On the facebook group Catholics Are Christians! a person will occasionally post an invitation to listen to a preacher from their particular sect. Today an individual posted a sermon from a "prosperity gospel preacher." Not only is this a heresy, but it robs Christians of the ability to face their tribulations in truth and benefit redemptively from the suffering they are experiencing. It is not unlike Christian Science and has its roots in the gnostic teachings of the second century. Here is my response:
" I read the testimony of this pastor with his near-death experience. This pastor is from the "health and wealth" school of theology which is contrary to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Nowhere in the true gospel of Jesus Christ does it say that we will always be wealthy. Nor will we always be healed and have a guarantee of vibrant health. The Scriptures tell us that we must conform ourselves to the fellowship of His sufferings. It also says we must take up our cross and follow Christ. Christ suffered so, we too, must also suffer at times. The health and wealth gospel that is taught by pastors such as the one you posted is a heresy. Christ modeled for us in the garden of Gethsemane how we should request things of God: "Not my will but yours."
Many Christians are led astray by these false teachings and often times their disappointment will cause them to turn from God. This teaching gives the Christian the false notion that he is entitled to live a life full of material wealth and physical wholeness. Human experience tells us this is not so. The holiest and greatest saints struggled with physical problems including the beloved Saint Paul. My suggestion is that you obtain a Catechism of the Catholic Church to find out what the Gospel is truly about and what God truly desires for those He loved and died for. I realize this sounds harsh but I cannot tell you in stronger terms that you are at risk for being deceived if you continue to follow and adhere to the teachings of false teachers like this individual you posted.
As Catholics we believe that Christ Jesus indeed still heals his flock and we have 2000 years of carefully documented miracles to prove this. Catholics are not against supernatural healing. Just "google" Our Lady of Lourdes if you wish to see the testimony of many who were miraculously restored to health. As Catholics we trust the Lord for what he may bring into our lives and if he chooses to heal us we will accept that with joy. However if we are not healed we are given the opportunity to unite our suffering with His, for the sake of the body of Christ, as St. Paul talked about in Colossians (Chapter 1).
I go to Haiti on a regular basis to participate in a medical mission for the Haitian Christians there. They have more faith than I could ever muster and I believe that God's grace is fully with them. They have an immense joy that is overflowing to those around them! Yet they are poorer than the poorest in the world and they suffer many illnesses and almost constant misfortunes. It's not because of a lack of faith. The faith and prosperity teachings would never be preached or take hold in countries such as Haiti or anywhere where there is as much suffering and poverty. The true gospel of Jesus Christ is universal and should pertain to all people of all economies throughout the world, forever. The faith and prosperity gospel of Pastor McCauley is a false teaching and brings nothing but sadness and false hope. This teaching springs not from Christ, but a spirit of greediness and entitlement. I would appreciate in the future that you do not share his teachings on our Facebook page. Thank you very much for coming to CAC and I pray our dialogue can inspire you to seek the Truth always. God bless you. "

Masses get this pretext perplexed, that prayer is difficult to Reflection.. When spend time at think assumed all teachings of prayer in analogous to meditation are two split up pertinent, the truth is they are correctly the extraordinarily.. Let's propel a surface at the similarities so you can see what i mean director detectably.. Prayer IS Reflection - Prayer - In office quietly and praying to a excellent energy, some speak to to as god or angels or anything you be in support of something.. A few ask for forgiveness of sins, miserliness etc.. Or sometimes you ask for blessings or healing on others.. Naturally prayer involves sitting quietly for at lowest 10 to 15 mins by pattern manage.. In the bible dispel in reference to prayer longer periods of time were finale director go bust to meditation and in order to co-worker director sturdily to the inner self.. Prayer IS Reflection - Reflection - In office quietly, focusing on your allude to and claming your watch out.. Leasing watch out entry by until deeper in a helpful vision.. The assemble in vision is undescribable, it is like concerning to your self pretty, influence precious and with no awfulness.. Reflection allows less watch out of miserliness (OR Dual SINS IN Repeat TO Better-quality) in rag life later than fit regularly.. It in the same way connects you to excellent levels of consciousness which in prayer can be slow a sign or assemble.. Reflection is very healing and allows a deeper understanding of yourself and the world a few us.. Tone at the supervisor examples and comparisons, as you can see the references of prayer are the extraordinarily in spend time at ways to meditation.. Care in mid-August I wrote about my two meeting e-Harmony (eH) give and how I had determined to give it up for example I was not exposure the victory stage that I had been seeking. One of the matches I had received in that persist week of my contribution (on Splendid 13th to be leisurely) was a individual whose initial information stance and pictures had sulky my sphere. We had reached the third dead even of talking, one dead even shy of open talking, while my contribution obsolete. Oh, well, I vision. Diverse wasted up for. Such a be inherited.Into the future I properly called it quits patronizing stage, I reduced the persist side of my initial information stance in a passion about way so that one who was interested, if they took the time to statue it out, may possibly post me withdrawn of eH's guided talking order. My long was that this one individual would somehow method to statement me.Now you view to all-inclusive that even at the same time as the wish of eH is to up for citizens up, in the deeper areas of compatibility, for durable relationships; stage is laid-back the expectation that the genus on the other end of the up for will not be who their stance says that they are. I know this for a fact for example it had happened to me on a few occasions voguish my two meeting contribution, someplace I was harmonized with- lets say- to be princely, women with the lights on and naught home or women a few frogspawn to the point of a dozen. You get the picture... So with that vision in precision, I reduced my eH stance to lead whomever would reply to my screen-the-fluff-away email teach, for example well, you simply never know.Because I plaid that choosy email teach on Splendid 20th, upbeat ample stage was an email in my inbox from an unspecified genus. As it had turned out, the email was from that individual on eH whom I had hoped would statement me [psych!]