Which is where we come in, following Justin, Malcolm, Jenna, Cole and Bailey, the children of the hated Moonset, moved from place to place and held by witch guardians who can barely hide their disdain for the troublesome teens. Until the latest move to a town where it all began - a town with a warlock lurking in the shadows, demanding the Moonset children.
Are the teens there as bait? Or as collateral damage and quiet removal?
Look at that synopsis and drool, folks. A secret magical society with some excellent world building on the nature and workings of magic, hints of far more to come. A coven gone to the dark side and executed, their children bonding together both through unknown magic and desperate self-preservation in a society that is determined to hold them responsible for their parents' crimes. Their close bonds, their anger, their trust issues and their desire for acceptance all at war, overlaid with a dark plot to try and draw them into the same dark side their parents embraced. But then, a new thread to the mystery - maybe their parents were not so simple as was previously suggested...
Seriously, how could you not write an awesome story with this as its seed? It's a wonderfully imaginative gift, there's so much there, there's essences of originality, compelling hooks for a whole story and so many wonderful things to explore. How could this book not be awesome?
No, really... how could you not write an excellent book with this?
That isn't a rhetorical question. Because I'm at a loss how such a wonderful world, setting and idea could produce this rather dull book. It's like seeing someone take a wonderful block of gold veined marble and making door stops with it.
Primarily, this is because of the writing. It's very overwritten, very over descriptive and metaphors and similes have been crammed in like commuters in a London Tube at rush hour. And even less smoothly than that one. If you cut out the excess verbiage this book could have been half as long and much faster moving; we don't need everything described in such vivid and exhaustive detail - it doesn't set the scene, it distracts from it and focuses on irrelevant minutia. Like the travelling, we're treated to several paragraphs of Justin wondering whether they're in New York state - yes, you are, now move on! And not only do we have a lot of "tell" rather than "show" but sometimes the tell is used to try and overwhelm the show. Like Justin muses how he's disturbed at how many of their days end with bandages and bleach (i.e. they get hurt a lot) and we see this by... it never happening again the whole book. Or happening again before this incident either. In fact, since before this they were just moved around while Jenna got them expelled, I fail to see why it was a major factor before.
Sometimes the writing even destroys the mood - like describing a Wraith in wonderfully creepy terms and then having him have a voice that hisses like a deflating tire. Really? Because I was with your cinder crackling, bone crunching, sibilant wraith, only now he's deflating like some kind of spooky Michelin man. Less is more sometimes. Or there's similes that are just so over the top that the scene is ruined by my mad cackling, example:
"Cut the wraith down like it was the first born son, and this was a plague."
There's no way the author wrote that line with a straight face.
The book is also hopelessly focused on one character - Justin. No-one else is explored with any great depth, no relationships are truly developed and explained or shown. Everything is from Justin's viewpoint and most of that contains a lot of telling, a lot of monologuing and a lot of angst. It doesn't help that's he's more than a little self-absorbed. He thinks of his siblings - but only in the shallowest ways and usually in terms of protecting them or, more often, preventing them getting in trouble. He doesn't have any kind of friendship with them or even any kind of relationship - they're burdens to control and irritations to endure.

For the last ten years, he has been studying the Illuminati conspiracy and has made contact with insiders. The result is a novel, "Divina Insidia - The Divine Trap," which explains the Illuminati conspiracy to the incredulous, and contains new insights and nuggets of information for old hands.
Most important, Roussel presents the conspiracy in a simple and plausible way, throwing our collective predicament into frightening relief.
"OLIGARCHIC FAMILIES"
According to Roussel, twelve "oligarchic families" have grown indescribably wealthy by lending "money" to governments at interest. These are the central bankers. Most but not all are Illuminati Jews. Their wealth is in the trillions. Bill Gates and Warren Buffett are paupers in comparison.
It all becomes very clear. These families have been milking us for centuries. We are quite literally their "cattle" i.e. goyim.
The whole of modern history can be explained by their farm management practices. Wars are started to increase the debt and cull the herd. The goal is to cull the herd to 500 million and chip the remnant. These families and their henchmen own 80% of the world's wealth and do nothing useful yet believe the impoverished majority are parasites.
