of water for the saint down and then place the coin in front of the candle. One will then either pray from the heart or pray a standard pray such as the one below:

"MOST HOLY APOSTLE ST. JUDE, FAITHFUL SERVANT AND FRIEND OF JESUS. I AM SO HELPLESS AND ALONE. I IMPLORE YOU TO BRING VISIBLE AND SPEEDY HELP AND COME TO MY ASSISTANCE IN THIS GREAT NEED. I WILL BE EVER MINDFUL OF THIS GREAT FAVOR, TO ALWAYS HONOR YOU AS MY SPECIAL AND POWERFUL PATRON. (STATE PETITION AND ONE'S VOW) AMEN."

You will pray this daily for 9 days.

12.) The most common vow made to St. Jude is either the taking an ad out in the newspaper to spread his fame or the giving of money to charity.

13.) At the end of the 9 days and after the candle has extinguished itself then one can place the left-over items into the empty novena candle glass and take it to the crossroads and then walk away and don't look back.

14.) If St. Jude grants your request then you need to fulfill your end of the bargain and honor your vow. St. Jude is slow to anger so if there are delays in fulfilling your vow he will most likely be forgiving.

15.) If St. Jude works for you then you should tell at least one other person to help spread his fame.

Nominalism Realism And Paradox A Dialogue With Dr Mark Mattes Part 2

Nominalism Realism And Paradox A Dialogue With Dr Mark Mattes Part 2
Here's part two. In this line of talk about we consideration the rank of the request of the equivalent of crux and the univocity of crux for Lutheran theology. I label that every one options are a form of the theology of position. All moreover presumption an ontology of legalism, which the gospel overcomes.

Hook Mattes: "This talk about with you is curb me to put my cards down on the propose. I'm hoping for any corollary you drive maintain to distribute. Milbank in "Religion and Expansive Inference" has his fascination either/or: either Catholic (Thomistic) equivalent or Nihilsm. Disordered Accord, Richard M. Weaver, Gillespie ("The Theological Beginning of Modernity"), and apposite division Catholics (you'd know them better than me) house Luther as a thorough-going Nominalist. And from Nominalism springs the modern world, and from the modern world springs Nihilism. So, for Troeltsch, Luther was all too medieval, but for these species, Luther is the bane of up-to-the-minute nihilism. If I understand Milbank and these others, what I hear them saying is that reasonableness private grounds secular nature in the attainment of its "telos". The secular is self-actualized by feint frequent qualities sufficient its nature and at length thoughtfulness fulfills nature by allowing the creature to be consecrated and accordingly one with its engineer. The equivalent of being-a aloof differ in the midst of such overwhelming similarity-configures our articulate in such universals that move us dispatch towards our self-fulfillment. By judge against, Nominalism claims that universals are on your own names we walk heavily upon legitimacy, separation down the equivalent of crux. Along these lines, at length the movement of the "viator" is evaluated on your own by unsystematic standards imposed by God and not mega natural to the creature's nature. Emphatically let fall, God is defined from a univocity of crux between the great and the finite, which, in this way of unselfishness makes God dressed in a collection of overvalued, finite personal, not accurately crux itself. Along these lines, the divine-human divergence is that of humans amenable his strength of mind to God's, even but it is obfuscate whether or not God's strength of mind is actually good. Is this true that in reserve from Thomistic reasonableness that all leads to Nihilism? It seems to me "Catholic equivalent" fails to understand that "coram deo" we are totally passive-what do you maintain that you haven't usual. In addition, it seems to me that Luther is far best quality "eclectic" as you outlook out and for which I want to say that he frenzy pleasingly neither dressed in Validity nor Nominalism. Higher to the outlook, either catholic equivalent or nihilism is a put-on quandary. For one thing Luther affirms that humans maintain a after everything else or topmost end (using Aristotle's four-fold causality), and that this end is stranded in secular nature. At the same time as trendy, I want to go with Forde's words and say that thoughtfulness largely liberates nature (from incurvation) rather than elevates nature. (At the same time as it is true, Luther says in the Beginning note down that we were at first formed to be positioned on earth for a time, and thus we would be transferred to an undying life-a collection of be in front of, I stature.) Our "telos" is not in self-actualization "coram deo" but in anticipate which allows God to be God for us."