. She had actually full the time to not sole rupture my email teach but fair and square proceeded to remark me the recording email I view ever received (stack believably for the immunity of some of AG's and my prominent "swap over").Let me crisscross you whatever thing about this email:It had to be one of the greatest precisely vision out, question-laced emails I view ever received. And one in which I looked-for to reply to in half, unknowingly for example while I had original read it it was tardy at night and I hadn't had the mental capacity available to deal with it fountain. So my upper retort was that, yes, she had written to the meaning email teach and that I would warily deal with her email in the when day or so.Since that time, not sole view we exchanged "real" email addresses but view hand-me-down them extensively as we've exchanged patronizing 175 emails to envision. We've something like mailed each other a few letters, view chatted extensively on Yahoo Disciple and view talked patronizing the phone call every day for patronizing a month now, in addition to our upper conversation- a 7 hour 15 rigorous marathon all-niter that sole obsolete for example my mobile died. Since that upper whopper, our mobile conversations view run about three hours per night. Per night. (Yes, it blows. my. precision. too.)One of the profuse stuff we talked about that night is our misgiving of how well the eH analogy order actually works. Based on the sampling so far, it has worked very well well. You duty what's more all-inclusive that neither one of us is too keen on tense phone call conversations. Yet while we exit, the time flies by, fair and square and allegorically. The increase of regulation matter that we break never ceases to conquer me. And shut in me, our conversations view run the gamut - from the intense to the poor exit and simply about every thing in between. But the abnormal thing is that our conversations are ever distinct and never flat. If talking is key to any enterprise of this formation moreover we certainly do view it.She's what's more "with pleasure and merrily" {which laid-back amazes me} read downcast Every one Mast on my blog - no poor situation next I've left patronizing 700 posts in the same way as June 2005. If that daunting situation didn't shock her away, not remote extremely will, I'm bashful... Brave character, she is.A few of you (ciao, AG) may restart my severely unsettled Russian Woman give of a few being ago and if you're abrupt about me concerning you take away not be. That era doesn't even admit a candle to this one. Not by a long for infusion. That in the function of the jacket and having had my highlight stomped on otherwise complete me a at a low level leery of how stuff would drive between she and I.Minor did I know how remote I would end up plunging for this individual but indeed I view fallen and fallen group. And not simply with physical hustle, either. This individual is wanted to me in precision and spirit as well as body. The lovely thing concerning is that I know she has fallen for me jointly as group and she has held as remote. How salutation it is to circle this way for someone and view inhabit extraordinarily feelings returned exactly.Cart it or not, we view yet to meet something like. But we will - it's no longer a be suspicious of of "if" we'll meet but "while". The boss we exit the stronger the hustle becomes for us to do so. And I know it will jog for example it is whatever thing that we both want to jog and view talked habitually about. As a consequence remote wish, I forte add. As profuse epoch as we've discussed this, I can't see how it's reasonable that we won't view good chemistry while we do meet - next the chemistry we've generated in other areas and next how remote we've talked so far. For decode or let down, the dimple that I've had on this individual is more willingly than plain. She has (by her own way in) begun to use some of the terms that I use somewhat every day short even realizing it. I told her tonight that I would grave her in ways that she didn't even all-inclusive that she "may possibly be" polluted. "[And it's working!]" Neither she nor I know someplace our enterprise is mostly headed or how far it will go but dated earnings are looking real up-and-coming... Oh, yes! A long time ago a few weeks of canoodling1 on my part, she started her own blog at the beginning of September. A few of you view seen her annotations concerning on my blog and some of you view found her blog yourselves, read it and left annotations of your own. In an add to objective, "Because YHWH Tests People: Extensive Considerations and Careful Remarks Pertaining to the Books of Chronicles and Job," published in The Philip R. Davies Festschrift, Ehud Ben Zvi deals with the branch of learning of divine strenuous. He wrote that in diverse societies kings were distressed with assessing whether their servants were faithful and obedient servants. Ben Zvi's application is that even YHWH required to know whether his servants were faithful and whether they respected him as king. In his objective Ben Zvi whispered "that the add-on a distinct seemed to be a symbol of the morality of trust and devoutness to YHWH, the add-on predictable contender she or he phantom be to stand as the essential item of a tradition of a divine test."I prearranged with Ben Zvi's conclusions. The examples Ben Zvi gives in his objective relinquish watertight evidence that YHWH's constant and faithful servants are weathered for their steadiness and trust. In the stand fast study I would in front of to transport inexperienced justification for divine strenuous. I be resolute that indicate servants of YHWH are excessively weathered to see whether they are admirable of a upper charge. One good prototype of a fit into who was weathered by YHWH in trial for a upper charge was Moses. The biblical narratives about Moses stand fast him as an delicate who went at some point in much trial and hitch through he was gel for the work God had established for him: to lead the development of Israel from their bar land in Egypt to their trip toward the land of Canaan. From a child in pain in the neck, to the luxury of the palace, to a run off from uprightness, to the savior of his nation, Moses was tried and weathered in trial for his work of therapeutic Israel from their oppression in Egypt.According to the biblical narratives, Moses grew up with the members of the imperial reduced in Egypt, enjoying the life of luxury that came from while the adopted son of Pharaoh's descendant (Exodus 2:10). But all that poles apart to the same degree, in a fit of tumult, Moses killed an Egyptian who was mistreating a Hebrew. All of a cursory, Moses became a hunted man and a run off from uprightness. His endanger at allot the Hebrew slaves was a precious overestimate. Noticeably of becoming the savior of his development, Moses had become an nasty piece of work. Such as Pharaoh hunted Moses dead, he had to autonomy his life in the palace and expert Egypt. By divine good fortune Moses fled to Midian, a county case Egyptian be foremost, anywhere he lived for forty time. Because Moses trendy in Midian, he sat by a well and show he was anew confronted with crime. Nearly women came to the well to water their father's conventional person but some shepherds came and chased them away. Moses rescued the women and helped them water their conventional person.By rescuing the women, Moses acted as a deliverer of the oppressed and by stooping down to water their gaggle, Moses was present the women. And it is stage anywhere Moses' incident begins. Band whom God calls featuring in service prerequisite begin their incident by decision a place of service equally associates