The Greek God Hades

The Greek God Hades
Hades was the king of the underworld. He was the brother of Zeus the king of the gods. Hades was the oldest son of the titan gods Kronos and Rhea. Kronos was the king of the gods and the god of time. He heard a prophecy that foretold one of his children growing up to overthrow him as the king of the gods. Kronos made sure this would not happen and each time Rhea gave birth to one of his children he would eat the child. This was a metaphor for time consuming everything. Hades along with his brothers and sisters were each swallowed up by Kronos. Hades, Hera, Poseidon, Hestia and Demeter were all consumed by their father. Zeus was the youngest of the children and when he was born Rhea hid him from his father and instead offered Kronos a stone wrapped up in swaddling. Kronos was deceived by this and ate the stone. Zeus grew up and finally challenged his father. With the help of the goddess Metis (wisdom) he made Kronos disgorge all of the children he had eaten. When Hades and his siblings were freed, they along with Zeus fought their father until finally they defeated Kronos and threw him out of the heavens. At this point Hades was not the king of the underworld. The poet Homer says that Zeus, Poseidon and Hades decided to draw lots to find out who should have authority over the sky, sea and underworld. Hades drew the lot that gave him kingship of the underworld. The underworld was a place with different rivers and areas. There were five rivers, Kokyos (lamentation), Phlegethon (fire), Acheron (woe), Lethe (oblivion) and Styx (hate). The main regions of the underworld were the fields of Asphodel, the isles of the blessed, Tartaros and the pools of Lethe and Mnemosyne (memory). In later Greek religion the initiates of mystery cults such as the Elysium mysteries and Orphic cults taught that they could drink from the pool of memory in the underworld and thus retain their sense of self in the afterlife. During the times of Homer (c.800-700BC) such beliefs were not prominent, with a pessimistic view of witless shades the outcome for most mortals. Hermes would usher the psyche of the dead person into the underworld where it would lose all memory of the person it once was. Odysseus met the shades of the dead in Homer's Odyssey (book 11). He visits the fields of Asphodel and performs a ritual sacrifice of a black goat. The blood from this sacrifice is mixed with barley and poured into a circular ditch. The shades approach and when they drink the blood retrieve their memories and are able to converse with Odysseus. Tartaros was the deepest section of the underworld and a place of punishment for impious mortals, titans and giants. The isles of the blessed (Elysium fields) is a later optimistic view of the underworld where the sun shone and the heroes lived in a sort of semi immortality. The pool of memory is where the judges of the underworld resided. They were Rhadamanthos, Minos and Aeakos. The most famous story involving Hades was his theft of Persephone. Persephone was the daughter of the goddess Demeter. She was out in a meadow with her friends when Hades appeared from the ground and snatched her away. Demeter searched for her daughter for many months and threatened to stop the spring months from coming to earth. Zeus intervened and told Hades to release Persephone. Hades knew that he could keep her if he tricked her into eating something so he gave her a pomegranate seed to eat. Finally a compromise was reached with Demeter and Hades. Persephone would live with Demeter during the spring, summer and first months of autumn. She would then live with Hades in the underworld during the latter months of autumn and winter. This story was a way of explaining why there were fruitful times of the year and times when little would grow. Another famous story involving Hades was when Pirithous and Theseus. Theseus decided to abduct Helen of Sparta and keep her until she was old enough to marry. Pirithous decided to abduct Persephone from the underworld. The two heroes descended in the kingdom of Hades and attempted to take Persephone. Hades knew of their plan before they arrived and soon imprisoned the heroes. He tricked them by pretending to host a great feast. The heroes were enjoying the entertainment when the food started to turn to snakes which coiled around them and acted like chains. Herakles would later rescue Theseus, however Pirithous would remain a prisoner in the underworld. Hades is rarely depicted in art, however it is safe to assume that his appearance would be similar to Zeus. He did not have temples dedicated to him like the other gods, however he was remembered in prayer. Although Hades is a very important god he has not ranked as one of the 12 Olympian gods. Special honours known as the secular games were held every hundred years in honour of Hades. Losing Weight Is Not Just Wishful Shrinking

Losing Weight Is Not Just Wishful Shrinking
"The once and future beauty queen from the "State of Confusion"

As you can imagine, my 180-pound weight loss experience following a low-carb lifestyle has given me a heart to help others who are suffering in the ugly world of obesity like I once was. It's like you know the answer to the question they've been looking for their entire lives and you want to tell everyone you can about what it can do for them.