Roussel, (left,) explains how compound interest resulted in astronomical exponential gains year-after-year. All religions have banned lending at interest to prevent what actually has occurred: this immense wealth and power has fallen into the hands of Satanists.
The world's major banks are mere proxies for these twelve families who create the money out of nothing. (The banks get their "money" from them.) Greece is the target now but eventually the whole world will be squeezed like an lemon to get this "money" back. ("We will absorb all the wealth of the world," is how Cecil Rhodes described it to his patron Nathan Rothschild.)
They threaten depositors will lose their savings if banks fail. But, it is really these twelve families of generational Satanists who want their pound of flesh.
If our governments weren't run by their lackeys, they would protect the deposits and let the "oligarchic families" twist in the wind. Roussel doesn't name the families but obviously one is the Rothschilds.
Roussel explains that fractional reserve banking is a ponzi scheme. They lend 90 for every 100 on deposit. Those 90 are deposited somewhere else and 81 more dollars are lent. So it continues ad infinitum.
Obviously, the way to fight this beast is to withdraw your cash from the bank.
THE NOVEL
Roussel's narrative revolves around a Rothschild who has a spiritual revelation and wants to issue a warning. He selects an attractive young Swiss journalist, Ann Standford, to write a book and deposits a fortune into her bank account.
He then takes her on a Cook's Tour of Illuminati landmarks -- the Georgia Guidestones, a Bilderberg meeting, Bohemian Grove etc. -- explaining some aspect of the conspiracy in each place.
He describes its origins in paganism and the Kabbalah, which led to the Illuminist philosophy. But ultimately, it boils down to debt and interest.
"You want to defeat us?" Roussel's Rothschild says."Abolish loans with interest and don't create any more money. Economic cycles will disappear. Wealth will no longer be concentrated in the hands of a few "mega creditors" like me and money will gain value in time. What you bequeath to your children will have more value than when you first got it."
Meanwhile another Illuminati "superior" has put assassins on their trail. Roussel's storytelling is workman-like and his wholesome European Christian sensibility is uplifting.
The ending is quite unexpected and inspired. The book is worth reading for it alone. Roussel leaves us with a credible vision of defiance and hope. All we need do is affirm the Truth and resist evil. The whole rotten structure will collapse.

With so many different RPGs on the market, it's common practice to compare them to one another. The thing is, comparing RPGs is tricky -- and, as a result, is often done poorly. It's easy to get caught up comparing individual features between two systems, when what you really want is something more holistic. The crucial thing you really need to know about an RPG is, of course, what sort of game you can play with it!
Some groups will have a pretty similar experience no matter what system they pick up. Some systems will feel different to different groups. Be that as it may, we can come up with some vocabulary that -- "in general terms" -- will tell us about the sort of play experience a certain game is designed to create. In the end, this should let us more effectively explore different play styles, as well as choose games appropriately once we've figured out which styles work for us.
The key ideas we'll be using are "crunch"/"smoothness" and "immersion"/"detachment". Let's quickly define these terms.
Crunchy/Smooth
Crunchy games use numbers to model the in-game world. They have a robust rules structure underlying play which allows a great variety of penalties, bonuses, spells, abilities, combat maneuvers, you name it. Unsurprisingly, they tend to have thick rulebooks to explain all of the nuance, and lots of boxes on the character sheets in order to show it off.
Crunchy games tend to feature characters defined on multiple levels. In Pathfinder, for example, a character's ability to find traps is based on their Wisdom modifier and their number of Perception ranks, but is also affected by whether or not the character is a rogue, and their choice of feats and traits. In GURPS, a character's accuracy with a sword depends on their Dexterity and their skill level in Broadsword, plus they may have fancy advantages like Weapon Master (which grants bonuses when using one specific weapon, such as Aragorn's Anduril). As a result, creating and advancing characters takes a lot of time. On the plus side, this means that players have a great deal of freedom in crafting their characters. Some of them will find this to be satisfying, and may even build characters that will never see play just for the sake of exploring synergies. The downside, of course, is that GMs sometimes become irritated when their five-hour creations are taken down in the first five minutes of combat.