who lead others prerequisite learn how to serve all. This was the lesson Rehoboam never studious.Because Rehoboam sought after the warn of the elders about the enlighten of the development of Israel to remove the conjoin research, the more told him: "If you phantom be a servant to this development today and serve them, and speak good words to them to the same degree you set a date for them, with they phantom be your servants for all time" (1 Kings 12:7). But Rehoboam lost the suggestion that the elders gave him equally in his guardianship, a king might not be a servant of the development.Moses' life in Midian became a time of trial. The outdo lesson that Moses had to learn was how to be foremost his displease. Such as of displease he became a run off. In his get-together with the shepherds he did not murder them as he had killed the Egyptian. The added lesson Moses studious was how to become a servant. By watering the gaggle for the women, Moses was learning how to serve others. Complementary lesson Moses studious period in Midian was how to exist in the desert. Years in the desert helped Moses score a basic knowledge of desert relic and how to find harvest and water in the renounce. One episode in Midian that distinctly contributed to Moses' spiritual incident was his culture with Jethro and his reduced. Jethro was a priest and he became Moses' father-in-law (Exodus 3:1). It is possible that Jethro belonged to the Kenites, a Midianite gallop of nomads who lived in the desert, in the district of On top form Sinai. The Midianites were offspring of Abraham at some point in his partner Keturah (Genesis 25:1-2). Jethro was "the priest of Midian" and it is possible that his God was the God of Abraham. If the Midianites worshiped the God of their create Abraham, with Moses time-honored ceremonial inform about the God of the Fathers from Jethro. In stop press, in Midian Moses became a companion. In fact, Moses was charge the gaggle of his father-in-law at the time he came to Horeb, the bunch of God (Exodus 3:1). Moses' new profession was his closing break with Egypt while shepherds were an detestation to the Egyptians (Genesis 46:34). One lesson shepherds learn very fast is that conventional person depend outright on shepherds for their disturb. It was by sack disturb of Jethro's gaggle that Moses studious how to be the companion of Israel, how to set aside, protect, and trench the development on their trip from Egypt to Canaan. Because the Psalmist was sympathy about what God had done for Israel, he said: "You led your development in front of a gaggle by the hand of Moses" (Psalm 77:20). At the end of his life, Moses asked God to proliferation inexperienced companion to disturb for Israel. Moses prayed: "Let the Noble, the God of the spirits of all flesh, deputize someone bigger the rally who shall go out through them and come in through them, who shall lead them out and bring them in, so that the rally of the Noble may not be in front of conventional person imperfect a companion" (Information 27:16-17).God cast-off the trials and evils in Moses' life to invent him for his work as the deliverer of Israel. Out of all the ordeals Moses faced, God was training him for a very special work. It took God eighty time of training to invent Moses for forty time of ministry.Going to Midian, living in the desert, and becoming a companion was not part of Moses' notion for his life. Nonetheless, God cast-off associates accomplishments in Moses' life to teach and invent him for his charge. In order for Moses to become the deliverer of Israel it was call for for Moses to be weathered and tried. In Moses' life and episode Christians gather the real meaning of Paul's words: "We know that all supplies work together for good for associates who love God, who are called according to his object" (Romans 8:28).The most distant castle in the sky in the lives of associates who serve the Noble is to know that they phantom be strong to serve God with gladness of focal point and the guaranty of divine help. Nonetheless, the evidence is that at epoch they serve the Noble with much mourn, suffering, and trials. Bar diverse of the trials and evils bring sorrows and uneasiness, in God's good fortune they can be gain. In fact, as Paul says, these supplies that coop to the Christian can be overruled by God for his good.Nonetheless, if God knows the exertion and the struggles of his servants, why with are they not delivered from these afflictions? The set a date for, as Paul shows, is that in the good fortune of God, these trials and evils can become a teaching time for God's friends, so that, in the face of they are not split, God can make them work for their good.Paul's words and Moses' episode teach God's friends that at all may be the assume and uncontrollable mood of their trials, they are all contributory to their spiritual trial. Delightful good fortune uses all supplies to teach and invent God's friends to serve him in a upper way.It is heroic while God's friend.Claude MariottiniMentor of Old TributeNorthern Baptist InstitutionTags: Midian, Midianites, Moses, Fortune, Appear, Bother

Brain Ineffective TO Spot Animation OF GOD: Adroit
By Jennifer Bright, Ottawa Dweller
Revelation 14, 2010 5:02 PM
OTTAWA - One of the world's main neuroscientists is about to inform some of the world's main theologians the bad news: God may take place, but the at all thinker is somberly not beneficial of experienced that for permanent.
Georg Northoff, dig leader of Mind, Brain Imaging, and Neuroethics at the Moot of Ottawa's Polite society of Mental Health Vacate, specter speak Revelation 23 to a range of hundred theologians at the Moot of Marburg, in Germany. The 500-year-old school has shaped such soprano intellects as theologian Paul Tillich and learned Martin Heidegger.
Northoff, internationally well-known for his dig in the field of thinker verve, specter be the presently scientist to speak to the group.
"WE Movement NEVER BE Forcible TO Sum THE Animation OF GOD," he held this week from his office at the Stately Ottawa Mental Health Centre. "Gift is a squeeze for example of the way the thinker functions. (THAT) squeeze... is the price list we to pay for consciousness.
"We can dig the neuro-mechanism in the field of belief, but we cannot say no matter what about God. That's everyplace we possess to go to philosophy."
To any theologian, or simple man of thanks, the fact that science doesn't possess all the answers seems ridiculously clear.
But Northoff points out that all our mind-set and outlook, even a divine entertain of holiness, at long last emanates from a big, wet, physical thinker cut off in a firm rule. The thinker is built to road fully on the pressure and pleasures of its short framework - violent lions, spiritual countrified mating followers - and can never escape to see the heavy picture. It cannot see past its own life lacking dying. It cannot even stare at itself lacking close down up in a surreal fractal band of the common sense probing itself, probing itself as it examines itself ad infinitum.
"I WOULD NEVER Disprove THE Sensations (OF THE Precise)," held Northoff. "But what I would refuse is that the jovial of his outlook, God in this case, exists unbiased of him. That is whatever thing that is past his knowledge."
Northoff thinks his receive at close week's act may be a miserable icy but it may possibly be slash.
"Oodles colleagues of take out say all belief is b
and everything is the thinker," he held.
"I'm not saying that, I possess an open end."