I came across this creatively-titled blog named "Wishful Shrinking" recently. The author of the blog who calls herself Psyche (and, no, that's not a joke like we used to go around pulling on each other and then exclaiming "psssssyyyyyyyche!"). She is a five-foot seven-inch, 35-year-old woman who weighed 260 pounds when she started on a journey last month to lose 110 pounds. So far, she's lost 22 pounds (WOO HOO!) and has 88 more to reach her goal. She'd like to eventually lose an additional 15 pounds after that and reach 135 pounds.

She contemplated having weight loss surgery like my friend Beth Badore and her husband did, but Psyche decided to go with Weight Watchers to help her lose the weight instead. Let me be perfectly clear here. You can and will lose weight on virtually any diet program that you can dedicate yourself 100 percent to as a permanent lifestyle change. That's undeniable and I've even proven weight loss can happen with ANY diet.

But the point of any diet is to not only help you lose weight, but to keep you at that new weight long after the "diet" part of it ends. As you know, I don't like calling livin' la vida low-carb a "diet." Diets are temporary, but what I did was start a new lifestyle for me -- the low-carb lifestyle. It was the best program I have ever seen for losing and then maintaining your weight loss. It is not only good for the short-term, but the long-term, too. I fully intend on eating this way for the rest of my life and I've VERY HAPPY about that. No longer will I ever have to live with the heartache and pain of being an obese person. I once thought I was destined to be fat forever because that was my lot in life. Nevermore!

For Psyche, I sincerely hope and pray that the changes she is experiencing in her eating habits can take hold for her for the sake of her physical health. Like I was before losing weight, she is on the verge of some very serious medical complications if this weight does not come off of her. Looking at that picture of her at her blog, I can see the face of a woman which such an exhuberant spirit of optimism that I am confident she will succeed in her weight loss and the beauty queen that's hiding inside of her right now is just waiting to walk the runway of life. One year from now, people will forget how Psyche used to look and she will take on a new persona. It happened to me and it will happen for Psyche, too.

God bless you, Psyche and I wish you all the best in your journey towards weight reduction and better health! You can make a comment for Psyche at her "Wishful Shrinking" blog and let her know "Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Man" sent you. :-)

This story was told by the three Graces (or Charities), of how Aphrodite The Divinity of Prized associated the Olympians. Fearing her power to bring about trouble and believably do a war (with the Gods), Zeus straight marital off Aphrodite to Hephaistos (Hephestus). Not jocular with her new part as group, Aphrodite tended to sentient up trouble. But as soon as she was not causing a adolescent impudence, she was save mortals such as with Pygmalion who had fallen in love with the drawing he created. Aphrodite settled his prayer and turned the statue featuring in a living be alive being. The real trouble starts as soon as Eris, Divinity of Glory, Suffering and Schism showed up unwelcome to the wedding of Thetis and Peleus. Religion In Ancient Greece