Just as players have detailed control over their characters, GMs have detailed control over the environment. Difficulties for rolls can be fine-tuned to exactly where the GM wants them to be. Baddies can have exciting trademark moves -- PCs can be petrified by a gorgon or drained by a vampire. Those options exist within the rules, so there's no haggling or worrying about how best to do it.
The strength of crunchy games is that there are rules to handle whatever you want to do. The weakness is that you have to keep track of the rules. With that in mind, let's look at smooth games.
If crunchy games are high-tech office buildings with HDMI cables built into the walls and independent thermostats in every room, smooth games are log cabins. You lose all of the features, but what you gain is simplicity.
Smooth games hand-wave away basically all of the numbers. The rules have a few general structures, but don't explicitly handle weird corner cases. Character sheets are just a sketch of the character -- they can guide your play, but they certainly don't simulate anything in detail. Difficulties for rolls are coarsely assigned, if they exist at all.
Lasers & Feelings character sheet
At the intensely smooth level, you have games like Risus and Lasers & Feelings, where you can "easily" fit the character sheet on a quarter of a sheet of paper. Fate and World of Darkness fall at a more mainstream level, and are still pretty smooth. They have thick rulebooks, but they're mostly examples -- you can honestly fit the rules in a dozen pages or so, as they illustrate on Free RPG Day.
Immersive/Detatched
At the immersive end of the scale, play tends to focus on immersing the player in their character's experiences, often through detailed question-and-answer about the characters' surroundings. The line between player and character can even become blurred, as characters benefit a great deal from player skill -- actions are often resolved using a player's problem-solving skills or social savvy, rather than with dice and ability scores.
The process of searching a dungeon corridor for traps is a common and illustrative example of immersive play. A player may ask detailed descriptions about the walls, floor, and ceiling of the hallway, wary of scorch marks or blowdart-sized holes. They may pour water on the floor to look for deep cracks or a gradual incline. They may even carry ten-foot poles, used to check the floor for trap-triggering pressure plates.
The upsides of immersive play are fairly evident -- players feel close to in-game events, and player skill is rewarded. There are downsides as well, of course. The pace of play is slowed, significantly, compared to more detached games -- detailed discussion takes time! In addition, immersive games typically use dice for physical tests (swimming, climbing, kicking down doors) but not for social and mental tests (such as negotiations with NPCs or perception checks). Some folks object to this dichotomy, since physical and mental/social skills tend to be treated symmetrically in the rules as written.
Immersive play is traditionally associated with the old-school camp -- gamers who play old editions of D&D or retroclones inspired by them. In fact, this style of play is explicitly endorsed in the often-shared Quick Primer for Old School Gaming.
As far as I can tell, old-school D&D is conducive to immersive play because players interact minimally with dice. This is not to say that the original D&D was a smooth game -- a quick look at the to-hit tables and arbitrary-feeling level restrictions will show you that it's not -- but it's never imperative that the "players" be the ones to deal with the mechanics. Taking this idea to its logical extreme (the most immersive game possible) would probably mean handing all of the character sheets and dice to the GM, and having them handle "everything" behind the curtain. Players would be strictly role players, never interacting with the mechanical nitty-gritty. They wouldn't even need to know the rules of the game! There are quite a few games that could (in principle) be played this way, including BRP, World of Darkness, and even GURPS.
Detached play -- that is, play where the players are "zoomed out" from their characters -- is the opposite.
In detached play, immersion is deprioritized, allowing players to engage directly with the mechanics, such as through tactical combat with strict movement and action restrictions, or abilities which may optionally be applied to a character's rolls (think the attribute pools in Numenera or Power Attack in Pathfinder).
Detached games can also have actions available to the players (whereas in an archetypal immersive game you act exclusively asyour character).Games like Fate, Savage Worlds, Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition, and Edge of the Empire give players poker chips which they may spend as a resource of narrative control. These briefly blur the line between player and GM, allowing a player to add a new story detail or skew the odds of a roll.

