The beginning of an amazing journey through the year, and the Wheel of Life!As we step back in time, we look to the Ancient Ways of our ancestors who walked the earth and learned its seasonal rhythms. According to the old ways, the year was marked by the solstices (the longest and shortest days) and the equinoxes (the 2 days each year where a perfect balance between day and night, dark and light was achieved). Fourth in the Ancient Ways Collection, "Litha", also called Midsummer and the Summer Solstice, marks a celebration of plenty, a fire festival- and the earth at its prime! This day occurs between June 20th and 23rd each year, and after this day, light begins to wane until the Winter Solstice (Yule), in December. Midsummer was also a time that was regarded as mystical- a time for faeries, magic and dreams. It's a time for merriment, joyous celebration of nature's bounty- the first taste of the fruits of labor, and of the love and passions shared between earth's inhabitants! The Sun Festival was a noisy celebration- marked by bonfires, dancing, singing and drumming into the wee hours of the morning. The month of June was also a traditional month for weddings- a custom that has lasted to this day. Litha is marked by the symbolic fire and light, as well as the sun, by summer flowers such as lilies, roses and lavender, by the sundials that mark the solstice, by faeries that roamed about more freely on Midsummer's Eve and strange things happened, and the mighty oak and the sword that symbolised masculine energy and divinity. The thematic focus of Litha is gratitude for the many gifts and blessings we have, and the open celebration of that bounty. In "Ancient Ways ~ Litha", you will find the vibrant, lively shades of red, green, maize yellow, golden tan, blue and white.