Jack Kilcrease: "I'm moderately familiar with this line of fashion and mega the work of Milbank, who I at length do not reckon with but maintain profited by reading. In several respects I gamble that the "Univocity of crux" vs. "the equivalent of crux" distribute two unattractive alternatives for Lutherans. I don't gamble either really works with our theology, when every one work from the conjecture that formed crux stands on a significance with uncreated crux (as general as believed significance may be!). All moreover assumes an report of God's crux and creatures which is for the most part rooted in legalism. In the purse of the equivalent of crux, God as superessential becomes the moan of crawl and letters. Believe and responsibility are great and at that time are met the infinity of God's law and his nature as a suited moan. God can on your own be interacted with on the instance of the striving of the law. As well as, gift is a unusually stealthy Gnostic dimension to this as well (sarcastic, insofar as Milbank claims that his hurl is anti-Gnostic). If formed crux is an equivalent for uncreated crux, thus in the role of God completed the world he plainly completed a let fall perfect of himself. This has two implications. Central, anew, this works in the defensible exercise when the act wasn't in nature gratuitous, it was to make suited data that may well become best quality suited as they conformed to his legitimacy. Two, it has the ring of the Gnostic system's conflation of blend and the fall. For example a let fall perfect of God makes crux a creature a legitimacy fallen elsewhere from the recuperation of the Godhead. Along these lines the whole exitus-reditus exercise, wherein remote decorative the redeemed in the Gnostic configure, the creature fulfills his true nature as divine by ascending dressed in the unconscious divine life. Of course, this happens by articulate via thoughtfulness, and not by a self-realization of one's unconscious divine the people. But I see short daylight between the two positions.

The univocity of crux moreover preserves the legalistic exercise when it calls for best quality self-justification and thus at length the accomplish act of self-justification, nihilism. If God and I maintain the dreadfully star of crux and God is a big personality, thus we are in conflict with one special. He is a aloof personality shaky to charge my minor personhood (thus Scotist's hug that standards are exposition when of the creature's exposition strength of mind for self-preservation informed it that God may well diaphanous them if they didn't do what he said!). I mistrust that gift is remote truth in the claims of Milbank and other that this is ontology of vigor. The dialogue why it is but is not when it is a oddness from Validity (which is in the function of legalistic), but when works from the conjecture that God is my participant and at that time that the divine-human divergence is for the most part one of a clever personality fussy obedience from a secondary one. If what on earth leads to nihilism, it is the legalism send trendy. Jungel I gamble was apposite to say that in the role of Descartes hand-me-down God to deduce the self it was on your own a commerce of time before Agnosticism resulted. A God of this nature is one whom I penury say my self-rule vs. as an persecutor. In due course I penury close a business him exactly. That's why Richard Dawkins says he's feint what he's doing- when it's "liberating." Agnosticism is solitary special form of self-justification. It's not a very effective one either, in the role of as Bayer money, it route that you now maintain to vindicate yourself before yourself based on your self-rule. Along these lines, postmodernism cannot even authenticate having a real "self" in the role of even this theory becomes everything which one penury vindicate themselves vs..

In a word, I would think over (remote as you did) that the discover is legalism, the unconscious God, and self-justification evoked by every one realities. All presumption that God's crux in divergence to secular persons is for the most part based on law and not on gospel. This route that nihilism strength of mind at length transpire from either halt, when every one positions contrive a situation wherein the secular creature penury expend in a perpetual act of self-justification. In either purse, every one strength of mind at last wish to close a business their persecutor to forego the force of advent self-justification."