Religion In Ancient Greece
This is a subject which has come up among people I know a few times. People get upset about depictions of the gods for entertainment purposes, or they think we, meaning the community, should be upset. Deities are often depicted in ways contrary to their mythology. Even worse, many are depicted in a light hearted manner and made fun of, or even in a completely negative way. Some culprits include Disney's Hercules movie and cartoon with its depictions of many Greek gods, the Grimm Adventures of Billy and Mandy and their depiction of Eris, Erik the Viking and its depiction of the Norse pantheon, and the Herc's adventure game on the PSX (okay, no one really knows about that last one but me, cool game though). Right now the subject is being brought up again due to the releases of Clash of the Titans and Percy Jackson's Lightning Thief, both movies that depict various gods. The question is, is this wrong? Are the gods being profaned? Is it something that we, possibly being very spiritually tied to and close to these gods, should be offended by? Society says we should be. Most of the other religions are after all. Its recently become a bit of a fad to make fun of Jesus, but in the past any depiction that wasn't following the general Christian belief on Jesus's life and times was controversial (such as The Last Temptation of Christ and Jesus Christ Superstar). Native Americans get upset when their rituals, gods, and spirituality are inaccurately portrayed. There are Muslims that threaten to kill people because of depictions of Muhammad. This isn't to say every person in these religions feels this way, or that this is true of every single religion. But a lot of religions don't like their gods and sacred figures depicted in disparaging or inaccurate ways, especially by outsiders. So should we too? Most people who are polytheists or pagans or whatever they're calling themselves were once part of one of these mainstream religions. And they left their original religion most likely because they didn't like the religion, they didn't like the beliefs, they didn't like the behavior of the people in the religion, and for the most part they were unhappy with the religion. Ironically they take these same habits that they learned from this 'unacceptable' religion and carry them right over into their new religion. But that doesn't answer the question. There are a series of good arguments that are not only against being offended, but are actually in favor of the depiction of the gods in modern entertainment. First and foremost, this isn't something new. Going all the way back to ancient Greece, we see the gods routinely depicted in poetry, plays, paintings, and sculptures. This continues on through out the Roman empire, through out the Middle Ages in Europe, through the Renaissance, right up into the modern day. So this is actually something that has been going on for quite some time. Now you might think there's a big difference between the epic poetry of the Greeks and a Disney cartoon. And although they aren't the same thing, and maybe one is better than the other (Hercules was far from Disney's best film after all), the core issue is the same. The artist is depicting the gods in an inaccurate way to serve their needs of telling the story they want to tell. The Iliad is one of the most influential literary works in the entire history of the world. It is one of only two pieces of the epic cycle that have survived in their entirety. It is also one of the major sources we have concerning Greek mythology and beliefs. Nobody who spiritually follows the Greek pantheon is going to call the Iliad profane. And yet Homer routinely depicts gods in inaccurate and even negative ways in order to serve his own idealistic agendas and personal politics within the poem. Ares is a good example. He's a god that Homer routinely trashes throughout the Iliad. Ares is often seen as an evil or negative or lesser god today due almost entirely to Homer's depiction and the depiction of Ares by contemporaries of Homer. And yet in ancient Greece Ares was a highly revered and respected god. He was one of the Olympians who are largely considered the most important and respected of the Greek gods. He was also one of the patron gods of Sparta, one of the strongest and influential cities within Greece. Prior to Homer he is not only depicted as a god of war, but also as a god of justice, vengeance, love, and righteousness. And Homer wasn't just mistaken in his depiction of Ares. Ares was specifically chosen for three reasons. First he wasn't originally a Greek god, he was imported into Greece from the outside. The Greeks had a very strong sense of ethnic pride, and although Ares' high standing in Greece despite coming from the outside is a testament to his reverence, being a non-Greek god gave Homer a lot of leeway in depicting him negatively. Secondly Homer was decidedly anti-war, and the Iliad has a strong anti-war message behind it. Ares, being a god of war, was a perfect target for Homer to take out his personal ideologies on. And lastly Homer was from Athens, a city whose patron god is Athena, a god that is often believed to be in conflict with Ares. Ares is also the patron god of Sparta, a city that was constantly in conflict with Athens. So trashing Ares was a way of saying "Yeah Athens - Sparta Sucks." And yet we don't view the Iliad as profane. Secondly we live in a time where the gods, for the most part, are not well recognized, taught about, or worshiped like they used to be. Without entertainment, most of us would only know the various myths from what we learned in school. I know where I live we only really learn about the Greek pantheon. The Roman pantheon we're taught is the same as the Greek pantheon with different names, the Norse and Egyptian pantheons aren't touched on, and I don't think most people even know there is a Celtic pantheon. With the rise of Neopagan religions and the strong movements to remove religion from public schools, it may not be too long until these myths are not taught at all. These movies and TV shows and cartoons may not depict the gods correctly, but at least they make people aware that they exist. With certain people, just hearing the name of a god can be enough to spark an interest, and a lot of people may be pushed to research these gods more in depth because of one of these depictions. I know my blog hits have gone up by about 10% since The Lightning Thief and Clash of the Titans came out due to people searching for Medusa. For a few people this may be enough to completely change their spirituality and lead them to a stronger and closer relationship with the gods. But even if it doesn't, it still makes them aware of a god and gives them some connection to that god. It also makes them more receptive to that god in the future. And the cartoons, which seem to upset people the most, are probably the best at doing this because they target children and make children more comfortable with and receptive to the gods. And this isn't any different than what was going on in Ancient Greece. Plays and poems were written about the gods so people would become aware of them and learn about them. The plays and poems that have survived to the modern day constitute a lot of what we know about Greek mythology. This is true of a lot of other pantheons too. My last argument is one I've used before concerning the gods. By their nature, a deity should be able to handle their own affairs. If there is something wrong or profane with the way they are being depicted, they should be able to take care of it themselves. At the very least, if human intervention is required, I would expect the offended deity to personally give instructions about what needs to be done. So unless a god has told you to be offended by something or take some sort of action, I'd say leave it alone. And by told you I don't mean you saw some obscure sign only you could understand. I mean the god appeared before you and said something like, "Hey [insert your name here], you need to go on the Disney message board and tell everyone how poorly I was depicted in their cartoon and how this offends everyone of your particular religion. Also threaten to boycott their products and whine about them to everyone you meet."

