Ever since I was young I've had a "thing" about religion and spirituality. Although I often found myself disagreeing with various religious beliefs, or with ideas being presented as supposedly representative of various religions, I still had respect for the underlying concepts. Sometimes, I found that people would create religions not to help others, but to help themselves-generally to power, money, and/or sex. I didn't like what they were doing. I felt they were harming others by mocking religions or spiritual paths.

I still feel this way.

And that brings me to Xmas.

When I was old enough to understand that Xmas was an abbreviation for Christmas, I felt there was something wrong with it. Even though I didn't believe in Christmas (except for the gifty part), I felt it was disrespectful to take Christ our of Christmas and replace it with an X.

I'm not the only one who believes this way. According to Wikipedia, evangelist Franklin Graham believes "Xmas" is wrong as does the author and news commentator Roland S. Martin, who said:

...for us as Christians, this is one of the most holy of the holidays, the birth of our savior Jesus Christ. And for people to take Christ out of Christmas. They're happy to say merry Xmas. Let's just take Jesus out. And really, I think, a war against the name of Jesus Christ.

Today, some news commentators claim there is a "war on Christmas." In examining the proof for this claim, I find it to be not just false, but amazingly false. However, the seeming disrespect of having X replace the title Christ in Xmas is plain and obvious. It looked bad to me. In fact, how did the Latin letter "X," pronounced "eks," come to replace the title "Christ" at all? Not only did it feel wrong to me, it made no sense. So, being pre-internet, I went to the library and did some research.

It turns out that the X only "looks" like the Latin letter pronounced "eks." In actuality, it's the Greek letter "Chi," (pronounced "kai"), the first sound of the title "Christ." The use of "Xmas" is at least 1,000 years old. In English it has been respectfully used in writing by authors such as Lewis Carroll, Lord Byron, Samuel Coleridge, and U.S. Supreme Court justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr.

But the use of the X as an abbreviation for Christ goes back much further. It was combined with the Greek letter Rho, which has the shape of a "P," as symbolic of the title Christ. When pushed together, they form the "labarum" or Chi-Rho:

The labarum was used in many ancient Christian icons and symbols to represent Christ. It still is used this way in some Christian traditions. It supposedly goes back to the vision of Emperor Constantine as the sign, given to him in a dream vision, under which he conquered his opponents and turned Pagan Rome into a Christian state.

Often, people write me and ask if they can change a particular ritual. I like to point out that magick is (or should be!) an experimental science. Try the change out. If it works, use it. If it doesn't work, use the traditional method.

"I'M IN FAVOR OF CHANGE IF THERE'S A GOOD REASON FOR IT!"

I'm not a luddite who is simply against any change. But the fact is, rituals become traditional because they work. The Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram (LBRP) was created by the founders of the Golden Dawn but based on ancient Kabalistic concepts. As proof of its strength, when people try to "improve" it they basically just change a few words or actions. In "The Book of the Law", Crowley was told to "cast away" all of the old rituals because they were "black." But he follows the format of the LBRP with his Thelemic replacement ritual, the Star Ruby. To my mind, that's not "casting away" so much as giving it a bit of a nudge.

But there's a difference between what Crowley did with the Star Ruby and what some people do with their "improvements" to Golden Dawn rituals. By the time Crowley wrote the Star Ruby he was an expert occultist. He knew the purpose for each of his changes. Some of the changes I've seen to versions of the LBRP have clearly been written by people who didn't know what they were doing.

I am in favor of change in rituals if the people making the change know what they are doing and if there is a legitimate and mystical reason for the change. However, should the reason simply be because a ritual has been deconstructed?

One of my favorite passages in a Golden Dawn ritual is the honoring of the Divine. It reads like this:

Holy art Thou Lord of the Universe

Holy art Thou whom Nature has not formed,

Holy art Thou the vast and the Mighty One

Lord of the Light and of the Darkness.