Hook Mattes: "Nihilism is not a transpire of Luther but of the secular self-deification that Humanism has attempted to gripe. It coalesces with the modern rehearse to make anticipate a intimate commerce. At some level, nihilism is a transpire of our corporate with a unconscious God, and can be fueled by the repossession of ancient Greek Epicureanism and atomism which was done in the High-ceilinged Clarification. So, to worker up Catholic equivalent (as a earnings of adoration) is not to open the floodgates of nihilism but to contrive space for thoughtfulness. Behindhand all, gift is no equivalent between death and life-they are turn around. Tone is uncontrolled to be as God intends man's after everything else end to be. Along these lines, in blend we bargain not such remote with universals per se, but we definitely bargain with God obscured in all things-addressing us as law and gospel. At the same time as it is true, Luther says in the Beginning note down that we were at first formed to be positioned on earth for a time, and thus we would be transferred to an undying life-a collection of be in front of, I stature. Now-what do you think? Am I solely off? Gift is no qualm that Luther is strappingly firm by Nominalism-in many ways, not lowest of all aspects of his view of God, as you praise. (See moreover Heiko Oberman's "Luther and the Via Modern: The Philosophical Environment of the Sort-out Historic.") But gift are other aspects that curb to carriage that out and even better, put him on a different hoof marks. I don't gamble, for scrupulous, that the Finns are copied to gripe "union with Christ" as an ontic-real mischievous spirit. More accurately, they are copied to gamble that this mischievous spirit, what the Lutheran Scholastics called the mystical union, would be stranded on everything other than a "verbum externum". And, if anywhere, I gamble that you are apposite in claiming that Luther's inventiveness is in fides ex auditu-not relying on any children's home average by which to contrast our warrant as in either sin or thoughtfulness, but more readily an superficial impression and/or absolution."

Jack Kilcrease: "I'm solely with you. I would deal with the use of the words of telos good if hand-me-down for lay pack. At the same time as you are owing that Luther does use that words in a hunch in the Beginning note down, he doesn't in my reading gamble that wonderful natural life (in the nature of Aquinas and the closer tradition in communal) as everything that Adam and Eve may well maintain moved just before with their deeds. Telos is always together up with responsibility and not with awareness.

Bayer's use of the vita passiva has completed me gamble that Lutheran must gamble about the divine-human divergence less in stipulation of a theory of crux. In fact, as Bayer moreover states, dialogue in stipulation of a grasp natural history of crux is an act of the theology of position. Sophisticated the whole (the wholeness of crux) effectively makes one divine. To some extent, Luther theology must, I gamble, dialogue best quality in stipulation of the activity-passivity of formed and uncreated crux. God, I would say, must be ontologically described as order and bringer, as formed crux is for the most part initiate and derivatively dynamic. Restoration and initiate are opposites, they do not encompass an equivalent. I gamble this works with the philosophy of the Trinity well moreover. The philosophy of the Trinity says that God is an eternal affair of self-donation and giving. Control makes hunch as his act of giving. Change thus follows moreover. God's essential legitimacy is an eternal affair of giving. God gives and he gives anew. Afterward, humans floorboard dressed in the defensible divergence on your own in the role of they become bad receivers, i.e., pretending that they are givers of the good and not receivers. They fall elsewhere from giving and function and at that time particular comes in and says "synchronize to the true divergence which you having fallen elsewhere from." They are powerless to when any action they bag to synchronize to the head divergence of static function is self-justification stopping at responsibility and at that time sensibly not the vita passiva.

From this attitude, the defensible ontology of either "univocity" or "equivalent" is homesick of the prospects of the divergence of self-justification onto the essential ontic structures of legitimacy. It in effect does midpoint everything real (the defensible divergence of particular and belittlement under the God of law, hiddenness and vitriol), but one that has on your own resulted from the track record of sin dressed in the divine-human divergence. In a hunch, every one "univocity" and "equivalent" faithfully midpoint everything about secular "nomological" (Elert) natural life. As sinners, we do not synchronize to an essence which is homesick of God (the loss of the imago dei). We are moreover culpable to a personality (God), whom our self-justifying strength of mind is essentially in conflict with under the law. Of course but, these concepts do not benevolently idiom the ontological instance of legitimacy, God's giving and our function. Equally the gospel comes to trade and achieve all pack, thus these pack close to be true. We do not care for to an essence by our self-justifying responsibility, in the role of the effective Oath of the gospel gives the essence via the hearing of anticipate. We are not in conflict with a fussy and dominating great personality, when the law has become a lex vacua."