Unsurprisingly The player/character divide is more pronounced in detached play than in immersive play, and that greater divide is mediated by dice. Rather than a player's social savvy, the success of a negotiation will depend on the number of skill ranks a player has invested in Diplomacy, or whether or not they consider this conversation important enough to spend a poker chip. Rather than a detailed back-and-forth about flagstones, a player will locate a trap based on their Burglary skill.
Playing in the detached style keeps the game moving faster, which in turn can emphasize the broader plot rather than becoming immersed in the scene at hand. A detached perspective also invites players to ask a question you're unlikely to see in an immersive game: "would it be good for the story if my character failed here?"
Bringing it Together
Now that we have these concepts fleshed out in the abstract, how do we apply them?
Well, I have some homework for you. Think of your favorite game. Where does it sit on the immersed/detached scale? Where does it sit on the crunchy/smooth scale? Now pick a game that falls somewhere completely different -- you can change one variable or both. Get your group together, and give it an honest try. Report back here with your experiences.
Here are some examples to get you started:
CRUNCHY AND DETACHED: Pathfinder. Loads of options for races, classes, spells, and abilities, including many that require direct player attention to the mechanics (such as Power Attack, a very common feat, as mentioned above).
CRUNCHY: Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition. Like 3rd Edition/Pathfinder, this game still has plenty of mechanical heft behind its character creation. However, there's much less emphasis (at least judging from the basic set) on the sorts of feats and special abilities that break immersion.
CRUNCHY AND IMMERSIVE: GURPS. There's a lot of crunch here, to be sure, but there's no reason that the GM can't handle it all behind the curtain. Direct player involvement in the mechanics is rare.
DETACHED: Numenera. The game is smoother than you would expect from the size of the rulebook. The core action resolution mechanic demands that players engage in resource management.
NEUTRAL: Swords & Wizardry. This is one of the most well-respected retroclones. It's about as smooth as you can get, and about as immersive as you can get, while still keeping the Vancian magic system, which requires tracking a bunch of numbers level-by-level and doing resource management during play. Another option for this spot is Savage Worlds, a sort of GURPS-light with a few poker chips thrown in.
IMMERSIVE: Basic Role Playing. It's not smooth, but it's far less crunchy than the heavy hitters like Pathfinder or GURPS. If you wanted to literally have the GM handle all of the rolls behind their curtain, this would be a pretty easy system to do it in.
SMOOTH AND DETACHED: Fate. The heavy use of aspects allows Fate to be a robust universal system without much mechanical structure, but the poker chip economy is a crucial part of making this work, so play is unambiguously detached.
SMOOTH: Risus. This game is incredibly smooth, but I honestly have trouble assessing where it falls on the immersive/detached scale because it's so "goofy". I think you could really go either way with it.
SMOOTH AND IMMERSIVE: This one is the trickiest. There are loads of indie games, retroclones, and homebrews that try to hit the sweet spot here, but I have yet to be satisfied with any of them (which is why I'm building my own homebrew to put here). This is especially true if the card turns up in the eighth position of a Celtic Cross spread. Sometimes you have to go with your gut feeling and not depend on other people to tell you what to do. This is sometimes very difficult for those who are not by nature independent.
This card also could indicate that the prospect is having problems with another person and that they need to clear the air of any differences. Keeping your feelings to yourself is not a good thing and will only end up eating you alive from the inside.
In reverse key, this card indicates that you shouldn't waste time in arguments with others. Instead, you should focus your energies on things that are more important. Stick to your point of view and have patience that eventually others will come around and see your side of things.
This card could also indicated that you need to look at things as they really are and not through rose colored glasses. You need to be in control of your emotions and not be afraid to face the truth.
Finally, you can't let your imagination run wild. Don't look for demons where there are none. This card in reverse is what I call the "paranoia" strikes card. Many people think that there are conspiracies everywhere. This is simply not true.

The trial and appeal of Korean exorcist Luke Lee began with a dead body and ended with a victory for religious freedom.
The arrest of Korean immigrant Luke Lee in 2001 was headline-generating material. Pastor Lee, founder of the Mt. Roskill Lord of All's church was charged with manslaughter when a woman, Joanna Lee, died during an exorcism. As the trial unfolded a bizarre tale of daily exorcisms emerged, generating media analogies with the bile-spewing, head rotating rituals in The Exorcist.