Some people read this and their modern-day sexist buzzers go off. "Lord of the Universe?" That's sexist. How can the ruler of the universe only be a male "lord?" As a result, some people have changed this first line to read "Ruler of the Universe" or "Lord and Lady of the Universe" as this takes into account both genders. It balances this elegant evocation of the Divine. Doesn't it?

What Praying For The Peace Of Jerusalem Really Means Also Muslim Brotherhood Crucifying Protestors

The world is at the brink and staring at the abyss, and the world knows it. That's why the world is clamoring for a strong leader with answers to take charge. That person is not the next President of the United States. That person is not the next United Kingdom Prime Minister. That person is not the next North Korean king. That person will be the antichrist.

The war talk from Middle East leaders is not just rhetoric any more. The usual chest thumping, threats, rhetorical subterfuge, ambassadorial slyness and outright propaganda has changed in tone and substance. Israel is talking about imminent war and speaking of actual fronts. Israel expert JOEL ROSENBERG SAID THIS a few days ago:

"Yes, it is possible that Israeli leaders could be bluffing. Yes, it is also possible that they are simply trying to pressure the U.S. and international community to take more decisive action to neutralize the Iranian nuclear threat. But reading the latest tea leaves, I believe evidence is rapidly mounting that this could really be it - Israel could be just days or weeks away from a massive preemptive strike against Iran. I believe there are significant changes in the way Israeli leaders are speaking about the possibility of war. One fact that has particularly caught my attention in the last 24 hours is that Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon is telling reporters that it is time for the world to admit that diplomacy has not worked, and that Iran only has "weeks" and not "months" to cease nuclear activity."

Rosenberg's last few posts have exclusively focused on the Middle East situation, specifically Israel-Iran. In the last few days he has consecutively posted,

SAUDI CLERIC QUESTIONS HOLOCAUST

"A prominent Saudi Arabian religious cleric declared that the Holocaust is an "exaggeration" and that Jewish people consume the blood of children during a wide-ranging interview with an Arabic television station. Saudi cleric Salman Al-Odeh, a well-known scholar revered by millions globally, went on a lengthy tirade against the Jews during an interview Monday in which he stated that "the role of the Jews is to wreak destruction, to wage war, and to practice deception and extortion," according to a translation of his remarks by the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI). Al-Odeh ranted about the use of human blood in Jewish religious rituals, a notorious anti-Semitic smear commonly referred to as a "blood libel."

The news article called it a tirade but it wasn't. It was actually a calm and reasoned, quite believable argument against the Holocaust and against the sanctity of God and the right of the Jews, His people, to exist. That is why his lie is so devastating.

MUSLIM BROTHERHOOD SUPPORTERS SCOURGE AND CRUCIFY SECULAR PROTESTERS

"According to reports on Friday, Muslim Brotherhood supporters scourged and crucified secular protesters in Egypt's capital city of Cairo. Using the same punishments described in Bible as having been inflicted on Jesus, Brotherhood backed mobs rampaged through the streets, seizing protesters against the Islamist government of Mohammad Morsi, and dragging secular journalists from their offices. Their victims were beaten, scourged with whips, and crucified naked on trees."

As a watchman, I must bring you this news. I must show you the times in which we live. I must tell of the glory of Jesus, who is and was and IS TO COME- "SOON". It is not doom and it is not gloom- it is hope.

Psalm 122:6-9 gives us instructions on what to pray regarding Jerusalem. As a matter of fact, being God, He not only commands to pray for Jerusalem, but promises blessings unto those who do! (Blessed are the peacemakers- Matthew 5:9). The Psalm says-

Pray for the peace of Jerusalem! "May they be secure who love you!

Peace be within your walls and security within your towers!"

For my brothers and companions' sake I will say, "Peace be within you!"

For the sake of the house of the Lord our God, I will seek your good.