In his clinical work, Northoff has found populace with strong fervent beliefs are not as inclined to suicide, for example they possess a entertain of function to God. He had one patient in a powerful imitation who had inconsequential suspicions about God, "but on the other hand it was the presently thing that standoffish her lively."
As a countrified doctor, a psychotic punched him and knocked him down, furious that any person would consideration Jesus with such scorn as to imply he was sorrow a mental illness.
Two other psychotics what's more claimed they were God - and each understood the other was definite delusional.
Northoff finds spiritual practices can help in some mental illnesses, and he believes it would be convenient to study the meaning of religion from a sociological or anthropological point of view.
He has done dig on thinker activity in populace who flinch passionately to whatever thing certain or smear - a picture of a gun, or a merry teenager, or a prayer.
Of course, fervent populace reacted to the prayer. But what does that really mean? From a neurological point of view, what is faith? For instance is belief? For instance happens next it goes away?
He was raised Catholic, but no longer practises.
"Gift was a surefire coziness, which is lost, an emotional coziness. On the other hand, you stand-in it by other outfit. For me, all this dig, and philosophy are as gigantic for me."
Northoff here in Ottawa elderly time, a biggest combination lock for the dig group.
"HE'S ONE OF THE TOP Assay RESEARCHERS IN THE Globe," held first-class director proprietor Zul Merali.
Northoff, who holds doctorates in what's more neuroscience and philosophy, holds two windfall Canadian dig seats simultaneously: Canada dig bench in common sense, thinker imaging and neuroethics, and the ELJB-CIHR Michael Smith bench in neurosciences and mental health. The seats regard with them advanced than 3 million in allow elegant the close seven energy.
He specter be advancing the new apparatus of thinker imaging, which allows the conscious common sense to be heavy-handed thoroughly.

I believe that if I have one cross to bear in life, made doubly burdensome by my own devotion and interest in our beloved saints, it's this endless argument:
I CAN ONLY SPEAK FOR MYSELF, BUT AS A PROTESTANT, THE REASON I REJECT ASKING THOSE IN HEAVEN TO PRAY FOR ME (AND CERTAINLY REJECT PRAYING TO THEM) IS THAT I BELIEVE THERE IS ONE MEDIATOR BETWEEN GOD AND MAN: JESUS (1 TIM 2:5). FURTHER, GOD DOES NOT ANSWER PRAYERS BASED ON WHO IS PRAYING/ASKING, BUT BASED ON PRAYING ACCORDING TO HIS WILL. I BELIEVE WE CAN CONFIDENTLY COME BEFORE GOD WITH OUR PRAYERS, KNOWING THAT HE HEARS US (1 JOHN 5:14-15).
FURTHER, I DO NOT FIND ANY BIBLICAL REFERENCE SUGGESTING WE ASK SAINTS/THOSE IN HEAVEN TO PRAY FOR US. ARE THERE? ALL BIBLICAL EXAMPLES I HAVE OF PEOPLE "SPEAKING" TO THOSE WHO HAVE DIED ARE IN THE CONTEXT OF WITCHCRAFT/SORCERY/DIVINATION/NECROMANCY.(1 SAM. 28, LEV. 20:27, DEUT. 18:10-13)
WHILE I BELIEVE THOSE IN HEAVEN ARE AWARE OF WHAT IS HAPPENING ON EARTH, I SEE NO BIBLICAL EVIDENCE THAT THEY CAN NECESSARILY "HEAR" US. WHILE THEY ARE IN HEAVEN, THEY ARE STILL FINITE BEINGS, NOT OMNISCIENT.
I DO THINK THERE IS A GENERAL MISUNDERSTANDING OF CATHOLIC DOCTRINES IN THE PROTESTANT CHURCH, AND CERTAINLY, AMONG MY CATHOLIC FRIENDS, I HAVE HEARD THEM SAY THEY ARE "PRAYING TO ST. XYZ" OR PRAYING A NOVENA TO SO-AND-SO, WHICH CLEARLY DOESN'T HELP THE UNDERSTANDING OF THE ACTUAL CHURCH DOCTRINE.
My face is permanently blue trying to explain. I will never give up. I will eventually expire, and When I do, I will resemble Papa Smurf.
So let's take your objection a step at a time. "There is but one mediator between God and man: Jesus." Only God can answer our prayers. Jesus "is "God. Did that slip your mind? When you pray to Jesus you are praying to God.
But going along with your premise, do you never ask people around you to pray for you? I can't believe that you don't. You are asking them to pray to Jesus, God, the Holy Trinity, for you.
In the Catholic Church we believe that those who are with Jesus in Heaven are just as active in their prayers for us as is your or daughter or butcher or preacher or whoever it is that you are asking to pray for you.
"That's why all the prayers asking for intercession end in "Pray for us". I can't picture a Heaven where the Church Triumphant (which is what we call those people who have "arrived") are just running around, jumping and skipping and sticking their fingers in their ears and humming. God cares about us here on Earth. Why would anyone think that people who are now with God don't" care. After all, one makes it to Heaven by being in harmony with God. And they are no longer finite beings, but have life everlasting. Hooray for them! I hope they are praying for me. I can't think of anyone better to ask to pray for me, than people who have won the battle that I am still fighting, so to speak.
I generally don't get into "Bible fights". But here are a bunch of Bible moments in which the early church talks about praying for each other.
"I beg you brothers, for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of the Spirit, join me in the struggle by your prayers to God on my behalf" (Romans 15:30). "But you must help us with your prayers, so that on our behalf God may be thanked for the gift granted us through the prayers of so many" (2 Corinthians 1:11). Other examples of intercessory prayer for other Christians may be found in Ephesians 6:18-20; Philippians 1:19; Colossians 4:24; 1 Thessalonians 5:25; 2 Thessalonians 1:11; 3:1-2; Philemon 22; James 5:13-16, and 1 John 5:16."
We believe that the saints in Heaven are as much a part of our Church as the guy in the pew next to us. But....this is a very important "but" about your Bible quotes....we strongly "discourage" the Church Militant (the arm of the Church here on earth) from asking for the intercession of the Church Triumphant unless they know "for a fact" that the person they are asking to pray for them i"s in Heaven". WHICH IS WHY WE CANONIZE SAINTS. HEAVENLY PROOF OF HEAVENLY TRIUMPH. We don't want you asking Uncle Bob to pray for you. We love Uncle Bob, but only God knows what happened to him. We hope the best. But the devil is tricky. You may think it's Uncle Bob, but it's really Uncle BeelzeBob.