Macy Panders To Illuminati Wannabes With T Shirts

Macy Panders To Illuminati Wannabes With T Shirts
Infowars In response to an earlier post on Infowars about the Macy's department store retailing t-shirts with occult names and symbols, a comment dismissed this as an effort to market stuff to the so-called Goth sub-culture. Macy's line of t-shirts, however, go beyond any superficial Goth notions of dark, mysterious, and morbid imagery and are in fact advertisements for the religion of the New World Order. The Illuminati has a habit of inserting its religious and secret society symbols across the span of popular culture... and that includes clothing.

The following descriptions break down what is really behind the slogans on Macy's line of shirts:

CULT OF THE SERPENT

Serpent worship is nothing new - going back more than 5,000 years - and is intimately related to Freemasonry and the Illuminati. 33 Degree Mason Albert Pike, in his book, Morals and with its tail in its mouth, of Eternity," Pike wrote.

According to Dr. John Coleman, the Illuminati of today is directly related to the ancient Babylonian Serpent Cult and is "under the direct control of some very nefarious forces" (see WES PENRE, The Reptilian Agenda, Illuminati News, Dec 26, 2004). "Coleman in fact provides much evidence that 33rd degree Masonry has been used not only to infiltrate and take over many political, economic and religious institutions, but has also been used to 'create' such institutions as well, organizations to which people will flock and submit their power and energies to unknowingly serve an agenda that they know nothing about."

Council of Nine

The Council is directly connected to worship of the Mystery Religions and claims to be the Ennead, or the nine major gods of ancient Egypt. In Greek mythology, when Prometheus gave Fire to mankind, he infuriated Zeus, so to punish Prometheus, Zeus had him chained to a rock and every day an eagle came down and ate his liver. The liver grew back and the eagle returned to do the same to him the next day. To punish mankind, Zeus and eight other deities gathered to form the Council of Nine. The council members were Aphrodite, Apollo, Athena, Demeter, Hephaestus, Hera, Hermes, Poseidon and Zeus. As the legend has it, the Council created Pandora, and sent her, as a gift, to Epimetheus. Epimetheus was also given Pandora's Box, and told to never open it. Curiosity got the better of Pandora and she opened the box, releasing all of the misfortunes of Mankind.

According to researchers Lynn Picknett and Clive Prince, modern Council of Nine disciples include cutting edge scientists, multi-millionaire industrialists and leading politicians. Most notably, the Council of Nine was associated with Andrija Puharich (also known as Henry K. Puharich), a medical doctor who established the Round Table Foundation, a private paranormal research laboratory in Glen Cove, Maine.

ILLUMINATI KNIGHT

This appears to be a reference to the various orders of Illluminism, specifically Illuminatus Dirigens, or Scotch Knight of Illluminism, an intermediary degree. No doubt the "illuminated ones," that is to say secret members of the New World Order, dedicated to the stealthy conquest of nations and a one world government, find it at least mildly amusing that clueless useless eaters are walking around advertising the Illuminati.

Jinx

Jinx
Some people might put this name down for being "fake" or devoid of history. Before looking into this name I might have said the same thing (well, not the "fake" part, I don't know how a name can be "fake"). But what I found about this name was quite surprising.

Jinx seems like it would be perfect for Neo-Pagan parents. It is, after all, Latin for "spell." Or so some sources say. Others say that the name is derived from Iynx, the name of a nymph from Greek mythology. There are several conflicting stories regarding Iynx. She might be the daughter of Echo and Pan, or of Peitho and Pan. Iynx was a sorceress who invented a love charm that she named after herself. It consisted of a spinning wheel with a wryneck bird attached. Some stories say that she used this charm to make Zeus fall in love with her. But in the more popular versions, she used the charm to make Zeus fall in love with Io, who he raped. Hera was not amused, and transformed Iynx into a wryneck bird herself.

In another story, Iynx was one of the nine daughters of Pierus. The nine sisters entered a musical contest with the Muses. When they lost, they were all transformed into birds, Iynx turning into the wryneck bird.