Peace in Jerusalem & Israel will only come when Jesus Himself returns to establish permanent peace. Between now and that blessed day, terrible wars and holocausts will occur on the people of Israel and then the world. However, God uses the devastating military attacks upon Israel, especially the Gog-Magog war of Ezekiel 38-39, to show Israel that no military might will ever be sufficient to protect them, and that He alone is their protector. It is during the Ezekiel 38 battle that Israel seeks the LORD and turns to Him. They cry out to the LORD and He saves them from Iran's threat of obliteration. Blessed be the LORD!

Therefore we must understand that before that peace comes, praying for the peace of Jerusalem means that the worst wars of the world will happen. Just as prior to the new babe born of a mother, there is agonizing pain of the bloody labor. But would a mother trade that pain, forgoing giving birth to new life? No. The pain is instantly forgotten when the new babe, who is beloved and precious to the parents, is placed in their arms. So it is with God.

He will birth a new age, one with satan gone into the pit for 1000 years, one where Jesus is seen in His glory by His bride gathered around Him, with His people Israel thriving under His reign.

As of today, the fact remains, that praying for the peace of Jerusalem means that we are praying for His return! We must steel ourselves for the persecutions. How long will it take the angry mobs of 'Muslim Brothers' to turn from crucifying and scourging other Muslims and turn their satanic wrath to crucifying and scourging Christians and Jews? Not long. No, not long at all now. We must prepare our minds for the utter knowledge that wars and horror will come, and we are not gleeful nor excited about that. We lament in our prayers for the peace of Jerusalem, because we know what it entails. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.

Circuit Judge Diane S. Goodstein's CAREFULLY CRAFTED 46-PAGE DECIsion in the case brought by Bishop Mark Lawrence's Episcopal Diocese of South Carolina (along with 35 of its parishes, plus St. Andrew's, Mt. Pleasant) against the Episcopal Church (USA) and its rump group (ECSC, or "Episcopal Church in South Carolina") is a complete vindication of the positions taken and arguments advanced for so long, by so many, inside and outside the Church.

It is a vindication first, for the Right Reverend Mark Lawrence and his legal team, who conceived the winning strategy, assembled and put on all the evidence, wrote all the briefs, argued all the appeals, fought back in the federal courts, and at last brought ECUSA to its day of reckoning.

It is a vindication, as well, of Bishop Lawrence's PASTORAL STRATEGIES, by which he showed how spiritual leaders can follow and submit themselves to the civil law, while in doing so remain faithful and Biblical counselors and guides for those in their spiritual care. It was Bishop Lawrence who decided on behalf of his Diocese not to appeal THE "ALL SAINTS WACCAMAW" DECISION to the U.S.

Supreme Court and RUN THE RISK OF DIVIDING HIS PARISHES STILL FURTHER. It was Bishop Lawrence who accepted responsibility for GIVING EACH PARISH IN HIS DIOCESE A QUITCLAIM DEED in compliance with the holding in "All Saints Waccamaw "that the Dennis Canon could on its own not create a trust in any property in South Carolina. These decisions led to the accusations of "abandonment" brought against Bishop Lawrence by his detractors, but they were pastorally the "right" decisions to make under the circumstances. Had ECUSA's leaders shown a comparable willingness to submit to the everyday requirements of the civil law, the Church would not be where it is today: millions and millions of dollars poorer, with absolutely nothing to show from the squandering of all its trust funds.

It is a vindication of all of the faithful parishioners and clergy in the Episcopal Diocese of South Carolina who remained by their Bishop, and provided much-needed financial support, as ECUSA and its minions sought to bring him down by the sheer weight of all the forces they could bring to bear against him and his Diocese... AS HAS LONG BEEN ARGUED ON THIS BLOG, ANY RESTRICTION WHICH ECUSA TRIED TO PUT UPON THE ABILITY OF ITS MEMBER DIOCESES TO WITHDRAW WOULD BE IN VIOLATION OF THE FIRST AMENDMENT, AND UNENFORCEABLE IN ANY CIVIL COURT IN THE LAND.