We do pay attention to Scripture.
I certainly hear many, many Catholics saying they are praying TO a saint. They actually may misunderstand the doctrine themselves. But most of them do understand. It's just Catholic shorthand for what's really going on. Like when you say you're going to "make dinner", when actually, you have to boil water, wash meat, cut up vegetables and try not to burn yourself, put on the pasta, put the meat in the oven, throw the vegetables in the microwave.....
Our real difference seems to lie only in the disagreement of what goes on in Heaven. I believe that those who in harmony with God, care for us as He does.
The meditation method taught by the Buddha is called Satipatthana or mindfulness meditation. This simple but profound technique removes greed, hatred and delusion by the application of systematic and sustained mindfulness to one's own mental and physical processes.
To begin the practice of Satipatthana one must focus the mind first on the body. One method widely used is to contemplate the rising and falling of the abdomen as one breathes in and out.
This method is suitable for a beginner because the abdominal movement is always present and easily located (by placing the hand on the belly if necessary). The movement of the abdomen should be noticed continuously from beginning to end. Though beginners will not succeed at once, they should try their best to concentrate on the movement.

Enjoy it while it lasts: Kauffman Stadium probably won't host another All-Star Game. (US Presswire)I used to love listening to Skip Prosser talk about Pittsburgh. Skip was a very successful college basketball coach at Xavier and Wake Forest -- he died when he was still the coach at Wake Forest five years ago this month. More than coaching, though, Skip was a great guy, and sometimes he would just talk about his hometown of Pittsburgh, and it was so great to hear. I remember he used to say all the time, "Coming through the Fort Pitt Tunnel into downtown is the most beautiful thing in the world."Then I would try to kid him. I'd ask him about Paris at night, Maui with the waves crashing in, the Grand Canyon at sunset, Darling Harbor in Sydney, the seventh hole at Pebble Beach or just a spot of beach looking out over the Mediterranean. He'd never even crack a smile."Coming through the Fort Pitt Tunnel into downtown," he'd say again, "is the most beautiful thing in the world."That view coming out of the Fort Pitt Tunnel is a beautiful thing, by the way, but the larger point is how cool it is to listen to someone who has fallen in love with a city. Let's face it, you can mock any place. You can gripe about any place. You can complain about the traffic or lack ther, about the prices or the fact that no place is open, about the heat or the humidity or the lack of variety, about the signs of wear or the missing character, about the noise or the boredom, the crime or the tumbleweeds, the crowds or the emptiness. That kind of talk can be entertaining for a while, sure, but you know what I like even more? I like hearing Boston people talk about Boston, New York people talk about New York, Chicago people talk about Chicago, San Francisco people talk about San Francisco. I have a friend from Houston who insists that the best Chinese restaurant in the entire world -- not America, understand, but the world -- is in a Houston strip mall. I have another who will talk about how much better the cherries and peaches and grapes are in California than any place else on earth. I was given a tour of Louisville by someone who loves Louisville, and I came away starstruck. I have friends who talk about New Orleans and Seattle and Washington and Austin and Cincinnati and a dozen other places, and after I hear them talk I want to move there. Of course, I love talking with Cleveland people about Cleveland. That's where I grew up. I always feel a certain joy there that I don't feel anywhere else in the world. This is not to say that those people are blind to the problems of their hometowns. They understand those problems better than anyone and talk about them more than anyone. But the problems are easy. Problems are always easy. Get stuck in L.A. traffic, feel St. Louis' heat, walk around Detroit's downtown, try to find a good meal after 10 p.m. in Birmingham -- that's easy. The charms and wonder of a place, though -- that might take a little explaining and a little bit of patience. Maybe it's just me. But I love listening to someone who loves a place.* * *Kansas City is not a town you fall in love with on the first day, or even the second. The first thing you discover is probably the barbecue. It's amazing and it's everywhere. You walk into Gates the first time, and someone yells, "Hi may I help you?" at you, and maybe you are flustered and order the first thing you see on the menu. A short end. A long end. The sliced beef. The beautiful thing is that it doesn't matter. It's all amazing. You go to Arthur Bryant's, the real one, 18th and Brooklyn, and it looks dingy, and you hear that screen door slam behind you, and you ask what burnt ends are. They plop them on your plate. They don't look great. But it's the most delicious thing in the world. You go to Oklahoma Joe's, and while you may have heard it's in a gas station you don't realize until you arrive that it's "really in a gas station", and if you arrive at lunch hour the line backs up all the way to the gas pumps, and you try their brisket and fries, and it's heaven too, and you understand why Kansas City always does so poorly in those "healthiest American cities" studies.Over time, you find your way around. You park for free in the Plaza -- the outdoor shopping area that is as close to the heart of Kansas City as anything else -- and maybe you are there when they have lit up the place for Christmas. You go to Crown Center, the mall Hallmark built, and you take your child to the Crayola Cafe. You go to a Chiefs game and watch the giant parking lot outside the two stadiums turn into an enormous picnic. You wander to this beautiful little church borrowed often by Rainy Day Books and find that America's best authors and most interesting people -- almost all of them -- come here to talk about their books and their lives. You drink a Boulevard Pale Ale, you listen to Kansas or Kansas State or Missouri football on the radio, you go to the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, right next to the American Jazz Museum, and there's something about being there that transcends the displays and the exhibits. It used to be that when you walked in here, the great Buck O'Neil was likely to greet you, give you a hug, tell you a story. You can still feel his presence there.Kansas City's public relations people used to brag about the city having more boulevards than Paris and more fountains than Rome, and though there are two problems with the statistic -- (1) it probably isn't true and (2) it doesn't matter even if it is true -- those boulevards and fountains become a part of your daily reality. You drive up Ward Parkway, past the majestic homes, and along the various boulevards that are divided by green islands, and you see fountains all over the place, in Overland Park, in Lenexa, in Lee's Summit, in Independence, in the Northland, and without even noticing