Damian Thompson, editor of the Telegraph blogs, MADE THIS ONLINE COMMENT YESTERDAY, in tribute to the 60th anniversary of the Queen's accession to the throne: "...I often think that the Queen is the most impressive religious leader in Britain. She says little in public about her Christianity, but what she does say - usually at the end of her Christmas Day broadcast -is powerful in its directness."
I wholly endorse what he says. Her Majesty, intuitively and skilfully, manages to remain the still centre of the ever-turning Anglican world simply by affirming her faith in Jesus Christ. In her Christmas message last year, quoted by Damian in his post, she stated: "God sent into the world a unique person - neither a philosopher nor a general, important though they are, but a Saviour, with the power to forgive. Forgiveness lies at the heart of the Christian faith. It can heal broken families. It can restore friendships and it can reconcile divided communities. It is in forgiveness that we feel the power of God's love."
The Queen has met plenty of philosophers and even more generals in her time. With her unique place at the summit of the Establishment, she has had innumerable opportunities to encounter the masters of this world in every walk of life. She knows their place and she knows her own. More than other modern monarchs, I think, she understands the spiritual significance of her coronation oath: a lifelong dedication to her people and her public duties; something to be undertaken with utmost seriousness. THE LONDON OBELISK: CLEOPATRA'S GHOSTS
London Obelisk from the Millenium Wheel
The next time you visit London, walk from the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben along the Thames Embankment until you are next to the seventy foot long Cleopatra's Needle.
At 186 tons, it weighs about ten times as much as the largest stone in Stonehenge, and was already 1500 years old before Stonehenge was built. Eight feet at the base, it is five feet wide at the top, before its seven foot high pyramidion starts. Take a moment to admire the two bronze sphinxes that stand guard over her.
"YOUR QUESTION TO THE OBELISK:" Then turn your eyes to the small pyramidion on the very top of the giant obelisk, and say out loud: "I call spirits from the vasty deep!" Listen carefully for an answer.Before we tell you what you might hear, we need to touch on a fascinating tapestry of history and legend.
"THE TAPESTRY THREAD:" This thread of mystery, and of ghosts, runs through and joins together Braveheart; the Gunpowder Plot; Thutmose III and his son, Thutmose IV; a stone slab between the giant paws of the Great Sphinx in Egypt; Cleopatra; the London obelisk; and a noble family we can call the Fighting Percy's, whose swords were ever close to hand throughout the centuries.Knowing this thread of wonder that joins these people, events and times, you will never look on this wonderful obelisk the same way again.
"THUTMOSE IV:" Let's start with Pharaoh Thutmose III, the maker of the Cleopatra's Needles which were moved from Egypt by Freemasons and are now found in London and Central Park in New York.

In Egypt these two obelisks had stood together. Gradually the restless sea closed in on the shore where they stood, and the obelisk which one day would grace London, teetered under the waves washing ashore, and about three hundred years ago it fell.
It served for a while as a bridge over a small ravine it had fallen over, while its twin - destined to be moved to Central Park - stayed upright.When Thutmose III died, he left several sons including one who became known as Thutmose IV when he became pharaoh.
"THE GREAT SPHINX:" When we visited Egypt as part of our research for our thriller, "Obelisk Seven", we paid a visit to the magnificent Great Sphinx. The biggest monument in a land of big monuments, the sphinx has a human head on the body of a lion. Nestling between the huge paws of the Sphinx is a stone tablet, called the "Dream Stela", placed there by Thutmose IV. The tablet tells the story of the younger son of Thutmose III who was hunting in the desert, and stopped to rest at the Sphinx, which was covered in sand up to its head. The prince fell asleep between the paws, and in his dream the Sphinx spoke to him, promising him the throne of Egypt if he would clear the sand covering it: The kingdom shall be given to you... The world shall be yours in its length and in its breadth, as far as the light of the eye of the lord of the universe shines... My countenance is gracious towards you, and my heart clings to you.Thutmose IV cleared the sand, became Pharaoh when his older brother - who was first in line for the throne - died before he could inherit it, and ruled for just under ten years.
"
Glenn line-height: 115%;">Now let's make the connection between Thutmose IV and the Great Sphinx, and the London obelisk. Look to her left and her right. Two seven ton bronze guardian sphinxes, nineteen feet long, six feet wide and nine feet tall, flank her, for her protection. In another post we talk about the shrapnel wounds in the body and paw of the sphinx to her right, from a German bombing raid during the First World War.These two guardian sphinxes are copies of a small foot-long sphinx of Thutmose IV, in the collection of the Duke of Northumberland at Alnwick Castle (pronounced Annick"). The Alnwick Castle sphinx has the face of Thutmose IV, on a lion's body, with the tail curling around the right hind leg.
"ALNWICK CASTLE:" Alnwick Castle was used for interior and exterior shots of the Hogwarts Castle in the Harry Potter films. The castle is the second largest inhabited castle in England, and since 1309 - for 700 years - has belonged to the powerful Percy family. The Percys have had a long history of intrigue and warring for centuries, fighting their own king as well as the Scots. A cousin of the earl of Percy played a part in the Gunpowder Plot of 1605, commemorated on Guy Fawkes Day each year. In 1297 Braveheart - William Wallace - launched an unsuccessful attack on the castle.Alnwick, and Alnwick Castle itself, have links to ghosts.