If ever there was a case that called into question religious freedom, this was it. While the judge, Justice Paterson, announced that Lee was not on trial for his religious beliefs, outside of the court room Lee's repeated announcements that the deceased would rise from the dead compelled public comment and often amusement. Moreover, Joanna's consent to a demeaning and - as it turned out - lethal ritual challenged the Courts to decide whether they would respect her religious choice.
As a researcher of extreme religion and altered states I was fascinated by Lee's case - I had seen such behaviour and activities many times before but never with such tragic consequences. I was keen to interview him. A series of bureaucratic obstructions and University ethical considerations delayed me from getting in touch with Lee and it was not until 2005 that I finally made contact with him via email. At this stage Lee had ceased to believe that Joanna would rise from the dead, but continued to maintain his innocence.

It may be the way that they are written, the use of language, the style of the site design, the topic chosen for the blog, the name of the blog, or any one of a number of other, less definable things that attract me to follow what someone else is writing. In those wanderings through the depths of interstellar cyberspace I have found some real gems; some are rough diamonds and others are polished gems gleaming in the inky blackness of the blogosphere but they all have a certain quality about them that I find alluring or enticing so that I am filled with the joys of anticipation when I see the latest post on their blogs waiting for me to read in my inbox or as I open their blog to see a new title announcing another post of ethereal quality.
I am amazed at how much people share on the web; of themselves and their lives as they share their interests, eruditions and experiences in the blogosphere for our elucidation, education and entertainment. So I decided to share a list of my favorite eleven blogs with you. Why eleven? Why not! Anyway I couldn't stop at ten. Originally I wasn't going to list them in any sort of order but then I thought to myself- "Hang on a minute! Grow a pair and put your money where your mouth is mate!" mixing my metaphors in sheer defiance of the sacred gods of grammar in genuine bloogster style. So here they are- my top eleven favorite blogs (at this very minute) and a few words that may explain why I like them (but only may):

Glimpses and tales into the life of a 20 something midwestern girl, http://carynlevyonline.wordpress.com/ is a snappily written blog that is about just what the title says that it is. The feature that gets it onto the list is the wonders of the web Wednesday posts of links to a new slew of online curios and sideshows.
10. Curious Notions, http://linda.curious-notions.net/ is just a nice tidy, well written blog and Linda seems to be a switched on sassy girl who tells it like it is. She also just comes up with great topics and catchy titles.
9. Boing Boing, http://boingboing.net/ is here even though I really didn't want to include anything other than genuine enthusiast bloggers but Boing, Boing has so much crazy internet shit on it that it had to make the list.
8. a small dark light, http://asmalldarklight.wordpress.com/ even though this blog is a bit irregular it is always poetic and profound. I can say no more.
7. Life and Art working through the absurdity of life, http://gilliansblog.wordpress.com/ is exactly what blogs are about. This mix of domestic observation, artistic musings and serendipitous creativity is precisely what makes blogging so bloody great.
6. Stuff White People Like, http://stuffwhitepeoplelike.com/ is a new comer to my favorite list but it is just what the title says it is and being white I could hardly not bloody like it could I?
5. Sara Dobie's Blog, http://saradobie.wordpress.com/ is another blog that has that perfect mix of personal log that puts the log in blog. Sara pours her heart out about her life's adventure in one post and piles scorn on Snookie's book in the next. Just brilliant.
4. Ed Hurst- Do What's Right, http://jehurst.wordpress.com/author/jehurst/ don't let Ed's Christian mysticism put you off; he will preach the Hard Gospel Truth at you here but he will give you the Truth about the overlords that want to run the world too. And, if you are one of those geeks that feels the need to escape from the evil clutches of Microsoft then Ed's blogging on alternative OS and other nerdy stuff will help keep you off the radar too. Always a thought provoking read.
3. The Honest Courtesan, http://maggiemcneill.wordpress.com/ this is one savvy lady with her head really screwed on who isn't afraid to speak her mind. Enter at your own risk. I just love this site.
