Every goddess or witch should have their very own personal book of shadows that they have created to pass down for future generations. For years now I have been keeping track of most of the rituals and meditations I write, the spells and cookery I have done, the healing herbs I have used and so it goes on. About 9 years ago I purchased a large black book with acid free paper inside. Each time I hold a ritual at the house I am inclined to add or write some sort of new aspect to it. I write my recipes for certain cooking dishes (with a little added magic), aromatherapy sprays and oils, natural remedies that have been passed down or ones I have found that work myself. The list goes on. You could even call it an eclectic book of variety.A book of shadows is simple to start. Purchase a large blank, hard bound book from any book store or support handmade and buy a handmade blank book. You'll want to start off by placing a small bit about yourself in the beginning of the book. Why are you creating this book and what are the purposes you plan to use it with or for. I highly recommend dedicating the book to someone like your daughter, niece or anyone you know that would benefit and enjoy the book once your earth life has passed.There is no special or certain way you should organize your book. It's yours after all! There is no particular organization required, use your instinct to write where you desire in your book. I do however suggest you divide the book into sections. This will give you certain areas to open in the book and a general idea of where your spell or ritual is placed.I have several 'chapters' in my book of shadows. The first chapter or section I created was for Natural Remedies. In this section you'll find recipes for homemade chest rubs when someone has a cold or cough, anointment oils and blends for raising consciousness, heightening my husbands sexual desires (not that they need heightened anymore) and curing common ailments. Anything from homemade herbal teas that ease ones stomach troubles to first aid salve and so on.Another chapter or section I have in my personal book of shadows is actual food recipes. These are not your everyday food recipes however. These ones have special properties and 'blessings' over the food to aid in certain situations. One of my favorites is a love concoction for a couple. It's a delicate, homemade true hot chocolate/cocoa drink. While adding each ingredient I say a blessing that pertains to what I am desiring that night for romance from my husband. When the spell and cooking are finished the persons both drink the hot chocolate that seems to raise their sexual behavior. There are several pasta and sauce dishes that use only olive oil, fruits or vegetables and specific herbs for certain meanings and values.One of my favorite sections of my book is that of the self written meditations. I open a lot of circles and rituals with an intense meditation to set the mood and open the inner spirit. Certain meditations apply to a specific time of year, others are simply to reflect negativity, manifest something wonderful and so the list goes on. My favorite meditations are those based around important lunar and celestial events.We can't forget about a chapter for rituals. I suggest placing or creating some sort of celestial/universal calender in your book. This will help you keep track of an upcoming date that is important to your spell/magic/light work. I've been doing Samhain rituals at my home for the past several years. Each year something new is added to the sacred sabot ritual. From circle casting, leaf tossing, salt throwing and laying to fire raising and everything in between, this is the section.I also have a section where I have written my own personal blessings for different times of the year. There is a blessing/chant/prayer for almost every earth based holiday. You can use one that has already been created and simply tweak it or create one entirely from your own point of view. I have hundreds of blessings I have written for nearly every aspect. Even down to picking a flower from a plant to placing the water in my coffee pot each morning.There is another section that helps me keep track of when and what stone I charged and how. This is handy when you need to do some quick magic work. You'll have a record of what stones were charged, how and by what element they were charged in and so on.I have many more sections and chapters that pertain to my lifestyle and reflect on the way I do my light work. Everyone is different and individual thus this is they way your book of shadows should be. Your book should be unique and special just like you.Some may feel inclined to adorn their book with charms, paintings, drawings and other stuff on the cover. Make it yours, use your imagination and get creative. I have even used the inside to draw out certain images that have come in dream form. Nothing wrong with a chapter just for notes and doodling or passing thoughts.Have fun with this project during the upcoming winter months. It will give you something to do on the cold winter days that will be here before we know it.Feel free to share a spell or page out of your book of shadows. If you are a Pagan and do not believe in the Christian / Jewish God then WitChcraft is perfect for you.
Witchcraft is mainly simple spells and rituals including Voodoo (Voodoo is not always that simple)... where as High Magic is much more complicated and not for the uneducated person and deals with very complex rituals that take years of study and practice to have success. Plus there are many types of High Magic all very similar but different and all extremely powerful if done correctly.
In High Magic you are also dealing with the Christian / Jewish God and his hierarchy. Hummm.... some of you don't believe in God?..... well then this is not for you. You don't have to believe in the Bible to believe in this Hierarchy..... the Bible was written by man and not God and it has been changed so many times that it is nowhere near the original version that was in Greek and Hebrew.
The same goes for Witchcraft.... you don't have to believe in the Wiccan way to practice it. And you don't need to even believe in their Gods and Goddesses. You only need to know HOW SPELLS WORK and have faith in your Magic along with being dedicated to it and not a Dabbler!