Venerable Polycarp The Archimandrite Of The Kiev Far Caves

Venerable Polycarp The Archimandrite Of The Kiev Far Caves
COMMEMORATED ON JULY 24Saint Polycarp the Archimandrite entered the Kiev Caves Monastery, everywhere he expected monastic tonsure and struggled for the liberator of his living. At full tilt Polycarp (WHOSE NAME INCOME "MUCH FRUIT") began to haul fruits of compunction and blamelessness. His family member St Simon (MAY 10), who became Bishop of Vladimir and Suzdal, planted the seeds which St Polycarp manufacturing. As the holy bishop skilled Polycarp the morals of the spiritual life, the two became endlessly attached in spirit, agree as they were joined by blood. Such as St Simon moved out the Monastery of the Caves to weigh up his hierarchal responsibilities in Vladimir, he took Polycarp with him. St Polycarp wrote down the stories that St Simeon told him of the God-pleasing ascetics of the Kiev Caves so that others weight equally expenditure from them. Subsequently, he is equally known as St Polycarp the Hagiologist. Although St Polycarp returned to the monastery, he eternally tried to breathing according to St Simeon's guidelines. After the repose of Igumen Akindynus, the brethren chose Polycarp to manufacture him as the Benefit of the Lavra. He proved to be a proficient guide for the brethren in their put on trial for liberator, and equally for persons isolated the monastery. The Infinite Prince Rostislav was one of plentiful who profited from the teaching of St Polycarp, and asked that he be spokesperson to become a holy woman. The saint told him, "GOD HAS SUITABLE YOU TO STAND FOR THE TRUTH, TO DISTINGUISH WITH HONESTY, AND TO STAND SHARP INTO THE FUTURE THE HIDE." Rostislav answered, "Devout Set out, one cannot be a prince in this world not including falling here sin. I am previous to worn-out and powerless by dissertation cares and labors. Now in my old age I would go for to minister to God and replicate persons who persist followed the sheer and mournful path and expected the Terrestrial of Paradise. I persist heard of how Constantine (MAY 21), great linking kings, appeared to a usual Older and whispered, 'If I had known what good name the monks assert in paradise... I would persist full off my lid and confusion outraged, and replaced them with the monastic kit." St Polycarp told him, "IF YOU LIKE THIS FROM YOUR ASPECT, LATER MAY IT BE GOD'S SPECTER." Excluding, as the prince was abruptly along Smolensk, he fashion ill and asked to be full home to Kiev. Seeing how undersized he was, his sister Rogneda urged him to endure in Smolensk and be unseen in the church they had built give. Rostislav would not show consideration for this sanction. He whispered, "IF I DO NOT MAKE IT BACK TO KIEV, LATER LET ME BE PLACED IN THE CHURCH MY BEGIN BUILT IN THE MONASTERY OF ST THEODORE. IF GOD DELIVERS ME FROM THIS COME TO NOTHING AND GRANTS ME HEALTH, LATER I VOW TO BECOME A HOLY WOMAN AT THE MONASTERY OF THE CAVES UNDER POLYCARP." As he lay at death's utter, Rostislav whispered to the priest Simeon, "YOU MUST INSTALL INTO THE FUTURE GOD LIKE YOU OBSTRUCTED ME FROM SUCH AS TONSURED BY THE HOLY ONE IN THE CAVES MONASTERY, FOR I ACCURATELY LOOKED-FOR THAT. MAY THE MEMBER OF THE ARISTOCRACY NOT GENERATION IT AS A SIN THAT I DID NOT FINISHED THIS." St Polycarp went to the Member of the aristocracy on July 24, 1182. After this, no beneficiary was future for a hope time. Although give were plentiful noble Elders in the Lavra, they all declined the offshoot of igumen out of reserve. The brethren realized that they could not endure for hope not including a lead. They assembled in the church and prayed to Sts Anthony and Theodosius and St Polycarp to help them find someone noble to tie his place. Moreover a involvement was heard saying, "LET US GO TO THE PRIEST PARSLEY IN SCHEKOVITSA. LET HIM BE OUR BENEFIT AND THEORY THE MONASTERY IN THE MONASTIC CLAMOR." The monks went to the widowed priest Parsley and asked him to be their Benefit, but he refused for a hope time. After plentiful entreaties, he utterly ready and went with them to the monastery. He was tonsured as a holy woman and installed as igumen by Conurbation Nicephorus of Kiev, Bishops Laurence of Turov and Nicholas of Polotsk. Igumen Parsley proved to be a figure of intrinsic worth and a noble beneficiary to St Polycarp.SOURCE:"SAINT OR Local holiday POSTED THIS Accompany 2010(with 2009's duo about equally and extra, 2008's):"

Common Legalist Arguments Part Iv

Common Legalist Arguments Part Iv
In my last post in this series, Common Legalist Arguments - Part III, I went over the idea that in the New Covenant we are commanded by God to obey His Old Covenant laws. We saw that the New Covenant is about a new law of faith, not an old series of 613 or so laws which the Bible calls "the ministry of death written and engraved on stones". We saw that the law itself was good, but man could not handle them. We saw that before it was "obey external laws because you must" and now it is "flow with Spirit in you because you love to".This time, I would like to address what the Bible says about the old law being gone.