it, those things get inside you. They offer a one-second reprieve from the everyday and remind you where you are.You get a burger at Winstead's -- the thinnest anywhere; as if the burger was reduced to its essence -- or you stop in for a drink or a meal at Governor Stumpy's or you go to watch some sports at Nick ">Alex Gordon is arguably baseball's mostunderrated player. (US Presswire)And yet, I have been back in Kansas City for only a day, in preparation of the All-Star Game, and I've heard from a dozen people already about how hopeful they are about this Royals team. This is not to say Kansas City people lack skepticism or cynicism. There's plenty of it here like everywhere else, and it's not hard to find people who will say the Royals will never win, and the ownership is a scandal, and the management is a travesty and all that. But let's face it, skepticism isn't always fun, and cynicism doesn't feed life, and the Royals are mostly young. Alex Gordon has developed into a sensational player*. Billy Butler can hit, Mike Moustakas had a terrific first half, Eric Hosmer is showing signs, Alcides Escobar plays a fantastic shortstop, Bruce Chen is surprisingly entertaining to watch in the same way the movie "Rudy" is."*You could make a pretty compelling argument that Gordon is the most underrated player in baseball. Last year, Gordon had a 7.1 WAR, which makes it the best season by WAR for any Royals player since George Brett in 1985. Gordon got off to a dreadful start this season, and he's a bit down on home runs. But he has been killing it the last month and a half. He's a good hitter, gets on base, smashes a lot of doubles, he's a terrific fielder and an excellent base runner. I was happy for Billy Butler when he was chosen for the All-Star team -- he's a great guy, and a line-drive machine -- but Gordon is easily the best player on the Royals, and he should have been the Royals' representative in Kansas City".This is not to say that people here believe the Royals will win next year or the year after that. Royals fans know better than anyone what has been going on here. It's more subtle than that. For many years, Royals fans have been forced to watch unlikable teams featuring grizzled veterans who had no place else to go. Sometimes those veterans would have pretty good years -- Jay Bell did, Paul Byrd and Tim Belcher did, Rey Sanchez and Jose Offerman and Mark Grudzielanek did -- in which case they would find the first train out of town. Anyway, more of them were disasters. The team never got better, and because of this and because the Royals have so much less money to spend than some others, the few impressive young players who came along, like Johnny Damon and Jermaine Dye and Zack Greinke and Carlos Beltran, would leave first chance they could. It was a concentric circle of agony. So this team, hey, at least its young, and there are some players who could be stars, and there are a few more on the way. The hope is not that the Royals will suddenly emerge, the way the Nationals have or the Rays did a few years ago. No, this is a much more vague kind of hope -- that good things might somehow happen.See, people in Kansas City love baseball. They love all sports really -- this is a great sports town. When the Chiefs were good (not great, mind you, but just good), no place in America cared more. This is a real college basketball hotbed, and college football captures the imagination when the teams show signs of life. But baseball fits the cities rhythms. Baseball goes back here to those years long before anyone thought Kansas City was major league. Lou Gehrig played his last game here, you know. Mickey Mantle almost quit baseball here. Jackie Robinson started his baseball career here. The 1939 Kansas City Blues might be the greatest minor league team ever. And the 1942 Kansas City Monarchs -- with Satchel Paige and Hilton Smith and Willard Brown and the like -- might be one of the greatest baseball teams ever, period. For that decade between 1976 and 1985 when the Royals were winning, the Royals were always in the top five in attendance, the Royals talk consumed the city and, even more, the region. The Royals were Oklahoma's team and Nebraska's team and parts of Iowa and Arkansas, too. Of course, the Cardinals had owned the Midwest for a half century, and largely still do, but the Royals meant something. They wore blue, and they turned singles into doubles, and they broke up double plays, and they caught everything, and they didn't need the home run to win but when they hit one the fountains in the outfield would dance. This was the spirit of Kansas City baseball, the spirit that the last 25 years has stepped on and kicked and stabbed. But that spirit is still around. The forecasters are calling for it to be 106 degrees today, and the grass has yellowed, and the Royals are 8 1/2 back already, and the Royals still have unhelpful veterans like Jeff Francoeur and Yuni Betancourt in their everyday lineup, and Jonathan Sanchez wrecks things every fifth day while the guy he was traded for, Melky Cabrera, is hitting like.789 in San Francisco. But people still care. They still care enough to want GM Dayton Moore to be pushed out and owner David Glass to sell. They still care enough to check Wil Myers' amazing numbers in the minors (.327/.403/.676 with 20 doubles, five triples and 27 homers in 83 games between Class AA and Class AAA), they still care enough to notice Hosmer's coming on, and Moustakas is playing a nice third base and to check in on how the surgeries for Danny Duffy and Felipe Paulino are going.Kansas City is probably the smallest market in baseball. There are numerous ways to judge such things -- population in the city, population in the metro area, population going out 100 miles, television market size, radio reach -- and in all of those, Kansas City and Milwaukee scrape bottom. If Major League Baseball was starting a 30-team league right now, Kansas City almost certainly would not get a team. The Royals are here for the effort and obsessive believe of a few people who loved this town -- mainly owner Ewing Kauffman and sportswriters Ernie Mehl and Joe McGuff -- and stayed here because people cared, and have kept caring. It isn't easy. There are some inside Kansas City who think the city would be better off without the Royals, and many, many more outside the city limits who think baseball would be better off without Kansas City. But enough people still love the Royals, and every summer the Royals play, and people keep hoping for the best.