From the eleventh century A.D., the castle was famous for a vampire - known locally as the Creature from the Tomb, and formerly a lord of the estate - that lived beneath the castle, coming out at night to attack the villagers. The vampire caused an outbreak of plague, and the angry villagers dug it up from its shallow grave and burned its body.In the village of Alnwick, the public house known as Ye Olde Cross has its own ghosts: a collection of bottles that are cursed. Touch them and you die. The bottles are now apparently covered up to prevent further deaths.
"ENTER SIR LANCELOT:" Lancelot, the famous Knight of the Round Castle, lover of King Arthur's wife, Guinevere, and searcher for the Holy Grail, was sent to King Arthur's court by the Lady of the Lake. As a young man, Lancelot, then known as the White Knight, came across a castle called the Dolorous Guard, guarded by the Copper Knight, ten knights at the first wall, ten at the second wall, and then the Copper Knight himself. But that knight fled; Lancelot is taken to a cemetery and shown a metal slab with writing on it. Only one knight, says the writing, can lift this weighty slab, and his name is written on the other side of it. Lancelot flips over the slab and finds his name: Lancelot.Lancelot then took the Dolorous Guard as his home, changing it to Joyous Guard; on his death, he was buried there.Legend has it that Alnwick Castle is Joyous Guard, home and burial site of Lancelot.

So: Alnwick Castle is home to ghosts, and to Sir Lancelot.
"YOUNG PRINCE HOTSPUR:"
And it was home to the famous Harry Hotspur.

In 1403 Hotspur tried to depose Henry IV and was killed at the Battle of Shrewsbury when he raised his visor and an arrow penetrated his mouth.
His body was shown to King Henry IV, who wept. After his burial, rumors spread that he was still alive, so Henry IV had his body dug up, impaled on a spear, displayed in public, then cut into four pieces and sent around all of England; his head was then stuck on a pole at the gates of the city of York.In Shakespeare's "Henry IV Part I", Hotspur and his the Welsh rebel Glendower plot together against King Henry IV, and Hotspur mocks Glendower for his outrageous claims to control the devil and his spirits in the underworld.And this brings us to the question you are to ask the London obelisk.Glendower, in "Henry IV", says: I can call the spirits from the vasty deep.Hotspur replies: Why, so can I, or so can any man; But will they come when you do call for them?If you listen carefully, you just might - if your quest is pure and the water of the Thames runs clean that day or night - hear a soft voice, seeming to come from one of the two bronze sphinxes, or perhaps from the obelisk itself, repeating what Shakespeare recorded that Hotspur had said.
"CLEOPATRA'S NEEDLE GHOSTS:" But look around carefully when you ask the question and wait for an answer, for there are legends of ghosts at the obelisk. The London obelisk is called Cleopatra's Needle, even though she had nothing to do with it. The iron cylinder which carried the obelisk from Egypt to London, and was lost at sea for a while at the cost of the lives of six sailors, was named the Cleopatra by the engineer who moved it, John Dixon. Could it have been this association with Cleopatra's name that lead to the obelisk being called Cleopatra's Needle? Mythology is full of stories of the power of names: Ancient Egyptians associated the name with the soul. It was believed that knowledge of a god or spirit's name gave one complete power over that deity, and knowledge of a man's name provided the power to do that man good or ill. A person could not exist without his name. Perhaps this association with Cleopatra contributed to the legends about ghosts at the obelisk. Some say that a curse fell upon this obelisk when Cleopatra, then only thirty nine, committed suicide, clasping an asp to her chest after the death of her lover, Mark Antony. Her love affairs with both Caesar and Antony ended in tragedy, when both of them lost power.