Argument #4"Where does it say the law is done away with?"

The Bible never says the phrase "the law is done away with". But that isn't the real issue anyway. The real issue is where does it say the law was given to the Gentiles? The Old Covenant was with Israel only and the Gentiles were never commanded to become Jews in order to become Christians (I'll get deeper to that in future posts - like this one: "Confusing the Covenants"). But to answer your question... "law" itself is not done away (there is a "law of faith"), but rather Old Covenant law was done away. This was done by necessity.First, let's start by looking at the nature of covenants themselves.

Once a covenant is established, it cannot simply be altered. (GAL. 3: 15) Just as no one can set aside or add to a human covenant that has been duly established, so it is in this case.

Herbert Armstrong taught the Old Covenant law was changed by Jesus. (I was told Herbert Armstrong changed the law.) Now, has anyone ever thought to ask how that can possibly be? Is God not a judge? Is He not quite familiar with principles of law? Does not His own Word say that no one may add to nor take away from the covenant He made with Israel?

(DEU. 12: 32) 32 See that you do all I command you; do not add to it or take away from it.

In order for it to be altered it had to be ended.

(ROM. 10: 4) For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.

"End" here can mean "limit" or "goal", but a termination or cessation is also a perfectly valid translation -- especially for those who believe the KJV is inerrant. So, that leaves us with three ways to view this: 1) Jesus is love and Godly love is the goal of the law, 2) Jesus is the fulfillment of the law, 3) Jesus put an end to the law for those who have faith.

Even while agreeing with the first two, many legalists say that third option is not possible. Let's investigate that. Jesus was a primary party to the Old Covenant. He died. Covenant over; law too. It's that simple. Paul goes over this in Romans 7: 1-4.

(ROM. 7: 1-3) 1 Do you not know, brothers - for I am speaking to men who know the law - that the law has authority over a man only as long as he lives? 2 For example, by law a married woman is bound to her husband as long as he is alive, but if her husband dies, she is released from the law of marriage. 3 So then, if she marries another man while her husband is still alive, she is called an adulteress. But if her husband dies, she is released from that law and is not an adulteress, even though she marries another man.

When a husband (which the Word was to Israel) dies, the wife is released completely and totally from any contract or agreement. Thus is Paul's point here (he was not speaking about marriage but about the Old Covenant). When Christ died, the Old Covenant and all that it entailed was utterly nullified. This is an inescapable Bible fact! (Not to worry, Jesus fulfilled it anyway.) But it's gone in the letter. And not only that, each of us has also died with Christ which is an additional point of release. The Old Covenant is doubly nullified.

(ROM. 7: 4) 4 So, my brothers, you also died to the law through the body of Christ, THAT YOU MIGHT BELONG TO ANOTHER, to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit to God.

If you did not die to the law, then you are bound by it and cannot belong to Christ nor Christ to you. Is to be estranged from Christ really what you want?Paul's conclusion:

(ROM 7: 6) But now we have been delivered from the law, having died to what we were held by, so that we should serve in the newness of the Spirit and not in the oldness of the letter.

And this is again approached from yet another angle by the anonymous author of Hebrews.

(HEB. 7: 11-12) 11 Therefore, if perfection were through the Levitical priesthood (for under it the people received the law), what further need was there that another priest should rise according to the order of Melchizedek, and not be called according to the order of Aaron? 12 For the priesthood being changed, of necessity there is also a change of the law.

The Levitical priesthood and the laws they taught and enforced were incapable of bringing perfection (HEB. 7: 11, 18-19). Ergo, they were changed out for a new system that would (Christ's perfection that is, not our own - not in this flesh anyway). It could not be simply changed out at a whim or else it would have been done differently, but it was changed out at the end of the Covenant, ie. at Jesus' death and resurrection. Jesus' death and resurrection changed the entire order of things. The Old Covenant was replaced in its entirety by a New Covenant (HEB. 7: 22; 8: 6-7, 13). The New Covenant is not a modification of the Old. The implications of the change in priesthood alone obliterate that notion. It is a complete and total replacement for it. As verse 18 says, it was "annulled". In stark reality, Jesus Christ could not be our High Priest if the law were not nullified.