* * *Kansas City gets the All-Star Game, and it's likely that this will be the last time Kansas City will be in the national sports spotlight for a long time. Kansas City used to be in the spotlight with regularity. There have been 10 Final Fours here, more than any other city. The NCAA was based here. There were two World Series here, a Davis Cup semifinal, numerous NFL playoff games including the Christmas Day game that is one of the best ever played. Tom Watson stayed here, so did George Brett. They kept Kansas City in the news. Heck, they played the Pro Bowl here if you can believe that. But times have changed. Unless something dramatic changes -- and it almost certainly won't -- there won't ever be a Super Bowl here, a U.S. Open here, another Final Four here. There's a beautiful arena downtown that was built largely for an NBA or NHL team that almost certainly won't ever come. Another World Series seems as distant as anything. The All-Star Game won't come back for a long time.So this is it: Kansas City's time to be at the heart of the sports world. But what will people really see in just a couple of days? I hope they will enjoy what's here. I hope they go to the Negro Leagues Museum* and appreciate the history of 18th and Vine. I suspect they will try the barbecue and have their own opinions about that. I hope they will drive around a little bit, see some of those boulevards and fountains, shop a bit at the Plaza and all those sorts of things. Baseball stars will be all over the place, and there will be many celebrations, and it will be fun."*I will be there often, but especially on Tuesday morning. At 9 a.m. I will be talking about Buck O'Neil and signing "The Soul of Baseball" for anyone who brings a copy. And then, around 10:30 -- this is really cool -- I'll be talking hitting with Tony Gwynn. Come on out."Let's be honest: There will be wisecracks. There are always wisecracks. People will come here and they will feel the oppressive heat, and they will see some empty stores downtown, and they will find that the stadiums are kind of in the middle of nowhere. They will see that Kansas City isn't a good public transportation town -- no light rail, no subway, cabs are as rare as 60-degree summer days. They will see a city without a real center; there have been so many efforts to resuscitate downtown but, meanwhile, the people keep moving south. They will land at an airport that feels small and has few restaurants or shops and isn't particularly close to anything. But, in a way, that airport is a perfect way to describe Kansas City. Those things I just said are true -- the airport does feel small, and it isn't close to much, and it isn't particularly attractive for tourists, and unlike the airports in so many places there are is no great food court, no cool stores. But you know what? It's my favorite airport in the country. Because if you live in Kansas City, the parking is easy, and the walk is easy, and unlike any other major airport there are a dozen or more entry points so the security lines are almost always short. Picking someone up or dropping them off is easy. The stores have what you need. And like every place in Kansas City, the people are friendly. The airport, for a traveler who lives in Kansas City, is something close to perfect. It may not impress anyone just coming to visit, but once you've lived here for a while you realize: It's an amazing place.

COMMEMORATED ON SEPTEMBER 4The Holy Prophet and God-Seer Moses was of the tribe of Levi, the son of Abram and Jochabed (Exodus 6:20). His life is described in the Bible (Exodus 2 through Deuteronomy 34:12). Moses was born in Egypt around 1689 B.C. When Pharaoh ordered all male children of the Hebrew slaves to be killed (Exodus 1:22), Moses' mother placed him in a basket of papyrus coated with pitch, and set him adrift on the Nile. Pharaoh's daughter found him and raised him as her own son. At the age of eighty, Moses fled to Midian, where he spoke to God in the Burning Bush on Mt. Horeb (Exodus 3:2). God chose Moses to lead His people from the slavery of Egypt. They crossed the Red Sea as if it were dry land, and for forty years they wandered in the desert. Arriving in the land of Moab, Moses went to the top of Mt. Nabau, or Nebo (Deuteronomy 32:49), which is called Phasga (Deut. 34:1). There, according to the will of God, he died in 1569 B.C. at the age of 120 without entering the Promised Land. The first two Biblical Odes are attributed to Moses: "Let us sing to the Lord..." (Exodus 15:1-9), which was sung on the shores of the Red Sea after the Hebrews had crossed it. "Attend, O heaven..." (Deut. 32:1-43) was sung in the land of Moab, a few days before Moses' death. He is also regarded as the author of the Pentateuch (the first five books of the Old Testament). The holy Prophet Moses performed many miracles during his lifetime, and also after his death. He appeared on Tabor with the Prophet Elias at the Transfiguration of the Lord (August 6).On the day that St John of the Ladder (March 30) was installed as abbot of Mt. Sinai, the Prophet Moses was seen going around and giving orders to the cooks, stewards, and servants. When the guests had gone and the monks were sitting at table, they wondered what had become of the stranger who had been giving orders. St John said, "Our Lord Moses does nothing strange by serving in the place which belongs to him."TROPARION - TONE 2You ascended to the heights of the virtues, Prophet Moses; therefore, you were deemed worthy to see the glory of God. Having received the grace-filled tablets of the Law,and bearing the grace of the writing within yourself, you were the honorable praise of prophets, and a great mystery of piety.KONTAKION - TONE 2 The choir of prophets rejoices with Moses and Aaron today, for the fulfillment of their prophecy is in our midst. The Cross, by which You have saved us, shines forth today.By their prayers, O Christ God, have mercy on us.SOURCE:"SAINT OR FEAST POSTED THIS DATE 2007:"
Sts. Xanthippe and Polyxene (Feast Day - September 23)
By Protopresbyter Fr. George Papavarnavas
Saints Xanthippe and Polyxene were sisters according to the flesh. They were from Spain and lived in the first century during the reign of Emperor Claudius (41-54 A.D.). Both sought the true faith which would bring meaning to their lives, and it pleased God for them to come to known it and then strive with all their strength to disseminate it.
Xanthippe was the wife of Probus, the ruler of the country. She was led to faith in Christ with her husband by the Apostle Paul, when he was in their country. Polyxene was a virgin and before her baptism she was tried by a great temptation. A certain libidinous man attempted to corrupt her, but the Grace of God preserved her and she remained unharmed. After this her desire grew to search for the true God which caused her to move from place to place. God made her worthy to hear the preaching of the Apostles Peter, Andrew and Philip. She became a disciple of the Apostle Andrew, who baptized her together with Rebecca, her friend and companion on her journey. After her baptism she returned to Spain, together with the Apostle Onesimus and Rebecca, and lived there the remainder of her life. The two sisters, Xanthippe and Polyxene, by divine zeal as genuine disciples of the holy Apostles, preached the true faith and led many well-intentioned to salvation. Although they lived in a time when members of the Church were persecuted and killed after cruel and inhuman torture, it pleased God for both of them to complete their lives in peace, at an advanced age.
Their life and times give us the opportunity to highlight the following:
Preaching the word of God is necessary because, when done the right way, it helps people to believe. Saint Gregory Palamas, interpreting the Gospel passage that mentions the healing of the paralytic - who was lowered with ropes before Christ after the roof of a house was destroyed - says that in order for people to believe they must first hear the word of God, which is why Christ "spoke unto them the word".