When Otavian took Antony's will from the temple of the Vestal Virgins, where it had been stored for safekeeping, he found out that Antony had planned to move the capital from Rome to the magnificent city of Alexandria in Egypt, to be closer to Cleopatra, and to found a new dynasty there with her; Octavian published the will, and the Romans turned against Antony. Cleopatra persuaded Antony to commit suicide, which he did, falling upon his sword. When she tried to captivate Octavian, and failed, she realized that she would be paraded through the streets of Rome in chains, as part of Octavian's triumphal return to the capital city, so she chose death over such dishonor. She was found dead on a bed of gold, dressed in all her royal ornaments. Even today, there are more suicides near the obelisk than at any other point on the Thames River. There have been claims that strange, mocking laughter is heard nearby, and some have mentioned seeing a naked man rush up to the obelisk, leap upon its base, and then into the water, without any splash being heard.

In May of this year, the Office of Interfaith Relations, Presbyterian Church (USA), placed on their web site a paper, "Vigilance against Anti-Jewish Ideas and Bias." The paper was highly praised by many including the Jewish Community. Now the original paper has been edited in the extreme. The Presbyterian Office of Interfaith Relations is no longer confessing the sin of anti-Semitism for the Church. The statement has been removed.
The Jewish Council for Public Affairs has produced a paper combining the original paper with both the deleted and added material. However it is not on the web yet. In the mean time here is the original found at Jewish Christian Relations, and here is the new version found on the PCUSA web site, "Vigilance against Anti-Jewish Bias in the Pursuit of Israeli-Palestinian Peace."
This newly revised document is changed in many ways. An attitude of humility in the face of past wrongs has turned to arrogance. As stated above, this sentence, "However, we are aware and do confess that anti-Jewish attitudes can be found among us," has been removed. Instead the paper refers to Israel as "oppressors."1
Additionally, this redone paper softens its original accusation that liberation theology has contributed to anti-semitism. Instead using a distinction between anti-semitism and anti-Judaism the authors attempt to avoid attributing any complicity in anti-semitism to those who advocate entirely for Palestine. Yet those who advocate entirely for the Palestinians, while failing to uphold the rights of Israel, are those who use liberation theology. It is a complete circle.
It is as though a liberation theologian came upon the original paper, "Vigilance against Anti-Jewish Ideas and Bias," took out a pair of scissors and started hacking away at it.
After cutting out any confession of the sin of anti-semitism she added all of the material that has already appeared in so many other Presbyterian papers such as a call for "an end to the Israel occupation of Palestinian territories," and the need to "speak out against the placement of the separation barrier..."
Looking around for someone to blame for the prevailing anti-semitism in the Presbyterian Church she added "On the other hand, anti-Jewish' attitudes and actions are deeply rooted in the teaching of contempt for the Jews, which has its antecedents in a strong strand of Christian theology in which the Jews are replaced and superseded by Christians."
Perhaps this hacking liberationist does not realize that those who believe that Jesus Christ is the only way to the Father also believe that God does not revoke his promises to the Jews. But it is the liberationist who has forgotten the Jewish people and their story.
Liberation theology and this redone paper equate the Exodus story with the promise of land to all people. It isn't that liberation theology eliminates the Jewish people from that promise but rather such theology turns it into a material promise for all rather than a particular promise given historically to Israel. The author destroys Israel's particular history and misses the true meaning of the Exodus for Christians, which is a metaphor for their new life in Christ.
This isn't to say that other peoples should not have land nor that land isn't God's gift to them but the liberation theologian eliminates the particularity of the Jewish people.
But I digress. How utterly unthinkable, that Church Officials should place a paper on their web site urging others to avoid anti-semitism, collecting the praise of both Christians and Jews alike, and then, in reality, switching papers, only giving their latter edition which is anti-Semitic the same name as the first faithful, truthful and humbly written paper. How will the Jewish people ever trust the Presbyterian Church (USA) again?

The Apostle John is describing for us the coming global religious system, (the Woman), which works hand in hand with the coming global political/economic world system, (the Beast). It's very interesting that John notes that the woman is adorned with great riches and is dressed in scarlet and purple, (the colors of the Catholic Bishops and Cardinals), with the Catholic Church being one of the wealthiest enterprises on earth. It is our belief that the Roman Church will be the backbone of this future false religious system
Knowing the above, it is not at all surprising to see articles like these which report that the Catholic Church desires a much closer relationship with other major religions in an attempt to address the problems of the world, including the current economic morass. The Catholic Church desires to move the world towards the worship of the Eucharist Christ in this goal of solving the worlds problems. One can see how this seemingly noble goal of religions working together will easily be usurped for the purpose of causing the world to be deceived into accepting and worshiping the future Antichrist.

