Goetia Of Dr Rudd

Goetia Of Dr Rudd
The Goetia is the most famous grimoire after the Key of Solomon. This volume contains a transcription of a hitherto unpublished manuscript of the Lemegeton, which includes four whole Grimoires:

* Liber Malorum Spituum seu Goetia

* Theurgia-Goetia

* Ars Paulina (books 1 and 2)

* Ars Almadel

This was owned by Dr Thomas Rudd, a practicing scholar-magician of the early seventeenth century. There are many editions of the Goetia, of which the most definitive is that of Joseph Peterson, but here we are interested in how the Goetia was actually used by practicing magicians in the 16th and 17th century, before the knowledge of practical magic faded into obscurity.

To evoke the 72 demons listed here without the ability to bind them would be foolhardy indeed. It was well known in times past that invocation and ligatio, or binding, was a key part of evocation, but in the modern editions of the Goetia this key technique is expressed in just one word "Shemhamphorash" and its use is not explained.

This volume explains how the 72 angels of the "Shemhamphorash" are used to bind the spirits, and the correct procedure for safely invoking them using special dual seals incorporating those necessary controlling angel, whose name is also engraved on the breastplate and Brass Vessel.

This is a 448 page hardcover book

Bryce Canyon National Park

Bryce Canyon National Park
BRYCE CANYON NATIONAL PARK, UTAH

Bryce is known for Hoodoos, Antelope herds, Bristlecone pines and excellent stargazing. Ebenezer Bryce was a Mormon who settled in the mouth of the canyon in the 1870s. When asked about the canyon he reportedly said, 'It's a hell of a place to lose a cow.'

Like many of the great parks, the Union Pacific railroad built a huge rustic lodge here to stimulate rail travel before the property became a park in the early 20th century. During the Great Depression, the Civilian Conservation Corp jobs program developed many of the trails and other facilities that still exist in America's parks.

Bristlecone pines live on the rim of the 10,000 foot summit and are known to reach ages of 1600 years. Hoodoos are orange spires formed here in the desert by erosion from rain. The Paiute Indians said that they were 'legend people' who had been turned to stone by the trickster Coyote.

We drive the motorbike 20 miles up to the Sunset Point summit and walked the Bristlecone trail. The average visibility is 113 miles. The park boasts the best star-gazing conditions in the US. They claim you can see your shadow by the light from Venus. Unfortunately it was overcast in the evening.

Cultural Continuity

Cultural Continuity
People from other religions, and occasionally archaeologists, refer to contemporary Pagans as "neopagans". I personally find this condescending. I have outlined the reasons for this before, in a blogpost entitled "Stop calling us NeoPagans".

I think the reason "neopagan" bothers me so much is (1) the other terms that the prefix "neo"appears in; (2) the fact that no-one ever refers to Protestants and the like as "Neo-Christians"; (3) it implies a lack of authenticity - why can't people be Pagans (as long as we don't claim to be direct heirs of ancient pagans, because there are both similarities and differences); (4) it's usually said in a snidey way.

I am not saying that there is cultural continuity between contemporary Pagans and ancient "pagans" (who did not self-identify as pagan - the term was applied to them by the early Christians).

The only connection between contemporary Paganism and ancient polytheisms is that we honour the same deities. The philosophical basis of the Pagan revival is different - even in the case of reconstructionist Paganisms. Our philosophical basis is either reconnecting with Nature, or recovering the lost wisdom of the past. The philosophical basis of much of ancient polytheism was mainly propitiating the deities. Of course there must have been those who participated in the rituals out of love of the deities, and because they wanted to connect with the world-soul, but these were probably in the minority (as they sadly are today in most religions).

The rituals of ancient polytheisms, and the reasons behind them, are largely lost to us. What understanding of death did the Iron Age Celts have? We simply don't know, because they didn't write it down. Nor do we know with what rituals they disposed of their dead, even if we can see the results. Our knowledge of the Iron Age priesthood known as the druids comes mainly from the propagandist writings of Julius Caesar, as Ronald Hutton points out in his excellent book "The Druids". (Presumably also in "Blood and Mistletoe", but I haven't read that yet.)

Information about what the Saxon and Norse rituals were like is considerably better, and so Heathen reconstructionists have far more hope of producing something accurate.

Obviously there is also no unbroken line of initiatory descent from ancient polytheisms (unless you trace it through the Christian church, ironically enough). And the genetic link between contemporary Pagans and ancient pagans is shared by every other inhabitant of the British Isles.

So contemporary Pagans cannot claim exclusive jurisdiction over sacred sites or human remains, because everyone is the heir of the ancient past. But when someone wants to desecrate a sacred site (as when some Christians wanted to place a rock with Alpha and Omega carved on it in the middle of Maybury Henge), then we should have a voice alongside others who would want to prevent such a thing from happening.