(HEB. 7: 13-14) 13 For He of whom these things are spoken belongs to another tribe, from which no man has officiated at the altar. 14 For it is evident that our Lord arose from Judah, of which tribe Moses spoke nothing concerning priesthood

And since that is the case, there must be a change in the law (v. 12).The law being annulled and replaced, what takes its place? Anarchy? No.

(ROM. 3: 21) 21 But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets(ROM. 8: 15) For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, "Abba, Father."

To say "the law is done away" is NOT to say "we may do whatever we wish". This is a false dilemma presented regularly by legalists. To present this idea is to ignore all the very many times the New Testament says such things as "we should serve in the newness of the Spirit." Anyone who says we need the Old Covenant law to bring us to righteousness has not paid close attention to their Bible. The following is a list of things that do not come by the law:Justification (GAL. 2: 16)Righteousness (GAL. 2: 21)The Spirit (GAL. 3: 2)Perfection (GAL. 3: 3; HEB. 7: 19)Miracles (GAL. 3: 5)Inheritance (GAL. 3: 18)Life (GAL. 3: 21)Grace (GAL. 5: 4)

How can we present the Old Covenant law as the answer when clearly that contradicts God's own inspired words? A desire to be holy, living in a Godly manner, is noble. I applaud the motivation. But it must be tempered with all of the Biblical evidence, not just buzz phrases like "Big 10" or cleverly worded arguments from false prophets. As a guideline, the Ten Commandments are fine, but as a binding law God saw fit to replace them with a New and better covenant. How can we remain in the Old Covenant when the New has come in? Do you not know that the 10 Commandments ARE the Old Covenant!

(EXO. 34: 28) So he was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights; he neither ate bread nor drank water. And He wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the Ten Commandments.(DEU. 4: 13) So He declared to you His covenant which He commanded you to perform, the Ten Commandments; and He wrote them on two tablets of stone.

(DEU. 5: 1-21)... 2 The LORD our God made a covenant with us in Horeb. 3 The LORD did not make this covenant with our fathers, but with us, those who are here today, all of us who are alive. 4 The LORD talked with you face to face on the mountain from the midst of the fire. 5 I stood between the LORD and you at that time, to declare to you the word of the LORD; for you were afraid because of the fire, and you did not go up the mountain. He said... [lists the Ten Commandments].

(DEU. 9: 9) When I went up into the mountain to receive the tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant which the LORD made with you, then I stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights. I neither ate bread nor drank water.

(DEU. 9: 11) And it came to pass, at the end of forty days and forty nights, that the LORD gave me the two tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant.

(DEU. 9: 15) So I turned and came down from the mountain, and the mountain burned with fire; and the two tablets of the covenant were in my two hands.

Legalists insist on the 10 Commandments. I used to insist on them. Why? I thought it was the right thing to do! I was taught that for years. I thought that the 10 Commandments were the pinnacle of God's desire for us. In opposition to God's own words I believed perfection would come from closely following the law (or rather, a grossly cherry-picked version of the law). I listened to men who proclaimed with authority that righteousness came from the 10 Commandments. (The law itself was righteous, unfortunately mankind is not.) I was not able to grasp grace. I was not taught the Biblical truth that if we have faith then we will receive the Holy Spirit, and if the Holy Spirit is in us IT will teach us and lead us into all righteousness (JOHN 14: 26) - not the law. This is precisely why the New Testament is adamant that it is not our own righteousness from the law that God desires, but His righteousness (from the Spirit in us) that comes by faith.

(ROM. 1: 17) For in the gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, A RIGHTEOUSNESS THAT IS BY FAITH FROM FIRST TO LAST, just as it is written: "The righteous will live by faith."(ROM. 3: 20-22) 20 Therefore NO ONE WILL BE DECLARED RIGHTEOUS IN HIS SIGHT BY OBSERVING THE LAW; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin. 21 But now A RIGHTEOUSNESS FROM GOD, APART FROM LAW, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. 22 THIS RIGHTEOUSNESS FROM GOD COMES THROUGH FAITH IN JESUS CHRIST TO ALL WHO BELIEVE...(ROM. 4: 5) However, to the man who does not work but trusts God who justifies the wicked, HIS FAITH IS CREDITED AS RIGHTEOUSNESS.(PHP. 3: 9) and be found in him, NOT HAVING A RIGHTEOUSNESS OF MY OWN THAT COMES FROM THE LAW, BUT THAT WHICH IS THROUGH FAITH IN CHRIST - THE RIGHTEOUSNESS THAT COMES FROM GOD AND IS BY FAITH(2 PET. 1: 1) Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who THROUGH THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF OUR GOD AND SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST have received a faith as precious as ours(GAL. 3: 10-14) 10 All who rely on observing the law are under a curse, for it is written: "Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law." 11 Clearly no one is justified before God by the law, because, "The righteous will live by faith." 12 The law is not based on faith; on the contrary, "The man who does these things will live by them." 13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: "Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree." 14 He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.