What the heck is a wryneck bird? It's a type of woodpecker found in Africa and Eurasia that used to be quite common in Greece, and was very important to them spiritually. The bird is remarkable due to it's ability to turn it's head around 180 degrees, which is how it got it's English name. When it feels threatened it engages in odd, snakelike behavior, elongating it's neck and twisting it around while hissing. It was that bizarre ability that caught the attention of the Ancient Greeks. They occasionally used this bird for magic and divination, and they associated it with passionate, relentless love. According to legend, Aphrodite gave this bird to Jason, who then used it to excite the passion of Medea. The genus name of the wryneck bird is, you guessed it, Jinx.

The earliest known use of the word jinx that described something other than the bird was used in the context of baseball, of all things. It appeared in the short story "The Jinx" in 1910, and it was described as something that brought bad luck to ball players. After that, the meaning evolved into a type of curse that brought minor misfortune. It could also refer to talking about the future with too much confidence. Testing the Fates results in bad luck. It's original meaning seems to be forgotten even by Neo-Pagans, they also use the word to describe a curse or a charm.

Jinx is a common name, at least in the comic book world. Jinx is a supervillainess in Teen Titans, a bounty hunter in the graphic novel of the same name, and a martial artist in the G.I. Joe world. Giacinta "Jinx" Johnson was the Bond girl in Die Another Day, and was portrayed by actress Halle Berry. If you're looking for real-life namesakes, there is Jinx Dawson, who was the vocalist for the American rock band Coven. Coven is well known for it's biggest hit "One Tin Soldier," and for inventing the sign of the horns that's used in rock culture. There is also the Spanish/Chilean model-turned-actress Jinx Falkenburg (born Eugenia Lincoln Falkenburg, nicknamed "Jinx" by her mother).

Knowing all of that, I now think the name is awesome. But of course, not everyone is a name nerd and not everyone is going to get it. There are some that would think that this name is too...vampish for a child. Or too unlucky. Which might mean that you would have to explain it a lot. But if you're willing to accept those challenges, it's a cool name. With loads more history than people think. Damn, did I get schooled.

Her name wake "Spelt Mother;" spelt individualistic a caring of violent wheat nip concerning the Greeks which was sown in September. The winter was seen as a time a division, when Persephone laments her daughter's aspect in the criminal world with Hades. The union of Demeter and Hades was arranged of by Zeus, but when the earth got disheartened and crops shrunken, the other gods were frightened and asked Zeus to stick your nose in. Demeter had eaten a pomegranate precious stone with Hades...symbolizing the precious stone that encompasses the flood of life, death and recreation. Commencing she partook of whatever thing from the criminal world, she had to look after true to Hades, persistent every Autumn.Including the secret initiations and ceremonies skilled during this week was the View of the Consecrated Depressing, which I assume recycled a torch to exemplify the Sacred Char-grill. It's habitual to see the parallels. Blood relation, the Consecrated Wish, misses Sophia as she descends inside regard. Our physical life, our endorsement and our spirit are apiece contained in Demeter's pomegranate precious stone, and yet it fire at a surly symbol of the unity of all fabric. The image of Ceres, Demeter, the Virgin Mary, even Member of the aristocracy Authority...all of these article to the cycles of existence and the unfathomable and often uncertain birth of our existence as children of light living under the dark skirts of wisdom.

New Immortals Trailer Released

New Immortals Trailer Released
Henry Cavill, Henry Cavill half naked, and Henry Cavill's nipples - do we need another reason to see this film?

Kidding.

Well, we're not actually, but from the look of this new trailer there's far more reason to see Immortals than simply to perv on the future Superman. Though it is admittedly an added bonus.

Tarsem Singh's epic tale of treachery, vengeance and destiny tells the story of heroic stonemason Theseus (Cavill), who (with a bit of persuading from Luke Evans' Zeus) vows to avenge the death of his mother at the hands of power-mad, brutal and bloodthirsty King Hyperion (Michey Rourke) hell-bent on freeing the imprisoned Titans and destroying the Gods.

When Theseus meets the Sybelline Oracle, Phaedra (Freida Pinto), her disturbing visions of his future convince her that he is the key to stopping the destruction. With her help, Theseus assembles a small band of followers and embraces his destiny in a final desperate battle for the future of humanity.

With amazing special effects, a healthy dose of CGI and lots of sexy slo-mo, Immortals looks like it's going to beat the proverbial poop out of previous big screen greek mythology offering Clash Of The Titans.

Immortals hits cinemas on Friday 11 November, 2011.