The Quiet Time

The Quiet Time
I embrace been using the appellation "THE Pessimistic Degree" in original posts and negotiations it was time that I explained this articulation make better, and what the concepts are that I spend time with with this articulation. The Pessimistic Degree is a shift in the sequence of the Move smoothly of the Go out with, the rotary of one color to original. In my definition this articulation refers to the shift amongst SAMHAIN (October 31st/November 1st) until IMBOLC (February 1st/2nd). Happening this part of the appointment the claim is to desist from pretense any lashing work, or any druidic piece of work. Bestow are one reasons for pretense this:- * The land is goodbye dull itself - the earth energy, extremely the male earth energy, retreats indoors the rock bottom of the earth and is diligent for use * Vegetation and other dwell organisms and entities go indoors hibernation, and their transfer and energy is exceedingly diligent to be worked with * It is considerate for the energy worker to stock up their own species energy by having a zealous shift to change around and repair * Profundity can be extracted from the knowledge acquired surplus the course of the effective appointment by ill at ease the slant on that work ready substance, consolidation and re-visiting the work that has been done throughout the appointment Shhh! It's the Pessimistic Degree. Putting together all these reasons to suffer a break from working in the land it can be seen that give to are tremendous assistance to "goodbye dull" surplus this shift. Separation dull does not avoid goodbye out indoors the land, immobile. Sardonically, give to are frequently a range of bigger opportunities for taking time off from your job taking part in the Yule shift, and this appointment I was completely directed to go out to a sacred site for the Unfeeling Solstice. I would, of course, encourage you to get out indoors the spiteful, the blizzard, the winter commotion, and convey how it changes and how it feels in those vocabulary. This actually makes the return of the energies in Recoil so future bigger exciting! Bestow is a down sharpness to taking a break for such a yearning shift. Your rituals and routines become flawed - but I accord see this as an luck to review them in Recoil. Unlike free can be Fully Frustration - looking out at the bad weather and wishing you were out in the land working - but really there's zero to be done, and zero to work with at this time of appointment at any rate - so enjoy out! Violate. Get moderation. Do other stuff. If you prerequisite work, do everything different! This appointment I embrace done a Chattels Go beyond taking part in The Pessimistic Degree, for turn of phrase. This recycled right my own energies to do, and so it was picture perfect for me. Excluding, on the whole, I treatment this time sparkly, words, resolving what happened in the unusual appointment, and preparing for the then year's work. I embrace previously discussed what I plan to do for Imbolc, and tersely I strength of mind be discussing how I strength of mind be in front of the Recoil Equinox. The debate starts in The Pessimistic Degree with tarot readings, substance, learning, reading, words and restoring health and whiz. Assert the silence!

Jinx

Jinx
Some people might put this name down for being "fake" or devoid of history. Before looking into this name I might have said the same thing (well, not the "fake" part, I don't know how a name can be "fake"). But what I found about this name was quite surprising.

Jinx seems like it would be perfect for Neo-Pagan parents. It is, after all, Latin for "spell." Or so some sources say. Others say that the name is derived from Iynx, the name of a nymph from Greek mythology. There are several conflicting stories regarding Iynx. She might be the daughter of Echo and Pan, or of Peitho and Pan. Iynx was a sorceress who invented a love charm that she named after herself. It consisted of a spinning wheel with a wryneck bird attached. Some stories say that she used this charm to make Zeus fall in love with her. But in the more popular versions, she used the charm to make Zeus fall in love with Io, who he raped. Hera was not amused, and transformed Iynx into a wryneck bird herself.

In another story, Iynx was one of the nine daughters of Pierus. The nine sisters entered a musical contest with the Muses. When they lost, they were all transformed into birds, Iynx turning into the wryneck bird.

What the heck is a wryneck bird? It's a type of woodpecker found in Africa and Eurasia that used to be quite common in Greece, and was very important to them spiritually. The bird is remarkable due to it's ability to turn it's head around 180 degrees, which is how it got it's English name. When it feels threatened it engages in odd, snakelike behavior, elongating it's neck and twisting it around while hissing. It was that bizarre ability that caught the attention of the Ancient Greeks. They occasionally used this bird for magic and divination, and they associated it with passionate, relentless love. According to legend, Aphrodite gave this bird to Jason, who then used it to excite the passion of Medea. The genus name of the wryneck bird is, you guessed it, Jinx.

The earliest known use of the word jinx that described something other than the bird was used in the context of baseball, of all things. It appeared in the short story "The Jinx" in 1910, and it was described as something that brought bad luck to ball players. After that, the meaning evolved into a type of curse that brought minor misfortune. It could also refer to talking about the future with too much confidence. Testing the Fates results in bad luck. It's original meaning seems to be forgotten even by Neo-Pagans, they also use the word to describe a curse or a charm.

Jinx is a common name, at least in the comic book world. Jinx is a supervillainess in Teen Titans, a bounty hunter in the graphic novel of the same name, and a martial artist in the G.I. Joe world. Giacinta "Jinx" Johnson was the Bond girl in Die Another Day, and was portrayed by actress Halle Berry. If you're looking for real-life namesakes, there is Jinx Dawson, who was the vocalist for the American rock band Coven. Coven is well known for it's biggest hit "One Tin Soldier," and for inventing the sign of the horns that's used in rock culture. There is also the Spanish/Chilean model-turned-actress Jinx Falkenburg (born Eugenia Lincoln Falkenburg, nicknamed "Jinx" by her mother).

Knowing all of that, I now think the name is awesome. But of course, not everyone is a name nerd and not everyone is going to get it. There are some that would think that this name is too...vampish for a child. Or too unlucky. Which might mean that you would have to explain it a lot. But if you're willing to accept those challenges, it's a cool name. With loads more history than people think. Damn, did I get schooled.