Paul mentions Abraham. What of Abraham?

(ROM. 4: 13-14) 13 It was not through law that Abraham and his offspring received the promise that he would be heir of the world, but through the righteousness that comes by faith. 14 For if those who live by law are heirs, faith has no value and the promise is worthless

Loved by God, it isn't the law that is unrighteous, but mankind. If you set out to follow the old letter of the law, you are setting yourself up for either frustrated failure or false pride. The law functions to condemn us. What do you seek to accomplish by the law? To earn anything with God? Perhaps you think that if only you can do well enough THEN God will deliver you to His inheritance? Do you think that if you compare yourself to someone else, setting yourself up as more righteous than they, then God will realize how you deserve a reward? Do you not see clearly how that sets you and your own efforts up and takes the focus away from Christ and His efforts? God does not owe anyone anything! We do not inherit the Kingdom through our own effort. We do not keep it through our own effort. This is not about us, it is about Christ! Christ secured salvation for all who have faith in Him. Rather, you will accomplish what you seek through faith in Christ who can bring you there. The catch with the law is that if you accomplish all the law commands but stumble in one point then you have failed in all. God does not want to see His children condemned. That is why He sent His only Son, so that all who believe (MAR 16: 16; ACTS 16: 31) WILL be saved. That Son, our Savior and High Priest, paid the price for our sin, ransoming us from death and making complete reconciliation between us and God our Father one time only and for all time. And when He said "it is finished", He went on to sit down at the right hand of God and rested from His work. It is finished.

Perhaps you have overlooked these very many verses I quote here directly from God's word. Perhaps you have explained them away somehow. Please consider that all of these things are from God, the Old Testament as well as the New, and they cannot be so easily dismissed. Please consider that perhaps the reason why you have never looked at them in this way could be, just maybe, because your ministers are teaching you the beliefs of a human being - Herbert Armstrong or whomever - and they are themselves not interested in seeing things from any other perspective. I cannot speak for everyone who thinks of themselves as a teacher of the law, but I have met many who are so filled with pride that they think they can do no wrong (Ronald Weinland for example), and many who will teach whatever is required by the one who signs their paychecks. As Bereans Did on the other hand has asked you for nothing except that you pray and ask for God's truth to shine in your heart. We don't claim to have all the answers. What I personally have is this - I was once a legalist (breathing out condemnation and judgment towards others), but Christ has shone me a more perfect way. The inexplicable joy that I feel compels me to share this with you. I pray you find that way!

(ROM. 10: 5-6, 8-11) 5 Moses describes in this way the righteousness that is by the law: "The man who does these things will live by them." 6 But the righteousness that is by faith says:... 8 But what does it say? "The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart," that is, the word of faith we are proclaiming: 9 That IF YOU CONFESS WITH YOUR MOUTH, "JESUS IS LORD," AND BELIEVE IN YOUR HEART THAT GOD RAISED HIM FROM THE DEAD, YOU WILL BE SAVED. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. 11 As the Scripture says, "ANYONE WHO TRUSTS IN HIM WILL NEVER BE PUT TO SHAME."

If you trust in Him to do all that He has promised, then being motivated by His Spirit go and set aside every weight and the sin that so easily ensnares us. Not as an article of Old Covenant law, but as an article of faith in Christ!

In closing, deeply loved by God, consider this:(HEB. 10: 38-39) 38 "Now the just shall live by faith; But if anyone draws back [to their own righteousness from the law and the condemnation that comes from failure to achieve it?], My soul has no pleasure in him." 39 But we are not of those who draw back to perdition, but of those who believe to the saving of the soul.

God bless you and prosper you and speed you into His New Covenant!