So which one should you choose.... well if you are like me.... you study everything and gain even more knowledge and power! But it is all your own preference and free will to choose what you will and make your own destiny!
P.S - Don't think that you can just pick up a spell book and expect to have success without practice and study. Learn to swim before you jump in the water!

The three of swords is the card that makes my heart sink more than any other when it comes up in a reading - and I use those words deliberately because the card does indeed show a pierced heart in a deluge of rain. Although it is only one of the minor arcana, I fear it more than any of the other supposedly scary cards - more than Death, the Devil or the Tower. It is the card of heartbreak - which is why I'm blogging about it on Friday 13 February, the day before Valentine's Day and a day associated with back luck.
The traditional image of the three of swords comes from the Rider Waitedeck - that's the card second from the right in the photo at the top. To me that depicts exactly the way it feels when love ends tragically - it can seem as though there is nothing left in the world but tears and pain.
It is a negative card - generally considered one of the most negative in the entire tarot deck - but if you bear with me I will show why there is always hope and something positive that can be found even in this card of despair. First I am going to discuss meanings give to the three of swords in a few different decks.
I'll start with the Rider-Waite, which defines the three of swords as: "Removal, absence, delay, division, rupture, dispersion, and all that the design signifies..." That's the grim, traditional definition for the three of swords - but to really understand the card and learn the lessons it teaches, or to help someone you have done a reading for who is feeling all that anguish, you need to look a little further.
The Lover's Path Tarot (far right in the picture at the top), replaces the suit of swords with the suit of arrows, and is more to the point in its initial definition: "Loss, sorrow, oversensitivity: A sharp pain to the heart - disappointment, end of a love relationship, separation."
Another deck that uses arrows instead of swords is the Wildwood Tarot (top left). The card in question in that deck shows three arrows piercing a heart-shaped target on a tree while drops of blood fall from it to the ground. The name on the card is "Jealousy". The book that comes with this set gives a different slant to the meaning of simple heartbreak, saying it is about: "A tension of emotions creating fear, jealousy and envy between people."
The Animal Wisdom Tarot uses feathers to represent the suit of swords and the three in that suit is the Grosbeak. The card (second from the left) shows three birds in a rainstorm. The theme starts with sorrow, heartbreak and pain, but moves on to recognition, resolution and healing. The card meaning says: "A secret is revealed and pierces our heart with betrayal, rejection, loss, grief, regret."
However, it goes on to show the way out of this situation: "Feel your emotions, express them fully, then let go." When you feel really upset, it is not only OK to cry, it is therapeutic. Most of us will at some time or other experience heartbreak in our lives, whether that is because of a lover's betrayal, the break-up of a relationship, a forced parting or ending, or even a death. No one wants to feel the pain of that loss, but sometimes it is unavoidable.
At first, you really do need to let your feelings out - probably by crying. But the suit of swords (or arrows or feathers) is mainly about thoughts rather than emotions (the suit of cups is more focused on feelings). Those swords - or arrows - are your own thoughts that are stabbing at you with regrets and recriminations - and you need to look at them carefully.
The Animal Wisdom Tarot says: "Look to the heart of the matter to identify painful patterns in your life. Move beyond pretence." The Wildwood Tarot offers the advice of learning to accept and forgive, even if life isn't always fair. The Lover's Path Tarot also shows the way to move on from the sorrow: "The need to transform grief into understanding." It explains that sorrow can be part of the path to enlightenment.
The final card I photographed (right) is from The Guardian Angel Tarot, which neatly renames the suit "Thought". The Guardian Angel Tarot is specifically intended to give gentle answers. It interprets the traditional cards in the least scary way possible, without actually losing their meaning. The three of thought doesn't show any pierced hearts or storms of tears - instead it shows an angel.
The definition states: "Loving angels surround you to heal and comfort you. The sadness you feel will fade with time." That last part is true for all readings in which the three of swords, arrows, feathers or thought comes up. Time really is a great healer.
The first part - the bit about angels - might be easy to scoff at if you don't believe in angels. But I don't think you need to have faith in literal angels to get comfort from that card. Most of us will have someone we can turn to in times of need - friends or family members who we can get in contact with and who will be a shoulder to cry on.
Even if we feel we are all alone in the world, without a single friend, there are still helplines that can be called. For example, the charity Relate has counsellors available to chat to by phone or email about relationship issues. The Samaritans also offers confidential emotional support for those who are experiencing despair.
If you are suffering the heartbreak shown on the three of swords remember, you are not alone unless you choose to be, it is OK to cry, these feelings will pass, learn from this situation and move on. Another day - perhaps as soon as tomorrow - you will find happiness again.