Spring is coming so they tell us, the copses of woods, the meadow verges, the hedge banks are all sprouting little green shoots - first come the snowdrops, the winter-flowering lily, sometimes called snow-piercer - most definitely that's what it will be called this year: Wales and the Midlands have just had another snowstorm.. and down here we might have one this weekend.
Famers tend to mark February as the half-way month - when the weather has always been unpredictable and can often be the coldest month. Mother Nature for now definitely does not want to come out while winter continues to do its worst. The leaf tips of the SNOW-PIERCER specially hardened and pointed to penetrate the frozen ground, while the flowers are protected by a sheath-like spathe as they emerge.
Lambs tails and PUSSY WILLOW will appear on the bare twigs of hazel trees and goat willow always heralding spring, creamy yellow male flowers producing clouds of dusty pollen, while the goat willow has wonderful silky silver male catkins, which turn yellow in March. The tactile feeling of goat willow is just wonderful and each year I've managed to find some to bring in for my mother. These sprays of sallow, heavy with male and female catkins, will traditionally decorate the Churches on Palm Sunday.
In country lanes the hedgerow plants are stirring, except this year I think they've returned to their beds for a while longer - sensible flowers! Mother Nature is holding onto her flowering goodies, holding them back, until the weather warms and we have a wonderful burst and mass of colour to gladden our hearts and lift our souls towards the lengthening sun.
We have had early ANEMONES from Cornwall - those fantastic jewels of colours. I have to say as a child I do not remember anemones in October, which since my mother has been ill, and when her birthday is, I've managed to find some for her. Where we 'bed and breakfasted' as kids there was a kitchen garden full of flowering anemones at Easter.. I used to love them.
At home we had a copse which was full of snowdrops, daffodils, narcissi, celandines with the bluebells later on; under the large sprawling oak tree the drift of snowdrops spread out, also followed by the daffodils; we must have had crocuses, but the ones I remember were in Hyde Park in my London days - I always sat upstairs on the double-decker bus so that I could see the amazing display of orange, cream, PURPLE AND WHITE CROCUSES as we travelled down Bayswater Road towards Marble Arch and the West End.
Then the hedgerows give us the violet and the primrose. The sweet violet, as one of the first wild flowers to bloom, is essential to insects on the wing providing winter sustenance. This the sweet violet has a heady fragrance eulogized as the flower of Aphrodite, goddess of love. An oil distilled from its petals has been used since the times of ancient Greece in perfume making and also in herbal medicines.
February that month of hope to have our spirits dashed with a bitter spell, or two or three - when the light is ever beckoning us to longer days - over an hour longer now - February renowned for flooding rivers, for winter winds and long icy gusts over the white empty miles of snowy fields - just going straight through you.
Where are the other signs of life - the birds scuttling around and joining the lone January robin: the blackbirds are there with their bright orange beak and wonderful showy song; the chaffinch energetically chirping all around us; shy birds such as dunnock and wren too sing on eagerly awaiting warmer days. Tiny birds the GOLDCRESTS singing their shining song from high in a lofty conifer, and the song thrush welcoming sun as it shines through.
The insects start to appear, needing to find the nectar to keep them nourished, the birds, beetles and tiny mammals likewise need to keep themselves fed - so when a cold snap comes, many animals and insects, already under pressure finally succumb.
The rigours of winter stretch their resilience to the limits and diminish their food supplies. Keeping warm takes much of their energy. For some small, warm-bloodied creatures even a single night below freezing is terminal. This year I suspect there will be many.
The RED DEER in Scotland are particularly hard hit this year as they need fresh grass and heather and the snows have been particularly tough and impenetrable for flora and fauna - and deer have one other disadvantage they naturally do not hold much fat, as they are born to roam the moors: this year they are worried that a whole generation may not survive.
However life adapts with wrens and long-tailed tits roosting snugly together in small crannies, postboxes!, upturned flowerpots, and sensibly into nesting boxes intended for their brood in the spring. Imagine seeing 50 or so little birds safely pop out of a postbox!
So that cold month of February is keeping us guessing - 2005 we had snow in February, 2006 and 2007 I don't think so; February 2008 was cold but we did not have snow, we had snow in February 2009, and now again in 2010.
Now 1649 I can tell you! - the hearse used for Charles I and his funeral on February 19th 1649 was covered in snow, the day having started out serene and clear, as we had here today.