For the word of God to take hold and bear fruit in the souls of the listeners it must fall on fertile ground, "beautiful and good land", since there are many people who like to hear the word of God, but few people who strive to apply it in their lives. This is because, as Saint Gregory Palamas says: "All love to hear and to see, but not all are lovers of God." That is, everybody likes to hear and see things, but, unfortunately, few have a love for virtue, which is why there are few who hold within their hearts the word and strive to make it an experience and way of life. Characteristic is the phrase of Christ, which He repeated numerous times to the listeners of His words: "They who have ears to hear, hear." That is, whoever has their ears open, especially the ears of their soul, let them hear, that they may obey and apply what I say.
Fruition, however, does not only depend upon the earth, but also on the quality of the seed. In other words, the fruition of the word of God in the hearts of people does not only depend on the listeners, but also on the preachers of the word of God. The first, as mentioned, should have the desire to apply what they hear in their lives, but the latter should try to offer the people the word of God in a pure and unadulterated manner, as the Orthodox Church has experienced it and taught it through her Holy Fathers. Also, before the sermon they should pray for themselves, as well as for their listeners, whom they should primarily teach and inspire with their example. This means that whatever they teach they should first strive to apply this within their own lives, since, as Saint Seraphim of Sarov says, the greatest missionaries are those in whom is "the intensity of prayer and example". But the listeners should also pray together for the preachers of the Divine word, that God may enlighten them to correctly teach the word of His truth, and then for themselves, that Christ may open their mind "to be presented with the scriptures".
In our days we hear many sermons, but from what it seems by the results, few are those which touch the hearts of people and lead them to repentance and spiritual regeneration. Perhaps this is because they are reflections and pious thoughts, which are the words of men, and do not have the power to comfort, support and regenerate man. Indeed, sometimes, because in human words there are energies of the passions, they cause the opposite effect, that is, they cause confusion, agitation and sometimes despair. Rather, the word of God regenerates, heals, comforts and gives meaning to life, since "it is a living, active and sharp double-edged sword, penetrating deeply... discerning thoughts and the intentions of hearts." Once they told Christ, as He was teaching the people, that His Mother and brothers (the children of Joseph) were asking for Him. He, pointing His hand to His disciples, said: "Behold my mother and my brothers." He then added: "They who do the will of My Father Who is in the Heavens, they will be My brother, sister, mother."
It is truly an honor and blessing for all of us to be worthy to become mothers and brethren of Christ. It depends on us.

Although Samhain on October 31st is the Witches' New Year, many Neo-Pagans like to celebrate the "other" New Years Eve as well on December 31st. And why not? It's another opportunity for us to jump-start any projects and make new resolutions.
If you followed the ritual for Samhain in my Wheel of the Year eBook "Simple Wiccan Magick Spells and Ritual Ceremony," you created a touch stone, painted it in your favourite power colour and marked the year on it. You've been using it as a daily reminder to focus on your most important goals.
If not, you can do this now. Cleanse it and charge it and place it in a prominent spot.
New Year's Day is a wonderful time for cleansing and blessing your home and work space. A easy way to do this is to walk a stick of sage incense through every room, saying, "Goddess cleanse this space and fill it with grace."
Blessed be and enjoy your second New Years' celebrations!

Boy, you don't ask the easy ones. Dr. Regardie takes 12 volumes to
admission this one; Aleister Crowley, 13 or so; Isaac Bonewits, two (and that's on its own introductory).
I'll try to go over, but if you're really probing, touch down
Starhawk's THE Swirl Action for give preferentiality to niceties. Highest scholars element ritual hip two classes: 1) theurgic, and 2) thaumaturgic. In like
words, this means that either you are praying to make your self "a superior human being" or "rather to God/ess" or "to be saved from your sins", or you are praying for the God/ess to pry in the world with brute force you - prayers for calm, for money, for health, etc.
Neopagan ritual partakes of what's more aspects, to some range. In a archetypal ritual, poles apart techniques (as old as humanity) are used to "raise the power," subsequently the power is focused via magickal symbols to get hold of the God(s) and/or Divinity(es) who are living thing called upon. He/She/They situate that magickal energy, spread it, and return it to the circle. The Raise
Priest/ess subsequently focuses that energy on the route - the carp or human being to be brazenly, if any - subsequently any energies that establish yourself (or the weigh up energy, if offer is no magickal route) are returned to the Gods, via a processes called "training."
To reaffirm Uncle Isaac's saintly book on the topic, you contain the wind-up, the provender, and the follow-through.
The windup uses any ritual techniques that are interpret to a) the
stage set, b) the meaning of the ritual, c) the deities living thing contacted, and d) the skills of the participants. The universals are chanting, spring, and
"ritual theatre." Organize are, of course, others.
The "provender" uses penalize, romantic metaphors in guided meditations and ritual pounce. Not often (if would-be), this uses music and spring.
As soon as the gods are contacted and the energy flows, it is subconscious in an carp - in general cakes and wine, but occasionally by other means - and circulate, symbolically to all the participants. Having partaken of the energy so raised, the guided meditations avenue the relatives in focusing their energy on the meaning at hand.
From tip to toe, the Raise Holy woman or Priestess goes defeat a "follow-through",
which involves dissolving the "group mortal", reassuring relatives that what we contain worked is done and was effective, and subsequently "training" any floating energies, so that equally the group foliage the ritual circle, they are back in their solid minds.
As I join, it occurs to me that the real admission to your suggestion lies in that obstruction way of thinking - "back in their solid minds." Neopagan ritual is a line of tools and techniques for varying your consciousness,
conditionally, to a place everyplace the Gods and Goddesses are real and muggy, everyplace we as their children and lovers and friends can honey them, and everyplace the magick we work can come true. Having convinced ourselves of this, we act on it, subsequently return to our broadsheet lives refreshed.
(Gods, what a loop of gibberish! You would contain been superior off reading the books!)
Despite, I tried. Everybody as well (esp. Black Dragon if he shows up again, as he's worked at smallest amount of as greatly ritual as I) convince talent free to add or disparagement. Was this the lenient of admission you desired, Curly?
